we saw the wind kari was talking about, so why the change here? >> reporter: weather conditions changed for the better. good morning, marcus. pg&e yesterday told us they would be shutting off power to more than 4300 customers in the bay area. some in the east bay, where we're at, some in the south bay but primarily in the north bay, mostly in napa. those, we were notified over about an hour ago that they were canceling them. those planned power shutoffs not happening in alameda, contra costa, lake, napa, santa clara and sonoma counties. 32,000 customers have lost power in other parts of the northern california. that red flag warning still in effect for most of the bay area. because of the low humidities and high wind gusts, that means there is a high risk for wildfires. national weather service reports winds are the strongest here in the east bay, as kari mentioned, wind gusts up to 53 miles an hour in the hills behind me here in dublin. here on the valley floor we're not feeling those gusts, just some breezy conditions. again, these are dangerous

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all of this for us. kari? >>> with that spare the air alert they do want us to, of course, limit the amount of pollution we're putting in the air because there's already so much from the wildfires in the north bay. and so as we look at our north bay air quality it's still going to be unhealthy throughout today but we've seen some improvements elsewhere still looking pretty good across the rest of the bay area from the coast to the east bay down to the south bay. our temperatures are going to be very nice this afternoon for your walk outdoors. a cooldown of five or six degrees from yesterday. mike, what's going on with the commute? >>> kari, commute wise everything seems pretty cool but i have to give that warning again. we talked about alamo. 680 a deer was hit up there. it's out of lanes and everything is moving smoothly. watch the construction north into fremont to sunol. highway 17, i've circled it there, south of the 7, reports of a deer and a bumper in lanes. we're talking about deer jumping across the ro

meteorologist kari hall is tracking it all today. hi, kari. >>> it makes it so hard because finally we have some cooler, more comfortable weather, and i know a lot of people want to get out and enjoy it. if you have asthma, if you have breathing problems or covid-19, it really can irritate your respiratory system. as we take a look at what's going on with our temperatures today we are going to see mostly some mid-60s as we head to the lunch hour. it's still going to be nice and mild, even coolish in a lot of spots. into the afternoon we're only reaching into the mid-70s for concord. 71 in napa. you can see the temperatures about 72 degrees. and heading into the evening the wind starts to pick up and will drop back to the mid to upper 60s. a very nice, comfortable day. we will have a few more days like this in the forecast. we'll talk about what's ahead and also the weather systems we've been monitoring bringing us more clouds. how is it looking right now for the commute, mike? >>> kari, things are changing, i think, for the more favo

meteorologist kari hall has the inside scoop on that. kari, can we see any snow on the way? >>> there's no nature made snow but temperatures have been cold enough in the morning hours to allow them to start making the snow so it is cool to see that happening. let's get a look at what we have happening here in the bay area and even though in the valleys we're waking up to calmer winds, they are still gusting in the upper elevations. a wind gust at 76 so we're still looking at high winds in the upper elevations and that's the reason why this warning has been extended until 5:00 this evening. still watching out for the fire danger. mike, what are you watching on the morning commute? >>> the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll start to see things build. those middle lanes now just starting to tap those brakes as they approach. the incline as we show on the map will be slowing on the left side. on the right slowing through concord there's a construction zone there and a crash just around willow pass -- around highway 4. the rest of the bay, guys, looking great and clear. back to you. >>

will it ever again, kari hall? >>> yeah, we've had some cool mornings around the bay area, but still some gusty winds making it feel even more chilly as you get started out the door, and that's the reason we do still have the red flag warning continuing for today. in the north and east bay hills, warm temperatures this afternoon, warmer than where we should be. at least we do have calmer weather by the end of the week as we check out our high temperatures this is what you can expect a high of 75 in palo alto and oakland. san francisco will reach 72. a high of 72 today in santa rosa. we'll talk more about the fire danger coming up. mike, how is it looking now for the commute? >>> actually, kari, we have a very smooth commute but there is an issue that just came in through the newsroom if you're just joining us. let's take you out to the maps where the speed sensors are looking great right now. no major problems. we do have the bay bridge metering lights on but light backup. the metering lights only have a backup and

kari hall warning us about it for days. kari, break all of this down for us. >> there's so much to watch. we can see how terrible it is outside. we really can't see the sun right now. we're watching for that red flag warning that will go up at 1:00 this afternoon. that means that the winds will increase, the humidity will continue to drop, and we have that along with this heat advisory really hot temperatures for today, including all of the bay area with the exception of the immediate coastline. we also have the spare the air alert with the unhealthy air quality continuing today as well as tomorrow with some minor improvements as we head into the weekend. once again we do this a flex alert where we should conserve energy starting at 3:00 this afternoon. these are the areas included in the red flag warning. but the national weather service also expanded that for the diablo range, parts of oakland hills, and over towards santa cruz mountains. as we can also see potential for new fire starts and also quickly spreading flames.

