meteorologist kari hall is here. kari, what's the timeline for that next rounding of rain? >> well, we are still looking at some scattered showers and it's just going to hang out with us for quite a while. this atmospheric river moving in as for the most part for now pushed to the south. so we're looking at still some scattered rain. we're tracking it on stormranger. while some of us are taking a break we can see it moving through morgan hill as well as just to the north in parts of the north bay, richmond over toward fairfield, vallejo getting in on some rain that's moving into concord. so it's going to be off and on today, still with some active weather, but we can see all of the rain that's still to the north of us and even the possibility of some storms as the heavy snow continues to fall in the sierra. but let me show you how much rain we've measured already if you're wondering about the possibility of mudslides and the concerns they have had there. definitely valid as we've seen over 3 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains. and then for napa, up around lake curry

meteorologist kari hall is going to time it out for us. kari? >> yes, we're starting out with some light rain, now moving into the east bay, down the peninsula and into the south bay. as we track t we are seeing the initial wave of light rain coming in but it will get heavier today once the next round of rain arrives. we may see a few thunderstorms as we go through the time line, a couple of isolated storms popping up along the coastline, at about 8:30 and as we go later into the morning, we'll see a li the nbc bay area app so that you can get a as the rain and possibly storms approach your location. >>> mike, getting out the door heading to work. how is it looking for the commute? >> kari, over my shoulder, folks could see some of the blurry shots we have, water on the lens, specifically that san mateo bridge we showed earlier. i want to show it again because you'll notice not just water on the lens but the refraction of those lights. there's some kind of crew there trying to address some has are in the middle, maybe some debris. looks like tra

good morning, kari. >>> good morning. we're going to see most of the rain during the early hours especially for the north bay. it's already falling. but areas south are not seeing much of that wet weather right now. so if you're getting ready to head out the door and you're in the east bay expect spotty, light rain. some of the heavier rain staying to the north. as we go through this forecast we'll be tracking the showers today along with some high winds. some of those gusts may reach over 40 miles per hour especially in the north bay, but we're going to see more waves of rain as we go through the forecast this week. looking at the time line once again most of that heavy rain moving through the north bay and pushing to the south right before lunch time. so i'll talk more about what to expect coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for most of those dry roads for areas south of san francisco? >>> well, it's still monday morning, the first of the year. folks are managing okay, kari, i think. the conditions are h

kari, lovely weekend. laura was seeing dangerous conditions out there. >> yes, so we're getting ready for a prolonged wind event and those winds are already starting to pick up, and it may cause some damage across the bay area, so we're looking at these extremely high winds, very dry conditions, as well as a fire danger as we approach some near record highs again for today. so right now is the time to make sure you're prepared for all of these high winds we're looking at, make sure you have your flashlights, your cell phones charged up, lots of batteries, food and water for the possibility of a few days as well as securing those outdoor items, we may have downed trees under these conditions. a lot to watch for and of course we'll have an eye on that. let's get a look at how it looks for the morning commute if you are working today on this martin luther king jr. day, we are going to see overall some clear roads across the bay area,eport that was off of mountain house road as well as byron, in that area. we

let's check in with kari. good morning, kari. >> good morning. we are starting out with clouds across the bay area and some rain just to the north of us. but, unfortunately, most of us will see this rain and, at most in the north bay we're looking at a few spotty sprinkles. still some unsettled weather. while the tri-valley is all dry, we start out with clear visibility. it looks like you'll join a lot of company. those temperatures starting out in the low 40s. lot of clouds throughout the morning. we will get some peeks of sunshine in the upper 50s to lower 60s. that incoming storm, even though we're not getting any rain, will kick up high waves. we'll talk about king tides and the high surf advisory in a few minutes. laura? >> sounds good. we'll check back with you, kari. >>> 4:31. following last week's siege, a live look in washington, d.c. this morning. house democrats look to impeach the president for a second time. the president will be in texas, highlighting work on the border wall. several officers have been suspended, pending the outcome

nice, kari. good weather? >>> yes, we are going to have a very nice weekend, and we'll probably all just need to get outside and just breathe because we are going to see some sunshine and more comfortable temperatures. we're getting the rain in right now with storm ranger tracking it all. we are seeing some of the spotty showers moving through. but it's not a lot of it and some of the more heavy rain showers that we've seen out of this system moving through parts of the north bay as we are looking at the loop of what happened with this storm system moving in. we can see those showers mainly over the north bay continuing to move on through, but looking at the rainfall totals, well, we've seen the rainfall making it up to about a tenth of an inch which is about what we're expecting. hopefully a few spots made more of that rain especially in the upper elevations. notice all the zeros over to the tri-valley, the south bay and down to the peninsula. as we take a live look in duplin, yodupliouble play dublin, some l

