disney, walmart, nike. aside from the fact that they're all up more than 20% on a one-year basis, well outperforming the s&p 500, they all also have premium valuations they trade between let's say 24 and 28 times forward earnings. that's at least a 40 or 50% premium to the market. the market is saying these companies have figured out the digital future in their respective businesses, i believe. so they're essentially saying they have the scale to make the investments. they fended offer a lot of the upstarts whether it's correct or not, it's also kind of hiding in some of the megacap names they feel a little bit defensive and people are willing to pay up for the quality of the global franchise as well as the current strategy, guys >> you know, mike, the question with that, the market has decided they do this and they know how -- they know and have figured this out but how fickle is the market when it comes to things like this >> that's exactly right. the market's preference could turn to we want to go back t

what are you expect to hear from walmart? there's a lot of buzz doubt the grocery business which is kind of going up against amazon, especially for deliveries. >> the way these two companies are fighting each other out, it's like coke and pepsi back 20, 30 years ago. amazon is pushing hard in the grocery space. walmart has home delivery where they can put the groceries in your fridge. interested to hear how many people took them up on this. looking for e-commerce, he what's the growth year over year. last quarter they were up 37% year over year. for a company that's known for bricks and mortars to be able to compete in the online marketplace is nothing short of remarkable of. i expect good results based on the u.s. consumer. cheryl: 48% of millennials and gen-zers are the ones that use online delivery. holiday season, there's concerns they're going to come out and give us a negative forecast for next year because of the tariffs, toys, electronics, those kick in december 15th, that's could be the story that walmart has to deal

the former president and ceo of walmart u.s. bill, watching what's happened to walmart over the years, this is a company that continues to reinvent itself against pretty strict odds. what do you think that you've seen >> they've done a great job. doug is a great interview. they've done a masterful job, laying out a strategy, telling a story and executing against it it's hard to argue they declared where they were going to go five years ago and they've gone there the question is really where do you go from there. they have built as you mentioned in the interview a terrific ecommerce business from next to nothing. that has come at a steep cost. their operating income was 28 billion, it's now 21 billion that's down 23%. their sales have grown 6%, a little over 1% a year. it's time to see traction from that but they have done a really good job laying it out and really changing the direction and the impression that the company's been able to deliver across the country. >> bill, in responding to becky's question about the impact of th

walmart numbers are pham noll. comp store sales 3.2%, three thousand grocery pickup stores, 1400 same day delivery. you know this is a company as large as it is important as it is people were writing off less than two years ago? >> 21 straight quarters of growth, that's what walmart as seen. you touched on a point also very important, online growth. walmart spent a lot of cap-ex trying to make sure that their online growth, the ability to buy things online, eggs especially grocery is top-notch. they want to go up against the amazons of the world and target. 41% of people buy groceries online at walmart that carried earnings. they also increased outlook for 2020. we are, i mean certainly positioning themselves in good place. charles: it is pretty easy to say walmart is proxy for the american consumer. >> yeah. charles: so you couple all of the things that she outlined, there is piece in the journal, auto loan originations second highest in history. travel over thanksgiving. we'll set another record. housing permits

this is after a big earnings report card, where not only did walmart beat on sales and profit, but walmart guiding for a better year than anticipated which is what they usually do in their third quarter. so the outlook for the all-important holiday shopping period looks to be better than expected, with black friday just two weeks away, believe it or not. walmart already unveiling their big deals and they're offering big discounts the day before thanksgiving. mark that on your calendar. this year you can get $80 off ipads, $50 off oculus virtual headsets and there were some concerns, though, heading into the holidays that maybe a u.s./china trade war would mean higher prices and that means denting consumer spending. not the case, though, with consumer spending strong heading into the end of this year. that will likely extend walmart's incredible 21-quarter winning streak. that's close to five years of growing sales. almost unmatched when it comes to retailing. walmart also pushing hard into online growth, up 41% when it comes to e-commerce. that means competing with amazon when it comes to

what is walmart doing right? there's a lot of people five, eight years ago who thought walmart is sucking some wind here and the same question for target what's target doing right? >> walmart improved in grocery and online they are one of the retailers that are driving positive traffic. >> how about target? >> for target, a similarly significant change is to their sort that's allowed them to go after the apparel business in a big way. there's over a billion dollars of apparel sells they have gone after the toy business for the closure of toys r us and have done a great job with their buy online and pick up strategy. >> what do you think about the tariffs, the december 15th tariffs if they go into effect the holiday season won't be impacted because much of the merchandise has been brought in or sitting in some warehouse but going forward i would mimagine the goods they bring in will be hit by tariffs how do you think about that? >> that's a great question i was just in asia pa sick last month visiting with manufac
