desantis: yep. >> [indiscernible] gov. desantis: no, they should not recruit. when you do the percent positive for new cases, it is the total number of tests minus those who have previously tested positive, regardless of whether it is positive or negative. if you tested positive and you're trying to get out of quarantine and you have two negatives, those are not counted. if you test positive, those are not counted, because that is not telling us about anything with the spread so it is a more accurate barometer because we have had people who tested positive five times, six times, while they are in isolation, so that skews it. if you test negative twice, you have already had it. that is not necessarily meaning there's more negatives. that is how it should be done. they should not be counting it. i asked the department of health to follow up. i know it has been reported about some of the lab. traditionally, they only report the positive. with covid, we instructed do the negatives. most of them have done it but i think as it has been pointed out, there are some lab

florida governor desantis was heckled by an angry resident moments ago. the man saying you are doing nothing to him. as disturbing covid-19 numbers come out of the state today. the governor is still holding that news conference but so far not announced any updates or protocols for the state. this as florida has shattered records of 15,000 new cases over the weekend. 15,000 new cases over the weekend. that is the most of any state at any time during the pandemic. that number out 12,624 today. the state surpassed numbers reported by new york during the height of its battle with the coronavirus back in april. and all of this as disney world opened for visitors in orlando and the debate of school reopening also continues. joining me now is the mayor of orange county in florida, jerry demings. welcome, mayor. thank you for being here. governor desantis so far hasn't yet announced any major changes in protocol for the state. 15,000 new cases on sunday. over 12,000 today. what would you be putting in place if you could ask the governor to change something right

and the governor desantis is sending 100 health care workers to miami hospitalizations in your county, miami-dade county have increased, as you know, 90% over the last two weeks alone. how worried are you, mayor, that the hospitals in miami beach, in miami itself throughout the county could be overwhelmed fairly soon? >> well, the problem is if this spike continues, that's a very legitimate -- in fact, you know, the real problem is that because this thing shows up two weeks after a spike, the spikes we just saw, we are not feeling yet in intensive care or in ventilators and in the sort of the critical care that a lot of those folks need. the real concern we just saw this weekend in these last four days is going to manifest itself in two weeks in ways that we're not prepared for. so this is real, and i think everybody needs to understand that because if they did, they would know what to do. they would wear masks. they would socially distance themselves. they would take precautions that every doctor i know tells them they should take. >> they certainly should. it's simple to do and it w

desantis was just at the white house on friday for an announcement. so they are very closely aligned. but the report indicates that desantis has only met with the state's top health official once, according to his official calendar, in the month. and that the state health department has stopped having briefings with all of those key stakeholders that i just mentioned, hospital administrators, disease experts from around the state. making it sound like desantis is kind of going it alone in making decisions on how the state is handling the virus. the article indicates that he really consults with his chief of staff and wife to make decisions. but he does have his defenders who said desantis sent state worker news nursing home because he saw what happened in new jersey, new york, where the disease ravaged many, many people. and so he's been very proactive in protecting nursing homes early on from the disease and they point out he's not inflexible. last month when he saw that reopening was causing a spike in virus infections, that he rolled back the openi

people are scared and we have seen very little to no leadership from governor desantis. at the end of the press conference he mentioned that he would be calling the white house again for guidance of what to do here in the state and our numbers are skyrocketing. not only on the number of individuals testing positive but the positivity rating, we have no enforcement. the governor opened up too fast against the actual advice of all of our experts across the state and then had no enforcement. arbitrarily from phase one to phase two, opening up the bars, establishments across the state and seeing this spike and the problem is the governor continues to down play the seriousness of what's happening here in florida which means that he is not taking active plans how to make sure that we are not seeing an increase in deaths and not seeing an increase in numbers of positivity. the hospital beds at capacity and all he keeps talking about is what's happening at the white house or what's happening in our hospitals. how about working together to try to prevent people from getting sick

