straight to msnbc justice correspondent pete williams. i believe we have our first decision involving the new york district attorney. pete? >> so by a vote of 7-2, the supreme court has said that the president is not absolutely immune from a state grand jury criminal process, the court does not seem that concerned about the second prospect the president raised about harassment from district attorneys across the country who are politically elected, harassing the president by a 7-2 vote, the supreme court has ruled in favor of the district attorney cyrus vance. we are looking through the opinion here to see whether there are any further restrictions on this, whether this has to go back to a lower court, but this is a victory for cyrus vance. now that does not mean -- so the court is saying the president does have the authority to challenge specific subpoenas that deal with the office of the president, if any of what the grand jury wants touches on his official duties, but remember, the bulk of what the grand jury is seeking here in this cas

that's coming up on msnbc. g up . >>> all right. some breaking news this morning coming out of the supreme court. this is regarding grand jury documents from the russian investigation and whether or not congress can have access to them. we have more on this story. ken, what do we know? >> ahman, the supreme court has announced they will hear this case, but in the fall term. so as a practical matter, what that seems to mean is we will not see these documents if at all before the election, and what's at issue are the small percentage of documents in the mueller report that were redacted for the reasons of grand jury secrecy. normally it's secret if there's not an indictment. the house committee has argued they're entitled to the material and there's precedent for this during watergate. a grand jury report was turned over to the house judiciary committee during the nixon impeachment inquiry, but the supreme court stepped in, blocked that, and now they're going to hear the case and potentially set a precedent from here on end, but it's

let me begin msnbc contributor. david, president trump really trying to say to republicans, to supporters, the message is a little divisive here. when you boil down the rhetoric to the underlying message, what is it for you? what stands out for you that he is trying to convey to his base? >> yeah, look, there's donald trump the candidate, the divisive personality we know, and his message, then there's the campaign message, which softens some of the edges around it. i think what you'll see, to carol's point, donald trump cannot run on the past four years. we see the ceiling in his numbers when we're talking about the last four years. he'll disconnect from reality a little bit, and he will run on the promise of the next four years. he will talk about law and order. he will talk about lower taxes. he'll talk about a stronger border, cheaper health care, however disconnected that is from the reality of the last four years. that will be the core message. donald trump will use inflammatory language. when the corners are s
