robin: good afternoon. i am robin givhan, senior critic at large for the washington post and welcome to washington post live. i'm delighted to have alicia garza with me today. she is one of the cofounders of the black lives matter and she is a leading voice on contemporary race issues, civil-rights, and police reform. she also launched the black futures lab, an organization that works with advocacy groups to promote policies that support black communities. her first book, "the purpose of power," was released today. alicia, thank you so much for joining me and congratulations on your book. alicia: thank you so much for having me, it is great to join you today. robin: i wanted to start with a point that you make in your book which is the importance of controlling the narrative and not allowing your story to be lost to cultural amnesia. with those things in mind, what was it that sparked the idea for you to sit down and write what is really a memoir at your ripe young age? robin. all right, thank you for the update john let's check in. >>on the traffic and take a peek at your commute around the bay area. the only major slowdown i'm tracking is on the nimitz freeway we have construction under way the usual construction, northbound at 29, but we also had a fatal crash near high street so we still have a lot of slow traffic there northbound between high street and 29th avenue, but it looks like only the right lane is closed for now, but that's going to slow you down entering downtown oakland so take 5.80 west instead of the northbound m it's freeway that help you get around the backup just getting word of a new crash northbound 6.80 at marine of this is approaching the benicia bridge before you get to the bridge new accident there blocking so a little bit of slow traffic leading up to the scene and highway for an accident still wrapping up westbound at san marco, there's a little bit of slow traffic through the scene but you're still at 14 minutes west for from antioch to concord or bridge us look good or crash in san

robin. >>all right. thank you john we're checking in on the bridge, us and some of them are a little busy starting off with 92 the trip across the san mateo bridge. it's been a little crowded since the 4 o'clock hour and now that we're in the 5 o'clock hour, it's heavier some more and more folks heading to the peninsula. but no big problems just some sluggish traffic west of the toll plaza you're averaging 12 minutes to the peninsula which is really good. no delays yet at the bay bridge toll plaza so the trip into san francisco looks easy for now. it's only 8 minutes and that's a great average from the bottom of the mace to fremont street and we remain hot spot free into san francisco. just got word of a new cross south 6.80 near 84, it's already moving off to the shoulder, but that is the commute direction. so i'm keeping an eye on this commute, 6.80 south from dublin through seminole in fremont right now you're averaging 13 minutts which is good in the crash is not blocking and the rest of the east bay

robin. >>all right, thank you john we're heading to the south bay to check in on an early morning, hot spot that is still active. it's an accident that happened shortly after 4 o'clock and it's still blocking several lanes on one oh one here it is on traffic tracker this is northbound one o one at the healthier exit so coming out of south san jose your 3 left lanes are blocked there is a big break involved one of those vehicles flipped over but it's unclear if it's the big rig that overturned so with the 3 left lanes shut down a traffic alert remains in place. the traffic is backed up just beyond the blossom hill exit. if you don't want to deal with this delay you can always cut over to 85 you can take one on one to 85 to 87 or one on one to 85 to 2.80 it depends on what's best for you and what your final destination is but you are able to squeeze by the crash in the far right lane but it's definitely slow it has bumped up the drive time to 45 minutes from san jose heading into menlo park sa
