jonathan: it's a wonderful thing. the first vaccination taking place in the united kingdom, and the first step in a massive effort that is about to take place in the months to come not just in the u.k., but potentially in the united states as well. this headline crossing the bloomberg in the last five minutes or so from a report from the fda that will be used for the advisory meeting taking place in today's. the vaccine was found -- in two days. the vaccine was found to be safe. so we have the recommendation for approval in the u.k.. the vaccinations have started. we are hoping the same thing will happen in the united states this thursday. tom: there is the hope. it is not buy the rumor, sell the news. it is buy the hope. what do you see in the market zeitgeist about it is here, then what? jonathan: doubling down on the story of last month and extrapolating it out 12 months. that seems to be the consensus view. the rotation, the cyclical story, the economy reopening. we are out to q2. that's how long this is going to

jonathan: look at the now. we can do that with donald mullen, pretea yum -- pretea yum -- pretium c.e.o. the risk of the w. how big is that risk? donald: we think the w risk is quite real. without -- we'll be in a position certainly that the increase in the amount of mortgage defaults that are likely to take place and credit defaults will be quite real of -- real. while consensus numbers on corporate credit defaults, for example, have a broad range between 3% and 8%. our expectation is that we will get some sort of cares package, but still in a 4% to 5% default growth. lisa: without that cares package, and just looking at the reality of now, does it make sense to you that last month was the best month for the lowest rated junk bonds going back to 2016 as we saw record numbers of hospitalizations and people increasing number of people filing for jobless claims? donald: we talk about the financial market has an indicator of the economy, we have to also rather that it's also an indicator of global liquidity. the v

jonathan: we all hope it makes sense in the end. we spent 10 years debating whether it made sense a decade ago. priya misra, thank you. high yield spreads yesterday, tight. 385. the tightest of the year, 315. the absolute level, and lisa will speak to this, we haven't seen these kind of numbers before and many places worldwide. tom: lisa, this is your wheelhouse. this is artificial, to say the least. lisa: artificial because of why? it is because people have confidence in the economy, or they believe in a backstop from the federal reserve. if you look at all yields, 4.5%. that is a new record low. that is basically what you are getting an investment grade bonds a couple of years ago. it raises the question, what does that mean for returns? they've got to go lower, but you are not getting compensated if some of these companies go belly up. and yet, what are the other options? where else do people go? jonathan: i think that is the ultimate problem, that investment grade has become the new risk-free asset for some people. high yield ha

jonathan: it took you two minutes. for our audience, this is what is going to happen during the news conference with the federal reserve. about halfway through, tom keene is going to sit on the other screen watching spurs versus liverpool. [laughter] screening thewo- news conference and not listening. lisa, when you engage with the content a little bit later after that news conference, when tom pontificates everything chair powell has just said, just assume he did not pay attention during the whole of the back half. jonathan: let's build on that. the experience that many people have with janet yellen is former fed chair janet yellen. successful news conference by definition is a dry one where you don't make headlines. many people might look at that and say this isn't someone that can negotiate with congress and get things done. do you disagree with that? joe: i do in the sense that janet does have experience at the c.e.a., so she has worked in a political environment. now obviously if you could find a policymaker who had an academic background and had served at the federal reserve, an elected official with all that experience, that might be a little better. let's be realistic. she'll be working with a president who formerly served in the senate, a vice president who formerly served in the senate. and a legislative affairs team to be sure. i think she brings the pieces of the puzzle to the table that will be needed to put it together. lisa: if you could have the best people in the whole world, you got political gridlock and inc

jonathan: 1.25% on the 10 year. the idea of this reflationary narrative doesn't evolve, that is your view. when it comes to risk assets, you are perfectly aligned with the crowd. why? jim: because i think there's a shortage of securities, for one. there's a lot of liquidity in the marketplace and not enough securities. corporate supply next year is probably going to be lower in terms of net issuance by about -$500 billion, so next year we may expect around $1.3 trillion. and 1.3llion this year trillion dollars next year. the fed is doing qe and continues to buy $80 billion per month. maybe even extend securities next week. the point here is there is a lot of money which, by design, is out there to flood the markets. there's just not enough securities. there is going to be demand for yield. yes, it is a little bit counter consensus, but the point here is fiscal policy and monetary policy together will actually stabilize the markets quite a bit and keep interest rates relatively low. i think rates rise a little bit, b

jonathan: we are so lucky to catch up with you today. please come back, even if that was a depressing end to this conversation. leslie mcclure of drexel university. 12 months is not the number of people are thinking about. tom: nobody wants to hear that. dr. fauci, with respect to her academics, would tilt towards her and say let's get to actual adults talking about the efficacy of distributing the vaccine. the answer is we do not know. there are a lot of mysteries right now. jonathan: you have to factor in something else -- the people who will make the call -- it will be the scientists who give the advice, the politicians will make the call, and they will have to weigh civil liberties as well and factor in everything in this decision, which is why a lot of people think of the pressure will be so great. are once the most at risk vaccinated, the pressure to remove restrictions, regardless from advice from scientists and health care professionals, will be so great. tom: i would look to businesses to provide constraints, including airlines.

jonathan: absolutely. it just doesn't feature in the 2021 outlooks that i have read, you have read, that any of us have read. jason has one of them. i guess a question for many of us over the last few weeks or so is what would it take to really given how ittite has been over the last month? >> it's news of the vaccine being sort of rolled out, leading to either herd immunity or a clear abatement of pandemic by next year. that's the consensus view, i guess, and what everything is bullish on for next year. if we find out in the next month or two it doesn't happen in the timeline expected, that's the one thing that could really disappoint markets and on the policy front we have always learned the politicians can just move the deadline we have talked about before. that would be most disappointing to the markets at this point in time. jonathan: also as we know from experience over the years, nothing changes the narrative quicker than price. the breakout in 10 year treasury yields, we have been asking that quest

jonathan: what a substantial progress. could you picture that meeting that goes through the statement? they have a conversation afterwards and you know what the first question is going to be, they will ask you what substantial progress toward your goal. do you have an answer? goes into the news conference it is the first question and what does he say? it means exactly what it says. right now it it is not a problem. in six months time it might define what it says for him. tom: i have been asking everybody. as you know you will get a straight answer from david rosenberg. theust told us here canadian finance minister yesterday or the day before finally started talking about the bottom line is you will hear this from every single leader from beijing around the world about this weak dollar. we are there right now. cable 136, that is broad-based. lisa: are we actually going to bottom out? i will say to your conversation, the first thing they will ask you. he did his job even though he disappointed market expectations coming out

jonathan: dan, great to catch up, sir. same thing.ing the at what point do you sit around a table over zoom or whatever and start saying, everyone is saying the same thing? it doesn't mean it is wrong. i just wonder where the edges going to be. everyone is overweight em, value, cyclicals over defensive come a weaker dollar, treasury yields limited in their little break outcome of that has been the story repeatedly over the last few weeks. tom: you have just defined a bull market, where there is a rationalization each step of the way. frankly, bear markets are the same way. but in the heart of a major bull market, this is what you get into. the one thing i would say that is underestimated here is corporations will adapt and adjust to the facts they are handed. you see that with 3m cost reductions today 3% of employment. that has been widely anticipated. what took so long? there will be many more 3m-like announcements. jonathan: that is not the kind of decision you make when we are at the top. that's what people would say. y