more storms comingur way, kari? >> yes. you know, we've all been talking about how the snow has been falling in the sierra. it made national headlines. look at this video. if we're having a hard time imagining how deep that snow is, imagine what it's like for your pets trying to just go out for s and something that will help pick you up on this friday morning. let's get a look at the radar right now. as we are still seeing that snow coming down around mammoth lakes, elsewhere across the sierra, and we are going to also have some more of this rain, i guess the rain is not that fun to play in, is it? that's what we're still seeing right now as we head out the door but take a look at how much rain we've measured since this storm began. i mean, this is pretty unbelievable. over 10 inches. it's approaching 11 inches in parts of the santa cruz mountains. and morgan hill also h totals so it wasn't rain shadowed that san francisco to y over 2 inches of rain ans elmo measuring 3 inches there but mostly 1 to 2, even 3 inches of rain

i made it from the car to the door, i was so happy, kari. >> yeah. and we're going to have some of those times where it's raining hard and then stops and not all of us in the bay area are hearing that rain hitting the roof right now. it's mainly south of san francisco over towards the east bay and really hitting the south bay at this point. this is a typical atmospheric storm setup where there's a huge case of the haves and have nots as the south bay has it and we will see the heavy rain continuing to move through and stalled out over some of the same areas. you can see the bright reds from freemont towards sunnyvale and lighter towards east palo alto. as we move towards the east bay it's lighter in antioch and discovery bay. a look at our microclimates and talk about more rain in the forecast. mike, a lot of wet roads for this morning commute. >> that's right, kari. i borrowed the data that we share interest your commute and put it on my maps and showing folks to get an idea of how the rain really hammering the south bay with those brighter colors.

let's check in with kari and mike. both of you talking about the fog this morning. >>> visibility is low down to a quarter of a mile. we've seen the rain, now that moisture left on the ground condensing into the dense fog that we're seeing. visibility at a quarter of a mile. we've seen some of the fog rolling through the tri-valley. this is a look at the current view where it's improved here and we're still going to be in with the fog, maybe mist and drizzle. notice late morning it's going to start to clear out and that's what we're going to see for much our bay area microclimates. we're looking at highs that will reach into the upper 50s as we get peeks of sunshine. rain in the forecast for tomorrow. mike, how is it looking now for the commute? >>> it's looking great as far as the speeds go. the warning you gave i extended because of those conditions. the fog registering on the map behind me we show you for the north bay that is an issue there as you travel along the 101. petaluma down through novato, out of vallejo.

i'll call out the big ones and this radar that kari has. more rain coming into the south bay for sure. back to you. >> all right. thank you, mike. >>> new this morning, major flooding in monterey county stalled cars on 101 that will make the traffic report. video between salinas and gonzalez. the cars stalled in high water both directions were shut down because of flooding. the chp tells us south bay 101 has reopened. >>> and the slide danger is have he real this morning. bay area based emergency responders are in monterey county helping with all of this. this is a mudslide in a burn zone that damaged homes and buildings there. the drama played out in south salinas. two people were injured as they tried to escape the wall of mud. dozens of horses had to be rescued and two dozen homes and barns were damaged road. firefighters went late into the night sandbagging to try to divert the water from the home of the path of a slide and the property owner says he dug a trench which he thinks helped avoid the worse of it. >> i don't know if it saved

kari has numbers of a different sort. the temperatures today. how are we looking, kari? >> yeah. looks pretty good. i think, mike, that will be a great birthday present for you. i'll work on that, making sure you win the lottery today. let's check out what's going on with our forecast. we're seeing some light showers moving into parts of the north bay. we're tracking it on storm ranger. this is all part of a bigger storm system that's keeping some of that rain well to the north of us. we're just seeing a little bit of it moving into parts of the north bay. but the much more heavier rain or measurable rain is moving through far northern california. it's still churning up some big waves today. so we're dealing with those big breakers and also some dangerous waves today along the coastline. some of those waves may reach over 25 feet. and we have those long period swells. that means that the water can draw you well out to sea before that next wave comes in. that could bring you back close to shore. and we have rip currents possible as well. those sneaker waves have caught a lot of pe