ron desantis faced this parade of protesting teachers today. and joining me now, scott walker, a seventh grade english teacher in massachusetts, and amy gasser, a seventh and eighth grade science teacher in ohio. and both of you are parents as well. so you bring a really unique perspective to this discussion, amy. schools are confronting a real struggle here. the risk of contracting coronavirus versus the risk to kids at home who aren't being educated. as a teacher and a mother, what is your reaction to the president saying he'll put pressure on schools to reopen? >> with him saying that today, we have to then just move forward. we need to look at the rules and regulations, keep social distancing, look at the masks. and as a teacher, i want to make sure that my environment is safe for all of my students with encouraging the handwashing and sanitizing. they tell us to go back to school, we'll go back to school. and i will talk to my own two daughters and explain to them that they need to pay attention to the rules that, we need to follow to keep

let's talk about governor desantis. he was one of the first ones out of the box to sate let's reopen. is the governor continuing to have the political support of the people in florida or are people starting to wonder about whether he should be more strict when it comes to social distancing? sean: you're talking to a big-time democrat in florida. i would certainly say his support is eroding, even if i'm trying to be objective. when this first started, our governor isour extremely tied to donald trump. he only won his race because donald trump endorsed him in the primary. to donaldwes a lot trump. he is much more interested in the economy and the appearance of normalcy than health and risks and what the sciences. he was late to close the beaches in florida. he was in a spat with governor cuomo from new york, and we did not do much to shut down florida, then our governor did a victory lap and set our cases are not even that bad, we are not even spiking that bad in florida. we do not need to do all of the restrictive things

and then desantis boasted about florida's success. his secret? having jared kushner on speed dial. >> jared, he had a team, going around, like, figuring out where the ventilators would be needed. so when everyone was talking about 40,000 ventilators in new york... i'm in contact with jared about florida, about new york, and he was saying, well, they're not going to need that. and i was like, look, i, actually, i agree with your numbers, i don't think we need any ventilators in florida right now. maybe things will change. so they were ready at a moment's notice to get the ventilators wherever they were needed. they were absolutely ready, willing, and able to do that once the data suggested it. >> stephen: look, i'm not saying desantis is an ass-kisser. i'm just saying, in a pinch, he could use kushner's butt as a ventilator. oh, hey! there's news from the world of air travel! there's still a world of air travel. i thought the airlines had just let all the planes return to the wild. it turns out, not only are the airlines flying, they're still crow

trouble started in early may when desantis rushed to reopen before many other states. restaurants, gyms, barbershops and beaches were first to reopen in most parts of the state. after memorial day the virus was starting to rage. by july 1st there were more than 9,000 new cases reported in one day statewide. and recently new daily cases topped 11,000. but if you listen to desantis there's a disconnect. >> i think we've stabilized where we're at. >> reporter: that's just not true and the data proves it. since reopening florida's average number of daily new cases has jumped to more than 1,200%. and dozens of hospitals throughout the state have run out of icu beds. in the last two weeks in hard hit miami-dade county the need for icu beds has increased 88%, and ventilator use jumped 123%. the state's positivity rate is hovering close to 30%. >> we are in the midst of a very, very vicious spike in our community in miami-dade county and, you know, one thing you can't have is for a governor or a president trying to down-play it as if it's not an urgent thing we need to pay att

governor desantis saying there was no justification not to move forward at the time. so, what happened? >> reporter: well, a lot happened, ana. i mean, he does point to increased testing, the governor here likes to point to increased testing for those higher positivity rates and the higher number of cases, but the governor early on refused to shut down the state and a lot of people just took it upon themselves to self-isolate. cell phone data that has been tracked shows that floridians just stayed home. they tried to play it safe. so, there was a lot of thinking that florida would escape the worst of it, but somehow, here in florida, things went terribly wrong. on april 1st, florida governor ron desantis issued a stay-at-home order, hoping to contain the coronavirus. weeks later, while visiting the white house, the governor took a victory lap for how he managed things back home. >> everyone in the media was saying florida was going to be like new york or italy, and that has not happened. we had a tailored and measured approach that not only helped our numbers be way b
