institutions to belong to south carolina. so moving these trips were they were opposed to. but anderson didn't think he could hold fort moultrie because it was close to the mainland, and houses around the fort, southerners should be able to fire into his meant. he did -- his men. he didn't think he could hold that position. now, this is an image of them raising the american flag inside for center. it's very interesting because it gives you a glimpse of the inside of fort sumter. fort sumter started in 1829 and was still under construction when anderson moved his men there in december of 1860. they're still working on it 30 years after they started it. as you can see inside the fort, it was almost 90% complete. you can see there are imposing walls, 50 feet high. there were three tiers of artillery placements. the fort was pretty massive for that time. originally, it was built to hold over 600 men. anderson doesn't have that many. he's not going to be able to use all the canons. it was built to hold 135 canons and there were on

i will never lie to the people of south carolina. and that's why this movement has grown so much here in south carolina. and people trust me. they don't trust lindsey graham. >> well, what do you do when someone's lies hurt you? senator graham has tried repeatedly to tie you to far more progressive members of your party. how do you cut through that noise in a state that president trump won by nearly 15 points? >> you know, my message to the people of south carolina from day one of this campaign, stephanie, was, this is not about democrats versus republicans or progressives versus conservatives. it's about doing what is right versus what is wrong. when a rural hospital closes here in south carolina, people do not care whether or not it's a liberal or conservative way to keep their hospital open. because if your hospital closes and it takes you instead of ten minutes to go to hospital, 15, it takes you 25 or 35 or 45 minutes, that's a death sentence. and nobody cares about politics at that point in time. but lindsey graham has failed t

why do you think now it's a different south carolina or it's the same south carolina, but it's a different situation for someone running against graham? >> well, stephen, i think partly because lindsey graham is different. you know, it's almost-- watching him is like watching a live version of "invasion of the body snatch erdz." who knows who this guy is. the lindsey graham 1.0 is someone we used to like and respect and you thought at the end of the day, he could do what was in the best interest of the people of south carolina. this new guy is only focused on himself. he's only focused on his own political power and political relevance. and the folks in south carolina are hungry for somebody that's going to work on behalf of them and their families and their communities. and we are building up a campaign here in south carolina like we haven't seen in a very long time. and it's a campaign built on hope, making sure that the american dream is alive and well for so many. you know, i've lived the american dream. i grew up in a mobile home, son of a teen mom, raised by grandparents with a fourt

south carolina, the bottom line, when you see polls like that, south carolina is emerging as a key part of that story of the battle for senate control. >> steve, really quickly, i don't know if you know the answer but i'll still ask the question. the senate race in south carolina, is it that mirroring the presidential race? is president trump in trouble in south carolina at all? >> let's see some more polling. if you look at this particular poll yesterday, the presidential race looks a lot like the senate race. however, that's different from the other polling we've been seeing. the other polling we've been seeing has had donald trump continuing to lead in south carolina by six points, eight points, somewhere in that range. trump over 50%. we've seen polling that's been showing trump outpacing lindsey graham. trump positioned potentially to win south carolina. graham in a real fight. this new poll again is not showing a difference between those two. i think that's where i want to say stay tuned, let's see if that's something that's picked up in other polls or if you continue to get that

even when you look at north carolina, south carolina and georgia, african-american voters have been overperforming. and so as we're out in the community talking to people, you know, i think what trump attempted to do in terms of this voter suppression in fact, i think it's backfiring on the republican party. it's become a lightning rod for black voters who have been determined to get out and vote. and so we're seeing record breaking numbers in early voting right now. >> we're going to have after you jaime harris and john n ossoff. what does jon ossoff have to do in the closing days to win that race and what does jaime harrison have to do in south carolina to win that race? >> i think they have to continue to get people to vote early and solidify the base. we're seeing african-american voters actually overperform, outperform their counterparts. we continue to need to drive home the message, we need to make an investment of those coming out. we need to see a higher turnout, make an investment. we need to see more radio, a message being able to affirm that what is happening is that people are coming

now, notice that calhoun is from the south. south carolina. so the most southern of the southern states. and from the standpoint of those looking ahead and knowing that there is tension between north and south, it's south carolina where the tension always starts. south carolina, of course, is the first to secede. daniel webster from the north. originally from new hampshire. when he was trying to expand his law practice, he moved to boston. so he is a member of congress, a senator, who is claimed by both new hampshire and massachusetts. but he is the spokesman of new england, which is sort of the most northern part of the north. henry clay is from kentucky. kentucky was considered the west at the time. so we've got this regional arrangement among the three. and because, i said, these threesomes are kind of unstable. one of the striking parts of the story is the alliances, the shifting alliances among the three. because at any given time two are lined up against the other and which two it is depends on the time, depends on the issue. at the same

here is what we decided to do here in south carolina. we decided that those november -- although november 30 election day, that we were going to make october election month. we started yesterday, what we call absentee voting early, here in south carolina. and this year, rather than the 17 reasons you had to give in order to vote early, the legislature decided, because of covid-19, everybody can vote absentee starting october 5, irrespective of your reasons. so, we are organized what we call precinct by precinct churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, asking fraternities, sorority, groups, fraternal orders, to stop now adopting precincts. -- start adopting precincts. many of them started 30 days ago and we're going precinct by precinct, trying to get people to vote absentee in person because we know that the mail cannot be trusted, especially in rural communities where they're now running very short because of what this administration has done. they are trying to suppress the vote and i think they've been very successful in the past. we a
