morgan chesky in dallas, texas. >> i appreciate that. >>> let's go from texas to florida. number of coronavirus deaths in florida. that number has hid a new single day record, 132 statewide. now south florida mayors are sounding the alarm over the escalating crisis directly with governor desantis. nbc's kerry sanders is in ft. lauderdale for us. he's outside broward health medical center. kerry, walk us through what's happening in that state, in your state, and what do we know about what came out of that meeting between that group of mayors and governor desantis? >> reporter: craig, florida is very much the epicenter. in the epicenter of the state there is the epicenter of south florida. so the numbers have just been released again today for the state positive tests, at 10,085. that's up from yesterday's 9,200. we see it going up and down. of course, what everybody wanted to see was the numbers going down. over the weekend we had a record 15,300. the problem is across the state. but, as i say, the epicenter is really here in south florida. in miami-dade, broward and pooech

dallas, texas today posted its worst numbers yet. dallas county has seen a record-breaking number of cases for five straight days. no corpus christi, which is in southeast texas, the regional health system points out they're down to nine available icu beds, nine total in that county. in san antonio, more than 800 critical care nurses are on their way to augment that city's hospital system to try to help with the onslaught of patients in san antonio. local officials in san antonio have also asked the state of texas to please staff a 250-bed field hospital in addition to the hospital space that san antonio already has. the medical director for the san antonio region has, quote, warned that the community is on a worst-case scenario trajectory for covid hospitalizations. references one local model that forecasts 1,900 patients in the san antonio region by mid-august. that's a load that would exceed local hospital capacity. quote, for the last few days, hospitalizations have been rising even faster than that model's worst projections. it'

from dallas, texas, casey. >> let's talk about florida, which is another big hot spot. hospitalizations are a very important metric to watch when it comes to measuring how severe covid-19 is impacting a particular community. most states offer detailed information about that data either on the website sort dashboards. florida does not. right now, the department of health only shows cumulative across the whole state. no info about the current number of patients, what communities they are in, how many are in icu or on ventilators. that information will soon be included in the states reporting. because health experts have argued that the data is helpful as florida grapples with a surge of new cases particularly among young people. >> you have a responsibility not to come into close contact with folks that could be more vulnerable. if we protect the vulnerable, we are going to be able to get through this patch adequately. >> multiple communities across florida have decided to close beach is like in miami, the florida keys and palm beach. new numbers from the cdc show, corona
