sanjay gupta, david axelrod, julie hirschfeld davis and dr. gupta, i hear about the president being released in time for the debate. it's one thing to be released from the hospital but raring to go in prime time under these klieg lights? >> yeah, absolutely. you don't need the care necessarily that a hospital provides but it still takes time to recover from this. even with people with mild symptoms. it's definitely a step that is lost from anybody recovering from this severe illness. there's as a concern as you know from some of these long hauler symptoms. we don't know how long this is going to affect him but i think this is definitely considerations. >> julie in retrospect, we look at wednesday night in duluth we say he spoke only 45 minutes which by the way sounds funny for anyone else, 45 minutes is a long speech. for him, it's about half of what you're used to? >> right. in retrospect, there were some signs that he was not quite himself. my colleagues reported on the plane on the way home, he briefly fell asleep. that is also not typical

sanjay gupta joins us now. it's remarkable that you found 82% of the time the rate of new case jumped after president trump's visit to any specific county. did this surprise you? >> well, we knew the numbers were going up in many of these places. i think what surprised me was just how out of proportion the numbers went up in those particular areas, those particular counties, even prepare to the surrounding counties and the rest of the state. that's the thing. it's very hard to contact trace right now, jake. you have 70,000 newly infected people every day. looking at this sort of data at a hyper local level, i thought, was quite revealing, just the impact of these types of large gatherings. >> yeah and, of course, just in terms of contact tracing, we were talking months ago about all the unemployed people and wouldn't it be great if the trump administration launched a manhattan project to put people to work by doing the contact tracing that they're not doing? when the cameras pan out to these crowds at the trump

sanjay gupta is back with me now. sanjay, just in hindsight, was the debate tuesday set up in a safe enough way. they were socially distant. they were probably more than six feet. i'm not sure of the exact distance. looked 8 to 10 feet distant from each other. they were looking at each other. the president was yelling a lot and, you know, stuff was coming out of both people's mouths. was it safe? >> well, i think -- i don't think you can say it was safe. you can say that they tried to do the best job they can -- they could in setting that up in the midst of a pandemic with a very contagious virus that's circulating. it is worth pointing out that both men are considered vulnerable. my parents are in their 70s living in florida. they've been told to stay home in march. they watch this saying, we're staying at home for the last several months and two people around our age are up there in this sort of setting. i don't think you can say it was safe and now in retrospect given what has happened, the president being diagnose

sanjay gupta. sanjay, we put the maps up so people can see how bad this is and which way it's trending. we tell people record number of new cases, hospitalizations steeply on the rise, but you brought up the positivity rate in some states and that really jumps out and gives an indication of how startlingly bad the pandemic is right now in some places. >> yeah, i mean, you know, people when they hear positivity rate just so people understand this term, it's very specific and has to do with giving you a sense of if you're doing enough testing. we could show the positivity rates and some of these are the highest pos tifts rates i have

sanjay gupta, they are hiding things. a couple hours ago, for the second straight day, the doctors treating president trump walked out of walter reed medical center as a team to update reporters. someone not medically trained could come away from it believing the president is hardly sick at all. >> the patient continues to improve. he has remained without fever since friday morning. his vital signs are stable. >> today he feels well. he's been up and around. our plan today is for have him to eat and drink, to be up out of bed as mobile as possible. >> would like to reiterate how pleased we are with the president's recovery. >> he's feeling great, up and around. he could be discharged tomorrow. now, the president's doctors did say he battled a fever, his oxygen levels did fall at least two times and he did spend time being administered supplemental oxygen. a detail they danced around in yesterday's medical briefing. this is the u.s. president. we need serious and accurate information, whether it's what we are hoping to hea

sanjay gupta. i want to start with what president trump said today when asked if he could do it all over again, what he would do differently when it comeds s to handling the coronavirus pandemic. he said, "not much." what is your response? >> it's totally absurd to think ghae the best we could do is beat the did the in the world. anybody can look at the right side of the screen and as they have heard so many times if they watch your show we are not 5% of the world's population' make up nearly 25% of the world's cases. it's, obviously, a huge shortcoming here. i think what is lost sometimes in all of this, jake, when does it mean to have done something? the president often talks about the travel restrictions but that clearly wasn't enough. i want to show you some hyperlocal data. we were collecting this from arizona. remember, arizona going through the spring and just how significant the impact was over there. when they lifted stay-at-home orders, no surprise beginning in june and end of may, they h

