joining me now is senior national correspondent steve kornacki. two important races still uncalled. what's the latest on these two and what do the outcomes mean? >> the make-up of the house, ayman, we talk so much about the presidential race. this was a big story that emerged, a surprise story. democrats had 233 seats in the house. all talk was that democrats would expand that in the election. would they get to 245 or 250? the democrats lost seats. the question is how many are they going to lose? right now the democrats have 222, the republicans 209. what you're talking about is four uncalled races right now. four races remain to be decided when it comes to control of the u.s. house. remember, right now it's 222 to 209. the first is a formality. this is a run-off in louisiana in a very republican district. two republicans qualified for the run-off. this will be a republican victory. here's another uncalled race, california, 25th district. mike garcia the republican trying to hang on to his seat. he won that earlier this year. a lead of several hundred votes for him. then you mention

i want to go to nbc's steve kornacki at the big board. aside from the fact we learned people love your gap khakis, kornacki, what else did we learn this year? >> ah, well, let's -- yeah. i didn't expect that with the pants either myself, but let's talk about the election this year. what did we learn from the election of 2020? a couple things jump out to me. you mentioned number one. i don't even know the right adjective to describe this but the interest level in politics, interest level in elections among people in this country is at an astonishing high. the turnout number for the five previous presidential elections before this year. you see barely over 100 million back in 2000. population is growing in this time. so it's going um somewhat. you see it hit 136 million in 2016. then the trump era begins. he gets elected. we have four years of just political combat and look at this. nearly 160 million people cast votes this year. i mean look at that jump. nearly 25 million from the last election. >> geez. >> nots just a growing population.

they fix kornacki's board, so he's here. what does data tell us, steve? >> it's interesting, that target there, you get maybe 70, 75% of the people saying they'll do it. this is the most recent data we have on 60%. it's a majority but you're not quite at that level that folks like anthony fauci say we need to be at but 60% said they definitely would probably get it if they could today. 40% said they wouldn't that's also an increase. if you looked a couple months ago, start of the fall, it was barely 60% who said they would definitely get it. although, back in the early days of this pandemic, back in may, 72% back then said they would definitely or probably get it. you were just talking about one of the things maybe giving people a pause here, even those who say they want to get it, would they be comfortable to be among the first to get it. only 7% say they would like to be among the first to do it. a lot of people saying in the polling they would like to see other people go first, then they would warm up to it. >> not me, i'll go first what about ages? ar

and that means we brought back correspondent steve kornacki. where are we? and why are we here? why is this an event in this year? >> yeah, i mean so the basic heres, when you go out and you vote on election day, you vote for biden, you vote for trump or whoever you vote for but then you're setting off a process, the electoral college process and it is about a month after the election that the slates of electors, that is what you are choosing on election day, a slate of electors, if you voted for biden, you're choosing his late of electors. that is what happens across the country, the state electors chosen through this election on election day, they meet and they formally cast their votes. this is the electoral college and so again what you saw put in place on election day was 306 electoral votes for biden and 232 for trump. and that is ratified and watching it play out. it is almost complete at this hour. right now they've had a number of the meetings in states across the country. the states colors in here are the state where's the eelectors have met and biden is up at 240 and

steve kornacki steve, what is the turnout number from november tell us about the runoffs. >> you know, shep, it's really interesting here take a look. we start with the presidential race in georgia just because biden showed a democrat could under the right circumstances for them actually wing the state but now compare what happened to that senate race that was basically a one-on-one, the perdue/ossoff race going into the runoff there's a difference ossoff came in second even as joe biden was winning it at the top of the ticket 88,000 behind perdue biden winning by almost 12,000 vote, a swing of about 100,000 votes. the challenge for democrats particularly in this region here, the deep blue region in metro atlanta basically in a lot of these counties ossoff won them all, biden won them all but ossoff didn't win them by as much as joe biden won them so the challenge for democrats in these runoffs whether it's the ossoff seat -- the perdue seat, i should say or the open seat there, the challenge for democrats is to try to get to biden levels of turnout and support in the atlanta metro ar

let's bring in nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki at the big board. and also with us, tia mitchell, from the atlanta journal constitution. what is the state of play in georgia right now, steve? >> you set the stakes pretty well. democrats got to go two for two. in these senate runoffs f. they do that, they could controll the senate. they do have a blueprint to win in georgia. joe biden won the state of georgia in november. over donald trump. first democrat to carry the state in a presidential election since way back in 1992. now biden did this very narrowly and important to remember his margin there was less than 12,000 votes over donald trump. that was two tenths of one point. so biden ended up on top. but very, very little wiggle room there. and i mentioned that because if the good news for democrats is they have a blueprint for biden an the bad news is the senate candidates did not file that blue print in november. so let's compare guide biden an trump versus osoff and perdue. let's compare the biden trump to that. biden wins by a little under 12,0

joining me right now, steve kornacki. steve, what are the key areas we should be focusing on in the last week? >> yeah. really interesting here. it sound like the november election all over again. right? record interests. could be record turnout. joe biden won georgia. statewide. he beat donald trump in the state by just under 12,000 votes. in a way what joe biden did was create the blueprint that the two democratic senate candidates want to follow in the runoff next week. here's the challenge for the democratic senate candidates. compare what happened in the presidential race in georgia in november to the race between david perdue and jon ossoff. this is a runoff because nobody at 50%. biden finished on top in the presidential race by about 12,000, but it was david perdue who got more votes in the preliminary than ossoff. 88,000 more votes. there was a difference here between the races. results tracked very similarly statewide c but not entirely simil similarly. where was it that joe biden was doing well enough to win st
