we have robert costa. he is a national political reporter for "the washington post" and a moderator. let me start with you. i am holding the document in my hand here. it is reminiscent of what we saw back in 1974. the title is the same. how much of an analog is there between these two documents, as you see the structure that you've had the democrats building here for impeachment? >> well, they're different in a political context in that in 1974 richard nixon had the support of about 24, 25% of the country. and you had many republicans breaking with president nixon supporting articles of impeachment. so that context is completely different. also in terms of this case, it's different in that the charges are potentially a morphice. they cover more grounds in terms of what obstruction of justice means. you don't quite had which you had with nixon which are those 18 missing minutes of tape, that people could get their mind around in terms of the way obstruction worked. i think it's very important for democrats

he's still winning over working class support. >> robert contra costa on the grounds of the u.s. capitol, thank you very much for being part of our coverage tonight. steve kornacki, take us to iowa. >> look at this contrast. this is the national polling average right now for the democratic race. biden in front. when you look at iowa, completely different story. buttigieg actually leads right now, slightly in the average of polls. sanders is right on his heels, only two points behind. biden very close, but technically that is third place for biden. elizabeth warren behind him by a few points. four candidates within six points of each other in iowa. there are two things we've seen traditionally in iowa. we've seen a number of races where very, very late the race will change dramatically in iowa, famously john kerry won the nomination in 2004, surged to win iowa. if you can win iowa, eight days later is new hampshire. if you can win iowa and new hampshire, so far in the modern history of democratic presidential nominating contest, those candidates are undefeated. >> senator, we'll r

robert costa, and moderator former democratic senator from my home staid of thursday, he was serving when bill clinton was impeached in 1998. and david jolly, no longer affiliated with the party. if speaker pelosi holds on to these articles, could she hold it as leverage to get a fair trial. >> i don't think she does, i hate to second guess her, but i think she runs the risk here of changing both the momentum and the perceptions of these proceedings. i served in both institutions so i'm defensive of both, but how the senate conducts their trial social security the prerogative of the senate, and not the house of representatives. the minute the impeachment trial was to set is really more the beginning of the 2020 general election that there was ever going to be a trial. that was the risk of doing this and here we are. >> why do they care if it is held up, congressman? we heard from republican senators for the last few weeks that the senate trial is point less. >> what they said it s that the senate trial is rigged, and it is the senate's prerogative on how to conduct the trial. i think

,esterday you had robert costa the reporter from "the washington post." both made a statement when talking about the ukraine memo and used the phrase "do me a favor." that phrase does not appear in the memo or the transcript, but remember when schiff did his parity of that phone call, he said i have a favor i want from you. everyone has been taking that and now they use that phrase "do me a favor" but that does not appear in the transcript. what trump said is "do us a favor." that is an important distinction in terms of legality and any possible impeachment. host: we had that posted on our website. it may still be there, c-span.org/impeachment. i will see if i can bring it up and get to what you are talking about, that point, the actual phrasing of what the president said, but go ahead. caller: i want to bring that up because i think people, as they watch the hearings today or any of the other proceedings in the future, they should have their ears tuned to listen to people saying "do me a favor" as opposed to "do us a favor." immediately after he said tha