how are we looking, kari? >>> we are still seeing the drifts of smoke but it is being carried higher into the atmosphere so we're not seeing it pushed down to the surface and really choking us out like it did last week. we've seen the changes in the wind direction but we're also going to see still some smoke coming in to the east bay from the north bay, but we are seeing improvements elsewhere. looking at our wind direction, wind speeds. we are looking at more of a southerly wind for today but then as it turns westerly it brings in a slight boost in the ocean breeze helping cool down some of our coastal temperatures. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking now for the commute? >>> kari, it's looking different than expected but not a surprise. we'll look at the bay bridge. we have the backup and the metering lights were turned on at 5:30 this morning just because, i believe, visibility may be a factor crossing the span. there's low clouds visible and they're drifting acros

kari, what is it looking like for us? >>> well, we are starting out with two red flag warnings that will be in effect and watching conditions around both of those for this morning as we start out with this last day of heat for today. we're talking about highs reaching into the upper 80s. we'll have two time frames we're watching the potential of a high fire danger but it will be a much cooler weekend as we check out our temperatures and as well as the high wind gusts we've seen over the past 24 hours. we've seen some of those gusts yesterday afternoon picking up to 28 miles an hour in the east bay. as we head out the door to work, mike, how is it looking for the commute? >>> kari, gusty wind, of course, especially as folks are traveling over bridges. no warnings from chp but we'll listen for kari's update as well. no major problems but talking about a bridge, the antioch bridge, heading north out of brentwood and heading up there 160 where there's a disabled vehicle but only affecting the wilbur avenue off ramp, a truck a

kari? >> right. we're going to start off with taking a look at our drought conditions because we know it's been so dry. we will get the drought monitor update this morning but our vegetation has been very crispy because we didn't get a lot of rain this year. now we have severe drought conditions for much of the north bay and, in fact, it's extreme drought conditions. we have a lot of severe drought heading over from santa rosa to san francisco and over towards the east bay and then for the south bay, we are now in a moderate drought. so with this, we've seen our reservoirs going way down. right now our south bay reservoirs are only at 34% of the historical average. so, as those levels continue to drop, unfortunately, we are not looking very good here with the drought conditions and very low reservoir storage. but then as we look statewide, we are doing a little bit better especially as you head towards southern california where there's no drought conditions right now at this point. so, the drought ha

kari, how long is this going to last? >> well, we're going to be under this wind advisory through 11:00 this morning, it's been so gusty and it's coming along with very low humidity, we have to be careful over these new few hours, hopefully, we don't get any major fires going, some of our mountain wind gusts that's where it's been really high. take a look at mt. st. helena, a wind gust at 89 miles per hour. middletown, a wind gust topped 71 miles per hour. kalaveras reached 63 miles per hour. we're still seeing those really high wind gusts, mostly coming in from the north and northeast. very low humidity. we've seen it in the teens and single digits in some spots. the reason why we still have this high fire danger, we'll take that time line through this afternoon, we'll see those winds starting to gradually calm down, here we are at 4:30 this afternoon, wind gusts close to 30 miles per hour. calming down for tonight. still breezy along with low humidity as this very strong cold front moves through. we're seeing the high p

meteorologist kari hall has been keeping track what we can expect for the friday forecast and, kari, you made me smile already. take it away. >>> okay. let's hope that continues as we talk about what's going on in the forecast. it is going to be a really nice day. let's check out our high temperatures as we first start out in the south bay with san jose reaching 74 degrees. that is going to be so comfortable. nice and not as windy as it's been the last couple of days as danville reaches 78 degrees. a high of 71 in oakland. 79 in livermore. and as you head over to the coastline today for a friday afternoon you might want to take a jacket to half moon bay. we'll be in the low 60s. palo alto will reach 73 degrees and san francisco reaching up to about 67 degrees in the mission district and sonoma up to 77 degrees while ukiah will reach 81. okay, let's talk about the concerns i have for the weekend forecast. so the national weather service dropped the red flag warning for this morning as the winds have calmed down, and now we turn our attention to the next high wind event that we'll see

meteorologist kari hall still working for us. still dark out there, but how is it looking for us now? >> it is going to be a cooler day and i'm so looking forward to not having to run the air conditioning as much as we see our highs coming down to the low 80s. for some of our warmest spots and it will continue into the weekend. but as we make it towards that cooler weather, it's going to be quite gusty and that, of course, increases our fire danger especially in the hills. today our high temperature in san francisco will reach 72 and 85 in napa and 80 in martinez and we'll see mid 80s, as well, for parts of the south bay. we'll talk more about this coming up. mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute? >> we have a few slow spots, kari. i'll talk about both sides of the bay. but, first, i want to show you crossing the bay at the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights yet. we're holding pretty steady with the middle lanes as the slowest one and we see more traffic coming off that 880 overcrossing. we'll look at t

