is a look from our nbc bay area sky ranger. you can see those intense flames and all the smoke coming out. in fact, you can see the smoke from all points of the peninsula, palo alto, san mateo, redwood city, all along the peninsula. so far about 1,000 acres have burned. mandatory evacuations are in effect for botano state park and barranca knolls community. an evacuation warning is in place for nearby communities of dearborn park and loma mar. pescadero high school is now open for anyone who needs to evacuate. we also have a live look in napa county where three fires are burning. this is near the hennessey fire near lake berryessa. 2,700 acres burned so far. mandatory evacuations are also in place. let's take a look at where all the fires are burning. we have a map for you. no containment, though, we should add in napa, alameda, contra costa, santa clara, and san mateo counties. here's that map. you can see all points of the bay area almost have fires. in the last hour, two fires also sparked in sonoma county, forcing evacuatio

well, a major shake-up in the bay area's biggest city. an unexpected announcement. san jose's police chief is retiring. chief eddie garcia just made that announcement about an hour ago. our own damian trujillo broke the story earlier today on twitter tweeting the chief's statement about his time in san jose. he grew up in "snl". nbc bay area's marianne favreau is at police headquarters with the big announcement. >> reporter: ed rhee garcia is a local success story. as you mentioned he grew up here in san jose and started at the department as a patrol officer more than 28 years ago. since then he has worked his way through the ranks. he has become a narcotics officer, a homicide investigator and ultimately the police chief. today mayor sam liccardo praised him for his commitment to the community. after more than 28 years on the force and four years as its chief, san jose's top cop, eddie garcia, says he is retiring. in a statement he told "nbc bay area news", i came to san jose as a young boy from puerto rico, learned how to speak english

we're seeing poor air quality throughout the entire bay area. current temperatures in the 80s and upper 90s in areas like concord, 97, livermore, 97 degrees. it's still hot out there but now we're going to start to feel that humidity. your hour by hour outlook heading into tonight. smoky skies, increasing high clouds. then the threat, if you notice, in the outlook, it doesn't really show much in the way of rain. well, that's because as this inches closer and as it approaches, the models sort of having a hard time picking up on some of that moisture. we're going to be seeing how it approaches. our best bet will always be to take a look as it's making its approach and also taking a look at satellite radar. right now you can see. this is a live look at at satellite radar. over san francisco, it looks quiet now but the tension is going to be focused where you can see that system churning there. that is what was hurricane genevieve, and the remnants, that moisture from that low pressure system are what's going to be impacting us here in the bay area.

you're watching "today in the bay." we continue to monitor all of the bay area fires. here's the latest this hour. the lnu complex in the north bay has burned 347,000 acres. more than 1,000 structures damaged or even destroyed. sadly four people have died. that fire is 21% contained. in the south bay the scu fire has green to nearly 344,000 acres and is 10% contained. evacuation warnings are now in place for parts of the tri-valley. the czu fire has claimed the life of a 70-year-old man near davenport. the fire has scorched 74,000 acres and is only 8% contained. more than 160 structures have been lost in the fire. >>> continuing our coronavirus coverage more than 664,000 cases. statewide confirmed cases are up slightly as well as deaths. some good news, hospitalizations continue to decrease and the infection rate remains below i workers. that means test results are available in about 15 minutes. airport leaders say rapid testing will allow workers to remain working rather than quarantining for days waiting for test results. >>> well, we're in the homestretch this week

it is bringing the heat into the bay area. as we look at what is coming down the line, the possibility that this will not budge over the next few days. it may just kind of move back and forth just a little bit, but we'll watch where the possibility where this could happen to some tropical moisture from a weakening hurricane that's right now over cabo san lucas. as we look at the current conditions right now. this is still hurricane genevieve that continues to weaken. right now wind speeds at 80 miles per hour. as it moves farther to the north, we'll see it continue to weaken. but, once again, that high pressure may draw in some of that tropical moisture and we know that is what sparked the storms and the lightning. as of right now hopefully that stays to the south and we'll just see the warm weather continue. that will be the best-case scenario here. looking at the seven-day forecast. a lot of 90s for the interior valleys. still not coming down into the 80s and i think our temperatures will peak on monday at 97 degrees. with s

their lives in the bay area to covid. >>well the jail in san francisco's hall of justice will be closed by labor day weekend mayor london breed and sheriff paul miyamoto announced the new timeline tuesday. it's months ahead of the november deadline. they've been calls as you may know to close that county jail for years now citing outdated and unsafe conditions for both the inmates and the sheriff's office staff. will san francisco's police commission has a new member take a look city leaders approved malia cohen. leah cohen to serve on the commission the seven-member body is charged with setting policy for the department and conducting disciplinary hearings when police conduct charges are filed. cohen currently serves on the california state board of equalization and mayor london breed nominated her to the commission. in the south bay, san jose leaders are remembering a key figure in the city's law enforcement former san jose city attorney rick doyle died on sunday just 2 weeks after celebrating his retirement. doyle was

