karl rove former white house chief deputy staff of george w. bush and fox news contributor. good morning to you. let's go through it here a little bit. i think your historical perspective holds great value. you have 2019, you've got 1998, you've got 1974, and in 1974 you are working for the rnc in washington, d.c. you were 23 years old. how would you compare and contrast the difference between the three or are you able to do that yet, karl? >> yeah, i think so. look, i went to work for the chairman of the republican national committee george herbert walker bush in october of 1973. i was 22. my job was special assistant in part was to help coordinate with the impeachment defense, the groups defending president nixon against impeachment charges. i was there as a youngster. you could sense over the course of 1973 and into 1974, you could just sense that the public was slipping away. became harder and harder for people to rouse themselves to defend president nixon. it was bipartisan. the moment -- the end came when a group of senators led by barry goldwater and including a senat

rove, he served as senior adviser to president george w. bush. karl, welcome, and the polling numbers seem fixed even though not moving, even though impeachment now seems inevitable, how do you read the public opinion on this? >> well, you put it right, it's closely divided and unchanging before shenanigans began, if you wanted the president impeached, you till want him impeached. if you don't want him to impeach, you are stuck in place. small group of people who are capable of switching opinions with regard to the president, whether or not they end up in his camp or the democratic presidential candidates' camp in november depends less on what happens in front of the judiciary committee and what happens in the senate trial. i think it depends more on whom the democrats nominate for president and whether or not donald trump can disqualify them or whether that individual can somehow say i can unit the country. paul: you know, i talked to a house democrat, ranking house democrat, committee chair who said, you know, we will vote to impeach him