let's bring in sanjay gupta. first of all, don't touch things. we moved past it. not so much a touch things. then you have to be around a person for a long time. we had a scenario of i would rather give someone a hug and walk on than talk to someone in a close setting for several minutes and now a period of about 15 minutes is relevant but you can get to it and not just in one contact, is that right? >> yeah. i mean that is basically it, chris. in some ways it always has been arbitrary as you are alluding to. you have 15-minute contact. what if the person sneezes after a minute. does that change anything. what if you are five or six things away. the guidance now is reflecting that. i will just show people what was close contact, within six feet for at least 15 minutes. now total of 15 or more over a 24-hour period. it better reflects what we have been told, which is you should wear a mask. this is about masks. the whole guidance is about masks saying wear a mask even if you think you will be around somebody for just a few minutes, wear a mask. >> we know masks are

sanjay gupta. >> donald j. trump. >> reporter: for president trump's supporters, these rallies have come to represent a show of force against fear. >> it's a 99.9% survival rate, and i am going to continue to live my life. i hope everybody else does too. >> reporter: for a lot of public health experts, too, these rallies also have the elements of a contagion, few masks, lots of people, closely clustered together for more than 15 minutes at a time. you can't see the virus, but what is happening during a super spreading event? >> it's a very rough analogy but if you think of a camp fire and you have just a gentle breeze, not everybody sitting around that camp fire is equal in regards to the amount of virus or smoel they're getting this their face. >> reporter: outdoors can be up to 20 to 30 times safer than indoors, the virus just more likely to disburse into the air but it is still not completely safe. again, think of that campfire smoke. it drifts and lingers and then travels wherever the wind may carry it. but

sanjay gupta. let me start with you, john. today, the president's physician, he was vague about the president's condition. he dodged ai lot of questions on whether he actually received -- the president received -- supplemental oxygen. give us the latest because we're getting a lot of confusing answers from the president as opposed to the white house chief of staff? >> wolf, we had a master class in bad communications from the white house today because they belatedly, after an extended period, which we did not get any official briefing from the white house, they sent out the president's doctor and other doctors who had been treating the president here at walter reed and gave an extremely evasive news conference at which sean conley, the doctor, wouldn't say how high the president's fever had been, wouldn't specify whether he had ever gotten supplemental oxygen. we've subsequently confirmed that he has got supplemental oxygen. would i not say whether they had detected lung damage in the president. we're monitoring that closely.

sanjay gupta is with us. when you saw the president, you understand these things, what did his look suggest to you? could we make any determination as to his state when we saw him walking out there? >> i think it would be hard to speculate too much. obviously he was walking on his own. he seemed to not have any difficulty with that or going up the stairs or anything. he was wearing a mask which is mandatory especially now that he has the virus. but there is nothing particularly concerning when he boards the helicopter there. i wouldn't have expected that either. even with moderate symptoms, fever, not feeling well, fatigued, whatever it may be, it would still fit with that. it was the level of concern that prompted this. the helicopter flight over to the hospital. hopefully, as you have asked -- and hopefully we will get more details about what prompted that specifically, but we know he is going there and is expected to stay there. there are clues that there is a level of concern that changed throughout the d

sanjay gupta joins me again. sanjay, first of all, what i got from that press conference, such as it was, was that commander conley was wanting to share information that he thought reflected well on the president's health and refused to give any information that he thought would reflect poorly. when confronts about his condition, how would he be safely esconced, quarantined, the doctor said he wouldn't go into that. he wouldn't go into specifics about what he is or is not on. are you confident that the president should be discharged? >> i don't think we have the information here about the basic things. does the president have pneumonia? don't have an answer to that. the president needed oxygen. how significant was the impact on his lungs? don't know the answer to that. we know he's going to continue to get these medications as well as remdesivir. i get it that there is a medical unit in the hospital, but that's why he went to walter reed in the first place, to receive the drugs. why the change here? if he's on bl

sanjay gupta, cnn's chief medical correspondent joins us now. sanjay, your thoughts. >> well, this won't surprise you, but i think from a medical perspective obviously a virtual debate would be the best, safest option medically and that was even before the president was diagnosed with coronavirus. so, you know, it's interesting because the sort of policies around these debates went from being a very porous sort of policy, you can be tested, just show your test within 72 hours, any kind of test you want, people inside, audience, not even necessarily masked during the first debate, that was sort of what we saw, to now virtual. i'm sure as you point out that this has a lot to do with the fact that the president has been diagnosed with covid, but, you know, we are in the middle of a pandemic here, so it's funny, we talk about these issues all the time and, you know, part of me is saying we're clearly just trying to make the best out of a bad situation, it feels very incremental. we will test, we will sort of require masks. none of this stuff really