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that and, kari, how is it looking out there for us? >> yeah, a lot of people getting ready to head out for the morning commute. let's check out our east bay commutes and temperatures mostly in the 50s as we get started and it's going to be a cool morning but then much more comfortable as we go towards lunchtime going into the upper 70s by 12:00 here. and our temperatures will be warming up for today but we're coming down a few degrees compared to yesterday. let's take it through lunchtime. we'll see those temperatures at about 75 degrees in santa rosa and in san jose and then along the coastline, we'll have some 50s making it into the 60s today and a nice afternoon ahead. we'll talk about what's coming our way for the weekend, but also monitoring that fire danger. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> well, kari, you set the ambience around the area. on the roadways or in the roadways in some cases where we see slowing through oakland. 880 southbound, though, actually starting to show a little better speed towards 23rd. i think t

i'm also matching kari hall. we have the pumpkin spice memo today, i see. >>> yeah, we've been talking about hot weather, so we're wearing bright clothing for today. and those are some of the things i'm watching in the forecast, the fire danger, the hot temperatures especially in the valleys this afternoon. we're also going to have some of those high wind gusts kicking up especially in the north bay. we're reaching into the upper 80s in the tri-valley. 85 in san jose and just keep in mind that's about ten degrees above normal so this is not the way we're supposed to be in the middle of october. we'll talk about our forecast ahead as it does cool off. how is it looking for the commute right now, mike? >>> not the way it's supposed to be for b.a.r.t. riders. hold with me as we show a major delay listed in san francisco heading towards dublin and reports of equipment problems at the balboa park station. this may ripple out to more lines, but that's what b.a.r.t. reports now. the bay bridge toll plaza shows you the b

kari is here with that. a look at the air quality. >>> the air quality is what we've been watching for the past couple of months. it's been really bad and we do have to plan our day around how much smoke we have in the air. a look at our numbers. in the south bay we're seeing moderate air quality as the smoke settles into santa clara. one other thing i'm watching will be our fire danger. starting up later this evening the potential of high fire danger. we're looking at a northerly wind that will start to pick up with gusts up to 30 to 40 miles an hour and then some of those sustained winds at about 10 to 25 miles per hour. we'll have very low humidity. let's head to the south bay as we see our high temperatures reaching into the low 80s for downtown san jose. upper 80s for the south county and then for the east bay we're going to see those high temperatures up to 88 in antioch. 75 in oakland. some foggy conditions in half moon bay with some mid-60s, and also a lot of 60s in san francisco in the marina distri

no rain in sight, kari? >> no rain in sight, but my kids do not like the car wash so that would make it even worse. i think they would be like basically scarred for life if we did that. let's get a look at our forecast as we get ready to head out and we had the east bay regional parks closed for the past couple of days due to high winds and today is going to be a great day for getting out there for a hike. we're starting out with temperatures in the mid 40s and chilly start and going to be so comfortable during the afternoon as we reach into the upper 70s and we're going to see a few low 80s. palo alto reach 77 degrees and some upper 60s in san francisco. checking out the forecast for this weekend. it's going to be clear. nice view of the moon, which will be a blue moon. we call it that because it's the second full moon of the month and it's the first time since 2001 that we've had a full moon on halloween. so, that makes it even more spooky for us. let's get a look at this forecast. it will be in the upper

let's turn to kari for a look at the weather. how's it looking, kari? >> well, i think we'll want to try to stay inside this weekend, kris. it's going to be hot as well as smokey. we're not going to see much in the way of improvements in our air quality. we can barely see anything as we look out in san jose. usually we can at least see our hills in the distance. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen as we talk about how many acres have burned this year. we've set so many records, so many bad records. so we look at the size of the august complex, and it is by far the largest fire we've ever seen. this posted by cal fire. and then also the top six fires as far as how large they were have all been burning this year. so, it's really hard to see that all those records that have been falling in some of the top 20 wildfires have all happened in the past 20 years. well, let's take a look at our temperatures for today as we reach into the mid-90s. still that high fire danger that continues, and of course we know we haven't made it all t

