and to anyone celebrating, happy diwali. we're back with the late news at ten. now on bbc one it's time for the news where you are. hello. no rest for the weather this weekend — more spells of rain swinging their way across the atlantic, pushed through on strong and gusty winds. every now and then, between the spells of rain, perhaps the odd glimmer of brightness. but unfortunately, no really sustained spells of dry and sunny weather, i'm afraid. the reason for this is this big area of low pressure that will stay with us throughout the next 48 hours, feeding in weatherfronts and clusters of showers. through the remainder of the afternoon, as the centre of the low rolls across ireland, particularly strong winds on irish sea coasts. high spring tides as well bring the risk of coastal flooding here. further rain pushing into the south—east of england, another band stretching its way from the west all the way across england and wales. we'll see wetter weather getting into southern scotland and a wet start to the evening in northern ireland. the numbers in black

diwali is one of the most celebrated times of the year for hindus, sikhs and jains. oh, nice! but this year, the coronavirus means that things will be quieter, with families making do with festivities from home. and for some, they may not even be celebrating at all. mum was all about family. that's something piral raja from bolton knows all too well. the cruel reality of the virus has disproportionally affected families like hers. # happy birthday to you.# her mum died just two weeks ago after contracting the virus in the second wave.

right now people celebrating diwali are also unable to meet their families. but there is a sense that hopefully these things would be over by christmas. boris johnson had said that, and even with this lockdown we are hoping that if we went into lockdown now, we could save christmas. so there will be repercussions for mental health, isolation. this isn'tjust a nice thing to do, a lot of people haven't been able to hug someone all year. and the idea that christmas they won't be able to see their family again is really troubling and deeply upsetting, it's been a very difficult year for people. and it's worth saying as well that the stage committee have been clear that the tears haven't worked, and going into these tears that are less stringent doesn't really help to block the infection from spreading. and if we don't want to have a third wave in january, we cannot just don't want to have a third wave in january, we cannotjust open up and act like things are normal for christmas. let's go to the front page of the daily mail, if we could michael. we will show this

very, very happy diwali to you both. let's take a look at the weather now. i weather this weekend is dominated by an area of low pressure which means it is going to be wet and windy at times. that has been the story so far today because of these weather fronts that are sweeping in from the west. they are pushing their way steadily north and east. the best of any dry and bright weather today will be into the north—east of scotland but as we go through the latter stages of the afternoon, we will see bands of showery rain spilling their way across the country. have bursts moving through the south—east to be replaced by yet another. perhaps late afternoon brightness in the south—west and parts of northern ireland. when they across the day today. gusts in excess of a0 mph, perhaps close to 50 or 55 miles per. in the south—west. it is mild. ii to 15 degrees weather across the country. it looks like we will continue to see this unsettled story into a sunday, but sunday will be more of a case of scattered sharp showers. and are still windy with it, particula
