florida's governor declaring a state of emergency for parts of his state. officials there are scrambling to shut down beaches and parks, along with most state outdoor covid testing sites. the president was also in florida today, holding a mini rally there at the airport, though few were seen wearing masks. the president today continued his attack on mail-in voting as questions arise on whether new postal procedures may deliberately be leading to delays in service, and how that's going to impact the election. well, tonight, florida is one of at least 16 states where deaths continue to increase, and 28 states see cases continue to rise. and in just a few hours, federal funding will officially run out for american families hit hard by the lockdown economy. it is a remarkable combination of events, and we have a team of correspondents with all the latest details tonight. cbs' david begnaud is going to lead off our coverage in miami beach. good evening, david. >> reporter: good evening, norah. two major headlines from here: number one, there is a hurricane warni

hopefully all goes well tonight. >> florida governor ron desantis there with the latest out of florida on what has become tropical storm isaias. that is still moving closer to the florida coastline, and we do know now of some evacuations that are in place, especially there in palm beach county, which could get the brunt of this but of course the big issue here is also this happening at the same time that that state is still trying to wrap its arms around this global pandemic. the coronavirus. and so he's telling people, hunker down in your own homes if you can to stay safe instead of going to shelters. let me get to meteorologist chad myers, tracking the storm from the cnn weather center, and we also have rosa flores standing by in miami. but let's start with chad as we're learning this storm has been downgraded but we heard the governor there, chad, say it could still ramp back up. >> oh and it's forecast to. it is forecast to become a hurricane again. isaias had a very bad day. it had a very hard day with wind and also very dry air. and so that sheer that we call it and the dry air w

let's take you to florida first. this is the first state standing in the way of tropical storm isaias. randi kaye is in palm beach county for us. first let's check in on the storm's latest track and meteorologist chad myers joins us from the cnn weather center. chad, what is in store for florida and the east coast? >> i think the storm is blowing up right now, which means getting bigger. blowing up as an explosive development. it was dying all day, it looked horrible all day. dry air. it was over land basically. not very high land but still wasn't over warm water. now it's over water. now we've got the shear out of the way and the dry air out of the way and there is a huge thunderstorm complex to the north of what we call the center. it's an eye, yes, but it doesn't really look like an eye yet on radar. but if this northern part wraps around and becomes an eye, we're going to get rapid intensification in the overnight hours. right now we're somewhere around a 66 to 70-mile-per-hour storm. there's some shear on the wa

those are the squall lines moving into south florida. it's tapered off in miami to homestead, there is more out to the east. so going around the horn here up to broward and palm beach county, you had a nice grazing come through. then along the treasure coast, you are seeing a lot of rainfall at the moment. especially up here at sebastian to ft. pierce and sebastian, you should have a heads up. i think when hurricane what will be hurricane isaias gets close to you, it will be very close to making landfall. if it doesn't brush up against your coastline, it's definitely going to brush up right against i would say around melbourne to titusville as a category-1 hurricane. it continues to the north and weakens, once again, to a tropical storm somewhere around charleston to myrtle beach. it pushes onto the northeast, new england states, you will be dealing with a tropical storm as well, unbelievable stuff w. every tropical storm, can i say this, because i used to work in the power industry with every tropical system, you will get power outages.
