randi weingarten says we want to reopen but we need to care about children's health as much as we care about peoples health in bars. do you think we need to put more resources and money into schools, whether they are public are secretary devos evens at private schools to help them have the resources to safely reopen? >> state, i think where to see the plans that the different schools and jurisdictions come up with. obviously if there are barriers to be able to open the schools that are really important to overcome, then we have to address that. when i say we, i mean we as a nation. but but i know a number of schos are working to develop their reopening plans. i don't think there's anything intrinsic to the guidance. the cdc has suggested people consider that is prohibited from a point of view of -- but again i think ultimately that's going to be decided as each of these different schools and districts decide what their exact plan is. i don't think we should go overboard and tried to develop a system that does not recognize the reality that this virus really is relatively benign to thos

weingarten said. >> we will lose a lot of really good teachers because they are scared and they don't know who to believe or what to believe. we can't be a science deniers in the middle of a pandemic. >> john: cyndi barton, what are you hearing from your teachers and what they are saying about the potential to get back in school? >> you know, our teachers love our students, they want to be learning and they are still learning with their online platform. we pivoted on march 13, when we need the tough decision to close, we passed out 63 crumpled computers and delivered the best online and robust learning program that we could do. we passed out 3 million meal services, and all that was in place. we need to make sure it's going to work in a way that they feel safe and away they put the proper protections in place. we are looking at the infection rates and our teachers are working with us on that. it's important to give that back and make the safety conditions work. >> john: it's a little disappointing that it's online now but we know you are trying. >> our teachers know that we put the sc

joining us now is randi we weingarten and tina carroll. she's the parent calling for schools in her colorado district to offer some kind of in-classroom instruction. welcome to you both, thank you for being with us. >> thank you, chris, thank you, tina. >> randi, what is the chance that the teachers go on strike? >> so, i don't -- so, as you know, chris, i worked on your brother's reopening plan and i think in new york, you'll see a lot of schools reopening. i think in new jersey, you'll see, you know, you'll see some schools reopening, some not. colorado, i think you'll see some, some not. but i think in places with that surge, like florida, texas, arizona, i think you'll see people saying, there's no way we can reopen schools when we have huge community spread, no testing and no resources for any of the safeguards that are needed. >> quick follow-up question to you, and then i want to turn to tina for a second. why am i wrong to hate the hybrid model? which is where kids go to class a couple of days and home a couple of days. i see it at

randi weingarten is with us, president of the american federation of teachers. welcome to the program. great to see you again. let me put it to you, can i just put it to you from the point of view of educating children. it seems to me that virtual schooling has not been a success, it's hurting minorities most, and it's keeping some kids at home, some of them in abusive situations. now, under your strike threat, they will be out of school for a very long time and i think their education suffers. what's your response? >> so look, we actually agree with you, stuart. we think that we should be back in school and frankly, in april, we put out the first report about how to get there because we know that remote learning doesn't work, and frankly, before the surge resurged and before mr. trump and betsy devos's recklessness in july, 76% of my members polled in june thought if we got the federal funding and we could make it safe in those places where the virus had been contained, we could actually get back to school in a hybrid model. but all heck has broken out in the l

let's bring in randi weingarten, the long-time president of the american federation of teachers. randi, good morning to you, thanks for your time. >> good morning, craig great to be with you. >> in the simplest of terms, what do america's teachers need to return to their classrooms in the fall what's it going to take? >> so let me just debunk one myth, craig, because we put out, as you know, a plan to reopen schools safely in april. so this is not about politics for us, this is about safety and equity for both our kids and for our members and for our teachers so what it's going to take, we just polled our members in june. and what they said was that the kind of bundle of safety practices that europe used, that the child care centers used for the essential workers this march and april in new york, of the six-foot physical distancing that you showed and masks, cleaning and ventilation and then making sure that people who are at risk have that kind of reasonable accommodation that if you did these things, then 75% to 76% of my members felt comfortable about coming back to school bec