sanjay gupta join me now. thank you very much. on the don't make yourself sick to make a point score, sanjay, what do we know about the people who are going to these rallies for the president? he said nobody gets sick. we've never had a problem. he said that in the debate. is it true? >> well, no. i mean we do have some clear evidence that there have been people who have become infected as a result of these rallies, cause and effect, which is hard to do when you have over 80,000 people becoming infected every day. just too many people. i mean it would be a whole sector of our society to do -- >> how do you know? >> we decided to look at these counties. 17 rallies in these counties and basically looked at what happened in the four weeks before and the four weeks after these rallies, and then compare it, chris, to the counties around those counties in the same state. not surprising the numbers going up everywhere. what we found is 82% of the time cases went up in the county right after the president's visit, within a few weeks after

sanjay gupta with us. very interesting. there seems to be a discrepancy on the timeline. the doctor saying within 72 hours but it was, what, yesterday, 1:00 a.m. when the world learned about the president's testing positive for covid-19. so what did you hear there? what struck you as interesting? dr. conley underscoring the president is not on oxygen now but then also said not yesterday and that he's doing exceptionally well. >> yeah, fred, it was almost more about what he wouldn't answer versus what he did, right? the timeline struck me as well. he said it's been 72 hours since his diagnosis. here we are saturday morning. 73 days ago, is that when the diagnosis was? as you point out, we didn't hear about it until 1:00 in the morning on -- i'm getting my days mixed up as well, but that doesn't jive with what we've heard. >> the audio was funny there. go ahead. >> the oxygen thing was really relevant. this is not a small point. and the reporters who were asking the question followed up several times. was he on supplemental oxygen or not at any time? and for some crazy evas

sanjay gupta and infectious disease specialist dr. selene gounder on the air with us last night when this began to break. the white house says the president was taken out of an abun dendance of caution. given what we know about his medical condition and frankly, there is a lot as we point out we do not know because the white house is not allowing the doctors to be speaking and be interviewed by reporters, how concerning is this in terms of the president's health? >> well, i think it can be a component of both, an abundance after caution but a heightened level of concern. i've been reporting on this since 1:00 in the morning hearing the various statements from the white house, talking to sources at first it was that he's doing well and then it was minor symptoms and then it was the fever and then you heard it was more moderate symptoms. this experimental therapy that he got. these are all sort of signals. this is having covered this story for so many months now, this is the way we get this type of information in these little bread crum

sanjay gupta back with us now. sanjay, so many people waking up to this morning, obviously. i'm putting you a little bit on the spot here, my friend, but i know you can take it. as we think about how all of the top health officials in this country are either waking up to it or perhaps woken with a phone call in the middle of the night, over the last several months, as you have been in touch with people at these top agencies and on the coronavirus task force, was there ever a discussion to your knowledge of what the plan was if the president were to test positive and how that would be handled? do you know if that came up? >> i don't know for certain, erica. i would imagine that it did, as part of national security discussions, even. i don't know if it specifically came up with the coronavirus task force. they're not -- they're advising the country. they're not his medical doctors, necessarily, although i'm sure there's a lot of overlap there, to your question. but it is -- just as you say, there are -- i know that members of the coronavirus task force are waking up, they're p

sanjay gupta and dane a bas >> let's talk about wisconsin first. that is democrats are scrambling to make sure that every single potential voter who is mailing in an absentee ballot has to do it by today. that is the assumption that they have to get in the mailbox by october 27th to get it counted by election day as the supreme court ruled. whether or not this is going to be make a difference and leave a lot of absentee ballots not usable is an open question. more importantly it is an open question whether or not it is going to be a tight enough race for any of that to make a difference. it certainly was four years ago. the president won by like 20,000 votes, barely. i think, more importantly, the question is what it means for the election more broadly and when we get to election day, whether or not the supreme court is going to get involved in challenges to results across the battleground states and some of the writings from president's appointed justices, cav a gnaw and gorsuch say they are being -- kavanaugh says he thinks it makes the political
