i'm kim brunhuber and you're watching "cnn newsroom. >>> cnn has learned two senior aides to u.s. vice president mike pence tested positive for coronavirus. that includes the man you see there, mark short, his chief of staff. despite pence being in close contact with short as recently as friday, the vice president plans to continue campaigning. he was in florida saturday and plans to visit north carolina later today. this comes as the u.s. reports its second-highest day of new coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. on saturday, more than 83,000 people were diagnosed, just shy of the record high set on friday. that's according to data tracked by johns hopkins university. a white house report warns several regions in the u.s. are showing signs of deterioration with the virus surging. 35 states are reporting case increases of 10% or more. no state, not one of them, is trending in the right direction. several european countries are hitting record highs of covid-19 infections and many fear cases will continue to go up as we approach winter. plus more european leaders are testing p

cnn's salma abdelaziz is ko covering the story from manchester, england, and cnn's melissa bell is joining us from paris. good to see cryou both. what is latest on the record coronavirus cases in france, and curfews? >> reporter: rises in the number of cases every day above 25,000. tonight, close to 30,000. a fresh record was set on saturday, but these are large rises in the number of new cases, and these are going to have a knock on effort in a couple of weeks in terms of the entry into icu. just to tell you where we are nationally in france, at the moment, 35% of icu beds at a national level are already taken by covid-19 patients so that is likely to get worse over the course of the next couple of weeks. the positivity rate in france, 13.2%, and of course the problem with those curfews is that even if they have an impact on the figures, it's going to take some time for the impact to be felt, both in terms of the number of new cases announced daily and of course in terms of the number of people entering icu, and we remain here in places like the greater paris area the particular worry bec

i'm kim brunhuber and you're watching "cnn newsroom." just ahead, with six days left to vote in the u.s. election, donald trump and joe biden make their closing pitches in some surprising places, but record numbers of americans have already made up their minds. preelection voting makes up more than half of the voting. and the white house claims it's ended the pandemic despite cases reaching new heights. reality check on that ahead in this hour. >>> all right. we're in the last final stretch of the u.s. presidential election so let's take a look at the state of the race six days out from november 3rd. more than 68 million ballots have already been cast according to a survey by cnn edson research and catalyst. that's more than half the turnout from the 2016 election. it's not over yet, of course. the candidates are still campaigning. president donald trump did a swing through three states he carried in 2016, michigan, wisconsin and nebraska. joe biden visited georgia, a state his party hasn't won since 1992. trump has a busy wednesday plan

you compare the cnn poll at this point in 2016 and the cnn poll now and what you see now is that more people at this point say they're certain to vote than said the same in 2016 so i think there's going to be a significantly larger turnout this year than four years ago. >> with this surge in early voting, both by mail and in-person, could this impact when the race is called? because we know some states wait until election day to process these early votes, right? >> yeah. definitely could. and in the closest six states from four years ago, michigan, arizona, florida, north carolina, pennsylvania, wisconsin, take a look here. michigan, the small cities, pennsylvania and wisconsin, in those states, these early votes will not begin to get processed until election day, and so look, these are places, especially pennsylvania and wisconsin, that really just have no real history of this large early vote, so it could take days to get those votes counted and we might not know who's won those states until wednesday, thursday, or even friday after the election, if not longer. >> and on top of that
