thanks so much to shawn donnan, reporting in washington. let's get some market perspective on the president's remarks. joining us is the chief marketing strategist at riverfront investment group, kevin nicholson. it looks like with the markets at all-time high territory, at the very least, investors did not see anything to get in the way of what has been a drift higher. kevin: that's correct. theyone has stated president didn't really add anything to the conversation today. markets have priced a lot of the trade already in. we have seen it break through what was 3000 overhead resistance. now you are up at 3100 territory. you may get the santa claus rally here, but it will be a tough go the rest of the way. because we have rallied so much this year. shery: listen to what president said again on the federal reserve. competingp: we are against these other countries nonetheless, and the federal reserve does not let us play at that game. at a competitive disadvantage to other countries. shery: first of all, what do you make of his remarks? also,

shawn: this been we get from both sides is both sides do a deal. we should keep in mind this phase one deal is a narrow deal. this will not change the economic relationship between the u.s. and china. in some ways it will repair some of the damage like the farm exports, the collapse of farm exports we have seen as a result of these trade wars. the real question is where these andtiations go afterwards how they tackle bigger issues, bigger structural issues in the relationship and whether they can. on that front, the trump administration is very positive about there being a phase two or phase three, possibly, and on the chinese side we keep hearing over and over they are quite skeptical they will have any success. inid: it means we will be 2020, which happens to be an election year, which may complicate it further. thanks to shawn donnan in washington. now we go to kevin cirilli on capitol hill in washington. day two of the public impeachment hearings. what did we learn today? kevin: the former ambassador outlining for the first time publicly her pe

shawn: that's entirely possible. at the same time, this is kind of mixed data. we are seeing weak manufacturing data today, the ism down at 48.3, slightly lower than expected. that is and has been the main sector people have been focusing on in terms of trade war impact, in particular, how that sector is looking in swing states going into the election next year. so yes, he's got some encouraging jobs numbers. the president clearly excited about that. but when he looks around the swing states, there is a slightly more nuanced picture, and his advisors, including larry kudlow, are aware of that. vonnie: one of the things larry said in response to a question is that the effect on china is much greater than the effect on the u.s. he even said maybe four times greater than the effect on the u.s. whether or not that is true, it would obviously influence the president. would it influence the negotiators? shawn: i think for the negotiators, the question is what will their political masters bear in terms of economic pain and political costs. that's where these economic n

shawn: potentially. we seen signs that when the markets are dipping, the president seems to pull the foot off the accelerator a bit, but broadly remove or the direction of travel here in terms of the president and trade policy has been towards this smaller phase i deal, to try to get something in the books. that is not just about the markets. that's also about the broader economy and how it's been slowing. he wants to get some positive signals out there, but we should certainly expect him to hail the records that we seen in equity markets in recent days. he certainly does that on twitter. guy: he was doing it early on today, and is probably taking something of a victory lap later new york. thank you as ever, bloomberg's shawn donnan. we are joined by alberto gallo, algebris partner and portfolio manager. are you expecting a trade deal anytime soon? alberto: we are not expect in a finalized deal with china. we are expecting discussion and potentially a reduction of tariffs for the last batch. guy: that is