kari? >>> it looks good and we're not seeing as much of the fog as we saw yesterday morning as you get ready to head out the door in the east bay. the morning commute is looking pretty good here and clear with our temperatures in the mid-60s and it will fall a few more degrees around sun rise and then start to warm up for another warm afternoon but we are going to bring you down a few more degrees in parts of the south bay as well as the peninsula with a high of 79 degrees expected in palo alto. oakland reaches 76 and 92, still a warm day in antioch. some future rain chances in the forecast. mike, how is it looking right now heading out the door? >>> kari, things are looking pretty good. i do have to eat some crow. we're going to show you the golden gate bridge. chp did not give a warning this morning. they did. i just clicked on the wrong entry there. they do advise as we advise there's fog at the golden gate bridge. no surprises but want to make sure we're accurate. we've circled the area

are they going to go back up, kari? >>> yeah. we had a nice, cool weekend, but now as the new workweek starts, we're back on a warming trend and so we're going to see some 90s today for parts of the east bay but mostly upper 80s with san jose reaching 85 degrees and some upper 60s for san francisco. but we're going to feel some 80s in oakland. we'll talk more about this and a look ahead to high fire danger, what i'm watching for this workweek. mike, you've been watching the commute. what's going on right now? >>> the nimitz is still the problem right now, kari. the nasty nimitz, the nickname. not because of overnight road work. northbound at 29th, things have changed. the backup built and the map shows you things over near 29th are getting easier for those speed sensors. i think we're starting to see the crews move earlier than 6:00. big rigs have been allowed for westbound 580 because of the backup and an earlier crash which bogged things down. now we see free throw month with slowing. we'll talk about that coming up. back to yo

what will we be in for this week, kari? how are we looking? >>> it looks good. it's going to be hotter and we do have quite a few concerns. it starts with our air quality. we've had some nice air quality throughout the weekend. that's about to change as we get more of a northerly wind and that will shift some of the smoke into the bay area. even though with the glass fire we have 92% containment, we are still seeing some of that smoke coming up, so it's not completely out. and so for the north bay it will be unhealthy today. we're also going to see that moving into the inland east bay and moderate air quality elsewhere. i'll be tracking this. we'll talk about a high fire danger as we head into the middle of the week. heading over to you, mike, what's the update on the traffic alert? >>> we still have the lane closures for the overnight road work going on. i think that's the majority of the slowing going on. again, as we take you out to oakland, traffic jamming up closer to high street than the last time we took a look. traffic is bogging down, though, as you're

let's get a look at the forecast from kari. good morning. >>> good morning. i have a few things i'm watching as we get started on this tuesday. we are going to have some slightly warmer weather for the inland valleys today, and we're also going to still have the high wind gusts in the north bay especially in the upper elevations giving us a high fire danger for the east bay hills as well as the santa cruz mountains. we are going to see some hot temperatures for this afternoon keeping in mind we should be in the mid-70s. we're looking at some upper 80s today with livermore and concord reaching 89. 85 in santa rosa and san francisco will reach 70 degrees. we'll talk more about that fire danger and what's ahead in the forecast. mike, how is it looking early this morning for the commute? >>> it's looking early, i guess. what that usually means is pretty much green all over the bay. let me zoom into the one spot where it's not green and this is oakland. up until about two or three minutes ago we had the northbound side slowing also heading to 29th that has cleared

what are we in for today, kari? >>> we have been monitoring that as we do have the red flag warning that's in effect, and so we are seeing the winds in some of the upper elevations picking up. as far as our surface winds, we haven't seen a lot of those gusts so far we do see a very light wind right now and for, once again, we haven't had high gusts of wind but do have cool temperatures this morning. we're at 56 degrees in santa rosa and in napa but it's a little bit warmer as you head to the south bay. take a look at our current temperature in san jose. 67 degrees. and as we go into today our highs will reach once again back into the 90s for the south bay and down to the south county where it's 98 degrees. 98 in livermore. 94 today in napa. so i'll be watching that as well as that fire danger throughout the day. mike, right now how is it looking getting out the door? >>> kari, overall things are smooth. we do have this deadly crash that happened overnight. there was a crash, a car fire closing southbound 101 what ha

kari, nice to see that sign of cooler things. >>> absolutely. i am loving this shot this morning that we have looking over san francisco. you can see the fog that's lingering over the city this morning just rolling by. it also provides some cooling as well as some higher humidity, and we need both. the visibility has been cut down to about a quarter mile in san francisco extending over to oakland and we're also seeing that happening in santa rosa as well. so watch out for that fog as you're heading out this morning for work. as we go throughout the day our temperatures are going to be nice and comfortable to start but then warming up in some of our valleys once again. here we are at noon. if you're thinking about having lunch outside in oakland it's 70 degrees. it's 77 in san jose. 79 degrees in antioch. then as we go into the afternoon spots like santa rosa in the mid-80s. san francisco will stay in the 60s. you can see how much warmer it will be as you go down the peninsula and down to cooper tite cupertino with some 90s in the east bay. then
