political correspondent simon young has been taking a look at preparations for saturday's festivities at the brandenburg gate is the centerpiece of these celebrations marking 30 years since the fall. all of the berlin wall the brandenburg gate that stood back then in 1989 in the death zone between east and west where nobody could cross and this is of course a commemoration of history and the sadness is that go with that but also of hope for the future above or maybe you can see these colorful cloud of freedom as it's called 30000 strips of paper with people's hopes for the future written on them and they've suspended them here in this colorful art installation one of the many creative ideas that to berlin is have come up with to celebrate this anniversary and tonight despite the rain there is still plenty of tourists in berlin as you've come down here to the brandenburg gate to have a look at what's going on to share their stories with each other and to sort of enjoy this atmosphere of street party event we're seeing you can see the brandenburg gate behind me and in front of it the st

joining me now in studio is the political correspondent simon young i mean as we saw i mean those events very much still live here in berlin how is that momentous occasion and 30 years ago resonating today well i think as people look back it's evident that germany of the you really united germany today is a democratic country with free elections people can move around everybody enjoys the rights and freedoms guaranteed to germany's basic laws such as the right to human dignity but that's not to downplay the differences between rich and poor. but from the east and. viewpoint there is a sense that you know the full of the bird in will was not unalloyed good news and france is a new survey just out says that almost half of eastern germans feel they are less free now to express themselves that summary now than before the fall the war most awfully that than they were under communism and there are there is also a sort of related sense that you know many east germans are 2nd class citizens as they feel wages are lower pensions and lower in the east so you know there are problems but almost nobo
