our congressional government reporter emberley wilkins -- emily wilkins is in washington. emily: at this point, everything is a little bit up in the air. officials from the white house were at congress today. they met with republicans, they met with democrats. this negotiation process we have come to expect, but a number of senate republicans left the room saying they were not confident about what was in the bill. remember this is the senate republicans' bill they are negotiating with democrats. even trump said there were parts of the republican plan he does not agree with. while i think some things for testing funding and virus research, i think there is a lot that is still up in the air at this point. there are provisions in the bill that everyone seems to oppose, like fbi pug -- fbi funding, which is drawing bipartisan scorn. there seems to be unanimous it is something the trump administration once but none of the legislators do. emily: this is reminding everyone that a tax cut was something the administration wanted and pushed, but it did not have momentum on the hill

emily wilkins joins us from d.c. these comments from mike pompeo are extraordinary, painting president xi jinping as a tyrant , that america and its allies need to essentially stop beijing from being a tyrant both domestically with their own people and internationally. were these comments expected with the unraveling of the bilateral relationship? i think we have seen comments from secretary pompeo as well as others in the trump administration, even republicans and democrats in the wider u.s. government, but increasingly negative tone towards china and toward beijing. i think these comments are the natural progression of other comments we have heard from secretary pompeo in the last several months. the ccp to change its direction falls short of calling for a regime change, but some of the things he said about xi jinping were very strong criticisms, towards him in the communist party as a whole. shery: and the pressure coming from all sides. the justice department charging four individuals and arresting three chinese

emily wilkins joins us now from washington. what is the latest we know in terms of the negotiations between the two sides? >> today was the day senate republicans finally released their bill of what they would like to see in the next coronavirus stimulus. we have been waiting for this since may, when democrats passed their bill. republicans wanted to see what happened with the economy. they are coming out with a $1 trillion bill with payments for schools, americans. a lot of stuff in there. democrats are saying it does not go far enough. i am sure we are going to see them trying to make sure that the bill has funding in it for american businesses and families and individuals. >> mitch mcconnell, calling this bill a starting place they cannot pass without democrats. what are we expecting in terms of which areas the democrats and republicans can actually compromise on? >> we are probably going to be seeing this play out over the next two weeks, perhaps a little bit longer. lawmakers are scheduled to be leaving d.c. and going back
