good evening, i'm maria medina in for veronica de la cruz. >> i'm ken bastida. this evening a breakthrough on what may be causing serious lung injuries. kpix 5's andria borba is joining us now with what scientists just learned. >> reporter: well, ken and maria, the cdc announced this morning that they have been finding pieces of vape juice embedded inside the lungs. after a rash of vaping related illnesses around the country, the cdc may have a breakthrough. 29 samples turned up vitamin e acetate used as a thickener in vape juice, especially on the black market. >> they're typically absorbed by ingesting them in food or potentially in over the counter vitamins. sometimes it's used topically to rub on the skin, nothing that says anything about inhaling it. they could be safe to swallow and not pose any risk to health. that doesn't mean they're safe to inhale into your lungs. >> reporter: so far the cdc has tracked over 2,000 illnesses and 39 deaths.

. >> and i'm ken bastida. let's get right to kpix 5's andrea nakano who's live in orinda with what federal agents just uncovered. >> reporter: yeah, there have been many twists and turns in this investigation into the orinda shooting. just last week 5 arrests were made and then on monday 4 of the suspects were released. well today the atf worked with the contra co sherf's department and made additional arrests. they also seized some guns and made an alarming discovery. here are some of the pictures a from san francisco. it shows swat teams and vehicles during the operation. even negotiators were onhand. the enforcement team seized multiple weapons, and according to a national ballistics database, some of the guns were linked to other shootings in the bay area. now the atf's raid was in support of the contra costa county sheriff's department investigation into the orinda shooting at an airbnb that killed 5 people during a halloween party. now the atf also announced today that they are offering a $20,000 reward
