the smoke could be seen for miles from san bruno mountain state and county park in northern san mateo county. abc 7 news reporter kaitlte lar was on the ground. >> reporter: the embers may not look like much but the fire on top of the hill sure did. sky 7 was overhead a wall of 25-foot flames that shoot threw at least six acres. >> that stuff that burns up there really goes up. i mean, it goes up like a cannon. >> reporter: fire officials never ordered evacuates but daly city resident was worried his house was going to catch fire next. >> all those eucalyptus up there, i thought if they catch fire that's going to come over the hill. >> reporter: almost 100 firefighters and inmate crews along with a dozen engines and a helicopter responded to the fire that broke out just after10:00 this morning in the state and county park. >> this really behind me is a testament to where we're at with our moistures and the lack of rain we've seen over the last two months. >> reporter: cal fire deputy chief john than cox emphasized how unusual and concerning it was to see a fire this early in the year.

a problem out of san francisco and down to san mateo southbound 101, you jammed up. the first bit of slowing, it focused right here at third southbound 101, a majority of lanes blocked by an overnight crash and jammed up toward aza and jammed at popular and then lanes closed toward highway 92. as we mentioned, it was a good samaritan. bob, someone died as a result of the crash. they weren't even in the car. why was someone standing on the freeway out there? >> reporter: they were trying to help the person who was in the initial accident and that is -- a good samaritan. and he was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver. we'll have more on that. his shoes are out here in the nidal of southbound 101 and if you pan up and tilt up, you could see that blue scion van, that was the initial vehicle. that driver has been taken to the hospital with major injuries. that driver bounced off the side wall and ended up here in the southbound direction of 101. a couple of other cars hit him. the good samaritan pulled up in his bmw and saw what was happening and trying to help the div
