a lodge that was built in lincoln hills was the crown jewel of lincoln hills. bedrooms, the resort also had 17 cabins that were rented out between memorial day and labor day. you are probably asking the question, why only between memorial day and labor day? you saw the snowstorm yesterday. the roads were dirt roads going up to the mountain. up in that area during the wintertime, there could be three to four feet of snow. weeks lodge and winks tavern were only operated during the summer months. during the summer months, there were as many as 5000 visitors, and guess would come to the resort. wink's hills, along with panorama and the tavern were a monument and a testament to the ingenuity and the entrepreneurial spirit of black americans. nks" hamlan, the proprietor and builder of the lodge, was a valued citizen in the county. during his tenure from 1926 to 1965 -- that is when he passed away -- he not only operated the hotel, he was the deputy sheriff, he was a forest ranger, and those were some of the responsibilities -- he was also assistant postmaster in gelf

what about lincoln? july 11 and july 12, 1864, even after-hours, when the battle initially began, when he up thehey have arrived river, he rides down to greet them. there are accounts of the president greeting them, wishing them well, telling the mythic run into confederate -- if they run into confederate soldiers, he famously tells the soldiers you can't be late if you want to get early. one of my favorite lines. here is fort stevens in 1865. if you look in that road right where he will be coming down on the morning of july 12 in the afternoon of july 11, into july 12. we are basically out of time here. when he gets 110 yards from fort stevens, internally within the city, and forced him back a thousand yards from fort stevens, that is the watermark. by the evening time, the six quarters on the field take position behind the northern defenses and the 19th core elements arrive as well. the battle is shifted and the divide in the city is over. here is a really great image of fort stevens in 1865. you can s

so lincoln was a political actor but there was a core to everything that he did. he was not formally educated but then he found his way pretty quickly and became a big fan of tom paine and shakespeare and of course the bible that came in handy politically when he tried to combat the argument of the christian churches with slavery. to say that was sanctified by god in the bible. so he could hold his own on the religious front for basically the arguments of political philosophy of a crime of slavery against humanity. so the first book is all about his childhood growing up how he first got into politics and stephen douglas would be his rifle throughout his career he made a deal to run for congress just for one term so he spent that term in office fighting the mexican american war and challenging president polk about the justification for that war and he earned the nickname spotty because he want to know the spot allegedly where the americans attacked because he was very antiwar to call them basically with the enemies of the country that was a constant trope for the m

with lincoln, it was arduous, he did not enjoy it much. he had to do it. he was so busy, but they had to state dinners. and the season, which ran from december to spring, where everything was centered around the white house, parties were held, there were receptions. there was a 4th of july reception, there was a new year's day reception, and until the 18 fifties, there was the 8th of january, and rejections victory at new orleans. those republic receptions, open to the public, and the public came, and by then, 6000 was typical attendance. the president's hand would be brews. the first lady usually retreated behind the table or held a big bouquet to avoid it. this was stopped in the late twenties. it got totally out of hand. and many people who came couldn't get in because the doors will be close and there would be a line out on pennsylvania avenue. so, those receptions, the last was new years, 4th of july was too hot in washington and people started going to the shores, and the last one lasted until 9:29, and was held once more, in 1932. and then no more.

and johnson and lincoln were essentially in the same party, that is to say they were both unionists, supporters of the union. and the party in 1864 was called the union party. but if you look at the votes coming in, the union party is overwhelmingly made of republicans, that's a simple fact. it is more a name change than a reality, and the democratic vote that your is not that far low what democrats in the north usually got. so in that sense, there hasn't been much like this ever since, but in some ways johnson and lincoln were of the same party, because both were determined that the union should be saved at all costs. and andrew johnson, slaveholder that he was, had come to support the emancipation proclamation and would twist arms in tennessee, his native state, to get that state to ratify the end of slavery, as infected did. so johnson didn't look like that absurd choice, not back then. anything else? i guess we are set. great. ..." well, breckinridge loses the president's initial election and lincoln -- presidential election and lincoln takes office. kentucky appoints breckinridge as their senator, and the day he steps down from being a vice president, he takes his oath to be senator for kentucky. in the senate, he is not on fire for secession. he is more interested in keeping kentucky neutral. however, things start spiraling out of his control. by late summer, 1861, his son has run off and join the confederate army, and through a series of events, breckinridge runs to the confederacy and will fight with the confederacy as a naval officer during the remainder of the war. prior to new market, he fought it shiloh, baton rouge, jackson, and others. the opening messages that start cloth the campaign are very interesting. here is the one robert e lee sends to breckinridge on may 1, 1864. "general, i gather from the reports of scouts recently from the valley that -- has set out on an expedition, the design of which is to reach some point on the virginia-tennessee railroads or affect the capture of stanton. the general impr

the lincoln administration looks like they're going to give it to her but lincoln is assassinated in april of 1865 and she has to deal with andrew johnson, who is very lukewarm on the idea, especially because clara barton is a woman running the office. so ultimately he does give approval for her to continue the work, but punts the request for $15,000 to congress. congress in 1865, like congress in 2019, they don't do anything with it. slow. ultimately, barton does get the money, the $15,000. but this effort, she fronts the money from what she gets from friends and family members and from those who want her to do this work. she also traveled the country on a speaking tour. she goes across the country and gives a lecture about what it was like to be a woman going to the battlefield. so she is able to, through speaking fees and donations, kabul enough money together to keep the operation going until 1866, when she gets a federal appropriation to give her the money to essentially pay her back for what she has fronted to get the office going. it does begin in 1865. by 1867, most of the wo

in the wake of lincoln's assassination, these fears were only heightened. lots and lots of examples of soldiers fear, because you have extended these terms, now look what has not changed the union's high command, though. instead of ending paroling, they ramp up paroling, across the shenandoah valley, counties across richmond, the u.s. calvary is sent out, looking for stragglers, looking for men who had not been paroled. back in the valley, in winchester, hancock recognized that hundreds, if not thousands, of lee's men had taken to the hills and the hamlets of shenandoah valley without paroles. his announcement on april 10, offering the same terms as those given on appomattox, had already convinced at least 35 meant by april 14 to come turn themselves in at winchester. they were go into the town of winchester where they went seek out the marshall and sign their individual parole. but the possibility of assassins heightened the sense of urgency. hancock is riding back and forth, and hallock say do not let anyone into your lines, and he said wait, we have to p
