we begin our team coverage with nbc bay area's roz plater. what do we know about this latest case in santa clara county? >> reporter: good evening, terry. first the good news. we're told that this patient is not ill and is not hospitalized. that's the good news. we're told she had household contact with the third woman that we learned that tested positive. we learned about her just yesterday, a woman who had been hospitalized here at el camino hospital. here is what's significant about that third case we learned about yesterday. this is a woman, we're told, who is older with underlying health conditions but she had not traveled to any of the countries known to be a hot spot for the virus, nor had she had any contact with anyone known to have the infection. so her source is unknown. health department officials say they had been preparing for this kind of community spread of the virus. they will now step up their efforts to have community surveillance so they can figure out the extent of people who might indeed have had contact with it. lastly,

some schools in the bay area are closing. nbc bay area's jean elle is live in san francisco with more on how widespread those closures may become. jean? >> reporter: jessica, district officials here in san francisco closed lowell high school today when it learned a student's mother was being treated for coronavirus. it's a scenario school districts all over the bay area are hoping to avoid but are planning for. >> we know this was a conservative decision, but we did this out of the abundance of caution for the safety and welfare of our students. >> reporter: san francisco's superintendent of schools announces the district is closing lowell high school at least for a few days after learning a parent of a lowell student is being treated for coronavirus. the student is not showing symptoms. the campus closure is not recommended by the department of public health. but parents we talked to think it's a good way to protect the school community. >> are you concerned? >> yes, because not only for my son but everyone else. >> reporter

in the bay area, the number of cases continues to grow. health officials in san mateo county announced they have 16 new cases. that brings the total number of cases there to 80 with one reported death. we've also just learned that a sixth person has died in santa clara county. santa clara county has the highest number of cases at 155. as of last night, according to the california department of public health, the total number of confirmed cases in the state, 598. 13 people have died. but today's santa clara county did announce another death bringing the death toll to at least 14. >> state officials are warning the coronavirus here in california could get better before it gets worse. the governor signed a bill to spend as much as a billion dollars to help hospitals handle an expected rush of patients. he says california could need as many as 20,000 hospital beds. the governor would not comment on the shortage of supplies saying he didn't want to cause further concern. national guard troops across the country are now on notice in case they're
