well, a major shake-up in the bay area's biggest city. an unexpected announcement. san jose's police chief is retiring. chief eddie garcia just made that announcement about an hour ago. our own damian trujillo broke the story earlier today on twitter tweeting the chief's statement about his time in san jose. he grew up in "snl". nbc bay area's marianne favreau is at police headquarters with the big announcement. >> reporter: ed rhee garcia is a local success story. as you mentioned he grew up here in san jose and started at the department as a patrol officer more than 28 years ago. since then he has worked his way through the ranks. he has become a narcotics officer, a homicide investigator and ultimately the police chief. today mayor sam liccardo praised him for his commitment to the community. after more than 28 years on the force and four years as its chief, san jose's top cop, eddie garcia, says he is retiring. in a statement he told "nbc bay area news", i came to san jose as a young boy from puerto rico, learned how to speak english

we're seeing poor air quality throughout the entire bay area. current temperatures in the 80s and upper 90s in areas like concord, 97, livermore, 97 degrees. it's still hot out there but now we're going to start to feel that humidity. your hour by hour outlook heading into tonight. smoky skies, increasing high clouds. then the threat, if you notice, in the outlook, it doesn't really show much in the way of rain. well, that's because as this inches closer and as it approaches, the models sort of having a hard time picking up on some of that moisture. we're going to be seeing how it approaches. our best bet will always be to take a look as it's making its approach and also taking a look at satellite radar. right now you can see. this is a live look at at satellite radar. over san francisco, it looks quiet now but the tension is going to be focused where you can see that system churning there. that is what was hurricane genevieve, and the remnants, that moisture from that low pressure system are what's going to be impacting us here in the bay area.

you're watching "today in the bay." we continue to monitor all of the bay area fires. here's the latest this hour. the lnu complex in the north bay has burned 347,000 acres. more than 1,000 structures damaged or even destroyed. sadly four people have died. that fire is 21% contained. in the south bay the scu fire has green to nearly 344,000 acres and is 10% contained. evacuation warnings are now in place for parts of the tri-valley. the czu fire has claimed the life of a 70-year-old man near davenport. the fire has scorched 74,000 acres and is only 8% contained. more than 160 structures have been lost in the fire. >>> continuing our coronavirus coverage more than 664,000 cases. statewide confirmed cases are up slightly as well as deaths. some good news, hospitalizations continue to decrease and the infection rate remains below i workers. that means test results are available in about 15 minutes. airport leaders say rapid testing will allow workers to remain working rather than quarantining for days waiting for test results. >>> well, we're in the homestretch this week

it is bringing the heat into the bay area. as we look at what is coming down the line, the possibility that this will not budge over the next few days. it may just kind of move back and forth just a little bit, but we'll watch where the possibility where this could happen to some tropical moisture from a weakening hurricane that's right now over cabo san lucas. as we look at the current conditions right now. this is still hurricane genevieve that continues to weaken. right now wind speeds at 80 miles per hour. as it moves farther to the north, we'll see it continue to weaken. but, once again, that high pressure may draw in some of that tropical moisture and we know that is what sparked the storms and the lightning. as of right now hopefully that stays to the south and we'll just see the warm weather continue. that will be the best-case scenario here. looking at the seven-day forecast. a lot of 90s for the interior valleys. still not coming down into the 80s and i think our temperatures will peak on monday at 97 degrees. with s