area, the entire bay area sitting under red flag warning but i think the main concern near the coast layers i think that's where most that some tropical moisture may come in overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning, the one good thing. it's coming in the morning hours and usually don't have the lift to produce the thunderstorms but again there's the possibility of some of those lightning strike, here's a look at it as you'll see overnight tonight, some of the clouds rolling on in and then the models start to pick up on some of those raindrops even in the north bay you see that. yeah, the models possibly bringing some thunderstorms in the north bay about 00:30am in the morning. these very fast moving very difficult to forecast a larger swath of moisture moving right through san francisco extending into parts of the east bay as we head toward a lot of part of the morning and then i think by the afternoon of breaks up a little bit older return again by tomorrow night some that moisture once again rolling in across the bay area now overnight lows are going to stay relatively warm. an

now dry for those of you in santa rosa and more of the bay area for the most part. so we are noticing those lingering thunderstorms just to our north bringing imminent fire danger there, but we do have very hot and dry conditions for us here closer to home in the bay area where heat advisory in effect until 9 o'clock this evening for downtown san francisco, an excessive heat warning for nearly everyone else away from the immediate coastline that is going to remain in effect through wednesday at 9 o'clock so let's take a look at just how dry it is out there, especially for inland valleys, triple digit heat once again very hot dry conditions with relative humidity in the 20th to 30th percentile and because of nearby fires all of those spot fires of the dry lightning is caused in the last couple of days we are noticing an air quality advisory bringing moderate amounts of poor air particles through tuesday, so limit outdoor activity, especially for those of you with any pulmonary or respiratory issues tracking this heat wave because it's going to continue through mid-we

all bay area counties are on the list. here's melanie woodrow with the changes. >> reporter: after days of analyzing and accounting for backlogged cases, the governor released the new numbers with certainly today. a seven-day average of 9,446, with a backlogged cases added in. for yesterday, 6,469 covid-19 cases. >> those case numbers are high, but they are trending in the right direction. >> reporter: the governor also noted a 6.5% positivity rate. after the governor became aware of the data glitch and underreported cases, state officials froze the watch lists. with all the backlogged cases accounted for, the dwofr nor -- governor revealed what that meant. august 3rd, there had been 38 counties on the list, now there are 42. mendocino county is among those counties added. and santa cruz county has been taken off. factors driving mendocino's elevated covid-19 transmissions include family and community gatherings, as well as outbreaks in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. in order for a county to come off the w

we're going north bay now where the largest of the three bay area fires is rangeriraging tonight. slowly but surely, the crews are making progress. some evacuation orders being lifted which means some people are allowed to return home. now, here's where the fire stands right now. more than 350,000 acres have burned. containment is up to 27%. nearly 1,000 homes and other structures, though, have been destroyed and tonight some of the victims are getting a firsthand look at what's left. this fire also the deadliest. five people have died. today we learned one of the victims was a disabled man. jodi hernandez joins us from vacaville. >> reporter: james leon bone lived in the english hills area of rural vacaville all of his life. we are told he was mentally and visually challenged. he could barely see. he didn't have a phone. he didn't drive. and sadly he did not survive. >> he deserved a life and he deserved -- he deserved to know that he was -- he was loved. >> stephanie is beside herself thinking about her neighbor who lost his life when the lnu complex fire blew through rural vaca

marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> so what does the backlog mean for bay area counties? santa clara county reported 751 new days. the county says that that includes those stuck in the backlog. that number is significantly higher than what santa clara county has been averaging over the past week, which is 196 cases. this is just one example of what bay area health leaders across the state still have to short out as they clear that backlog. governor newsome also responded to president trump's executive order saying the state can't afford the unemployment plan. the president signed it on friday. the states would have to contributing $100. the extra cash would be a huge benefit for californians who have lost their jobs during the pandemic, but newsom says the plan is too much of a burden and would cost the state $700 million a week. >> there is no money sitting in the piggy bank of the previous c.a.r.e.s. act to be reprioritized or reconstituted for this purpose. >> newsom says 75% of the c.a.r.e.s. act funding was allocated to various programs. >>> many businesses continue

nbc bay area's bob redell joining us live now. certainly not the way you'd expect to start the new year with the district as well as the union working to figure out how they're going to teach. >> reporter: but classes are still going on virtually in oakland unified starting earlier this morning. for about a month what the teachers day should look like in this age of virtual instruction, specifically how many hours of instruction per day and how long do the teachers have to work each day when they're not actually virtually teaching their students. while they're still trying to balance the needs of their own families. we just heard from oakland unified their spokesperson wouldn't divulge how many hours of instruction they are asking for versus what the teachers want. >> i don't really want to go into the details of it. but, you know, we know that there have been a number of school districts that have settled their mous in similar circumstances. and we're more towards what those other districts have done. and so it's just a matter of
