colfax from the san francisco examer. since the first cases were diagnosed has anyone recovered from covid-19 and if so how many people? >> people recover from covid-19, and i think we know from the data on both nationally and internationally that the majority of people and many have mild symptoms and recover well. it is really the focus on the vulnerable populations, the people who have to be hospitalized, the people in the i c .u. i think the focus needs to be on the hospital system and the capacity there and the people who have not recovered are are e people who died. with our collective efforts of prevention and experts. i want to emphasize the expertise we have in the health department at zuckerberg, san francisco general, u.c.s.f. and kaiser we have incredible leadership ensuring that as many people recover as possible. >> is the department doing contact investigations for every positive case and notifying those who may have been in contact with the positive case? >> so we are continuing to expand our contact invest

so it's not tolerated here in san francisco. in fact, as we look at the data and the inequities as it relates to covid-19, we are seeing the disparities, true disparities around income and inequality and other things that have sadly been a part of our environment and our climate for so many years, that when there is a pandemic, those issues are heightened and made work and exacerbated as a result of this pandemic. specifically people who might not have access to good health care or conditions or outcomes are those most impacted. we see that people who live in crowded settings and congregate situations since day one, those are the most challenging as they are the most impacted by the virus. the data is what is helping to shape our understanding of this virus, as it relates to san francisco. but it is also playing itself out throughout the country. i'm really proud of this city because not only do we have an office of racial equity, from the very beginning when we operated this emergency operations center right here, from day one

i want to just say that we hear about san francisco and how great san francisco is doing all over the world and we're being used as an example of how to manage this situation right. but i want to just remind you, we have 1,340 people who have tested positive with the virus. it is estimated that about 12% of the people we've tested overall have the virus, which means that there's a possibility clearly that there are others who are asymptomatic in our community that have the virus and have the ability to infect other people. what we don't want to see on nice days, on days like this, out in the communities and infecting other people. they don't have a mask and not social distancing and going back to the habits that are familiar and engaging with one another and not socially distancing and getting comfortable and complacent. and then a week from now we wonder why our numbers from shot up from 1,340 to 2,000 or more with even more deaths. this is what is at stake. as good as it might seem, the situation we're in now, the numbers are still going up. the number in i.c.u. have gone up. the nu

now 21 people in san francisco have died from coronavirus. this is a loss to our community and i send my condolences to their loved ones. we know that 20 of the people who have died were over 60 years old and all 21 had underlying health conditions. this is consistent with what we know about who is most at risk. our hospitalization numbers for covid-positive patients have been holding relatively steady for the past two weeks. if you look at the graph on the data tracker, you can see that the curve is flat. san francisco, you made that happen. it is an incredible achievement and i thank you. and we must continue to flatten the curve. i remain very concerned about outbreaks that are occurring in the homeless population, long-term care facilities and other congregate living settings. as we have known and as i have said from the beginning, that this is where the virus presents the greatest threat. if people affected by these outbreaks get very sick, it could still overwhelm our healthcare system. that is why we have prioritized vulnerable populat

san francisco was still almost like a boom town. you know this was only 50 years after the gold rush and only 50 years after state hood. so you still had people walking the streets of san francisco who were literal goldminers. and it was that whole mindset of the city was -- i describe it in the book as a place that believed in fate rather than skill. when you think about what a goldminer's mindset is, you don't mine for gold because you think you are better at mining for gold than everybody else. you're doing it because you think you are going to be lucky. i'm going to find the right spot. i'm going to get the biggest nugget and become a wealthy person all of a sudden. if that's your mindset that you are counting on being lucky, you don't want anybody to get in the way of you becoming lucky. there was no idea that you could have public health or public goods or this idea that you had a civil society. one thing i was struck by in the book was as san francisco grew, its spending on public health declined. you had a big city with the

of san francisco. it's a call to action. we've got to standup to hate and intimidation. we've got to energyize the next generation, test the field for mass mobilization, and there are census jobs available that pay $30 an hour if we can get our people in the pipeline as quickly as possible. so now, i'm going to give you just an overview of the san francisco effort. it's s.f. counts for the 2020 census. and we say that every counts and needs to be counted. despite what you hear from wilbur ross or the president or other people, yeah, our people count, and our focus is going to be on hard-to-reach areas of the city. so what is s.f. count? so this is a coordinated grassroots effort with a broad network of community arts, civic, education, labor, and faith-based organizations, to make sure that everyone in san francisco is accurately counted in the census. our goals are real simple. increase the access, remove the barriers, foster trust because they've got to at least trust us, and then motivate our reside
