so what she meant to nasa was that we won the space race. and katherine johnson played a significant role in that. you know, katherine is from a small town a few hours from west virginia state university. it's called white sulfur springs. and we had the privilege to have er little beautiful face on our campus at the age of 10. because she was unable to go to high school in her hometown because of the hue of her skin. so she and her family had to travel two hours to come to west virginia state university. we had an elementary and a high school that was a part of the university at the time. a young katherine johnson with all of her mathematical skims and intelligence came here, and she graduated at the age of 15. and westbury is state college -- what was then west virginia state college. she left us at the age of 18. she never looked back. in 1937 when she graduated, she went into the field of teaching. she was inspired here and understood the very significance of teaching and paying it forward. and so she went into teaching for about 13 years

we predate nasa by a little under 18 years. naca, which extends for the national advisory committee for aeronautics, was founded in 1915, in the infancy of aviation in this country to study this new technology and figure out how we can harness it for economic, military use. but prior to this center, they had really only focused on general aeronautics. they had not really done anything with aircraft engines. they had been seeing what they were doing in europe and found that they were way ahead of us when it came to aircraft engine research, especially the germans. in the late 1930's, that made them a little nervous. congress approved the establishment of a third laboratory that would focus on aircraft engines. you could do all the research you want, but you will never make a plane fly higher or faster if you don't have good engines. , to was our single role improve aircraft engines. 75 years later, we're still working on aircraft engine research and improving that technology. we've had five names over the course of our history.

my experience at nasa was pretty phenomenal. i remember the first time i realized that people didn't appreciate the education i had from uva. it was when a technician -- i was going to get some stuff made by this one technician, and he said to me, where did you go to school? i said university of virginia. he said, no, you went to virginia state, right? i said no. he said, you went to the black school in petersburg virginia state, as though i could not go to that school. i'm like, what's up with this guy? that's why i sensed this former racism a little bit, someone not expecting you to have achieved certain things. i befriended katherine johnson when i was there, from hidden figures. katherine was always positive, and no matter what the situation, she would talk about how there is always a solution, you just have to work hard, you will figure it out. it was just this work ethic she had. she retired when i got there. she retired in 86. that was a turning point for me, because i joined this group of african-american scientists and

once you compare those costs to the cost of nasa's previous efforts or nasa's current effort with the rocket and ca psules current effort with the rocket and capsules you'll see the costs are significantly less. even the rocket science is very expensive because are coming out. you might‘ve seen earlier in the footage that space seconds managed to land one of its boosters onto its platform to reuse it. so that is one of the reason why space x is able delete not able to offer launches not only do they build it differently, they build it to be reusable. the idea is that reusable rocketry you don't throw away the hardware after the mission. just like aircraft you refurbish and you reuse it. that will bring down costs significantly. who knew that there was even sustainability in science. what happens though to nasa using the vehicles which have been getting to the international space station all these years? they have, it's a partnership but for the last few years since they shuttle retired nasa has been buying seats. they will still see and launch in the coming years because of the, all