kari is back this morning. some rain overnight. >>> we have some great news in the weather department, some rain but it's not coming along with some bad weather. we need the soaking rains coming in every few days and that's exactly what we have this week. let's get a look at storm ranger. we have it parked on san bruno mountain and it is showing that rain moving through mill valley, parts of marin county moving into the east bay. we have a lot more where that came from. as we go into late this morning into the afternoon this rain will be pushing from north to south with some of the heaviest rain in the north bay. i wanted to widen out and show you the connection of this subtropical moisture that's rolling through into the bay area but most of it mostly in the north bay. the rest of the bay area at least getting some of that moisture and the rain. it's coming along with some high winds. i wanted to stop the time line here at 12:30. take a look at these wind speeds and miles per hour. we can see some of the winds

good morning, kari. >> good morning. we saw some of the heavier rain moving through during the overnight hours and now we're left with lingering light scattered showers that we're seeing still left on stormranger, our multiple doppler radar. we're still getting a pretty steady downpower just south of san jose through morgan hill and just north of gilroy, so expect the roads to be wet on 101 if you're about to head out for work. we're also seeing the scattered rain over parts of the east bay and it's going to continue with the waves of rain that we could see coming throughout the morning into the afternoon. much of the north bay still covered with scattered light rain so we're going to see more of this activity throughout the day. we are not done with this system, even though some of the heavier rain has shifted to the south. it's going to roll back to the north later on tonight so i'll have the timeline of that for you coming up in a few minutes. mike, what's going on right now with the commute? >> kari, we have conditio

kari? >> yes, so some of the things that we look at will be the high winds, along with high dry the vegetation is and so we are going to have critical fire danger, critically high fire danger today in some spots, and as we deal with these high winds especially in the high elevations above 1,000 feet, some of those gusts will continue over 60 miles per hour. we've already seen some of those wind gusts this morning and some of us in the valleys will start to feel those high winds later this evening. so we'll talk about when we're expecting the peak of those winds coming up, as you get ready to head on the roads this morning, may already be gusty for you this morning, but overall we have a smooth flow of traffic around the bay area on this holiday. i'll have another update coming up again in a few minutes. >> sounds good. we'll check back with you, kari. >>> 5:40. the chp will answer questions around the chaos. it was tough for drivers on the bay bridge. show activity, reckless driving, chaos.

meteorologist kari hall is tracking that and the weekend forecast. we've been dying to get out for a little walk, kari. it's been rough. >> yeah. we can do that now that the sun has come back out. and we can see from our live camera from san jose, it's be a beautiful morning now. few lingering showers outside the sacramento valley, widening out the view to see what else is out there, the next storm is right there off our coast and will be moving in, starting in the north bay by tomorrow. so, as we look at how much rain we measured, this was huge. a lot of us got more rain with this one storm than we did all season long up to this point. and getting over 10 inches of rain at the santa cruz summit. morgan hill from this one storm reaching six inches of rain. fremont, redwood city, reacing over two inches of rain. we're seeing two inc san jose. oakley reaching over 2 inches of rain. so now that we are getting a chance to let all of that soak in, temperatures are still pretty cool. and we're going to only see it reach into the low 50s for today. we'll ta

meteorologist kari hall tracking it all for us. good morning, kari. >> good morning. we're going to see this rain with us off and on. there will be breaks in between but it's really great to see it moving on through and we're going to see it coming in waves with the potential of some thunderstorms by this afternoon. kind of hit or miss dodging the showers as we go into today as we stop the time line right here at 9:00, we'll see some of the rain moving through the peninsula and parts of the east bay. we can still see that the rain will be passing by with not everyone seeing the rain at the same time, but i think at some point today, all of us here in the bay area will see the rain at some point, and it's going to be fairly light, with this first round moving through, but we could see some heavier rain by the end of the weekend, as well as next week, as these cold temperatures come in, we may also have some snow on some of our bay area hills. we'll be talking more about that as well as how much rain to expect. that's coming up in the forecast but mike headed out the do

meteorologist kari hall is here. we're going to get that rain, kari. >> yes. we've seen it, hit or miss across the bay area. we're tracking it with storm ranger as we get a look at our mobile doppler radar. it's giving us a very clear view of exactly where it's raining, because it's been dotting the bay area. not all of us are seeing it right now. wanted to give you a closer view of the rain that's moving across the richmond, san rafael bridge. that's going to be moving off to the north and east over toward vallejo. we've seen some of those showers moving over toward mt. diablo, the area of martinez, walnut creek and concord. some of the showers moving through around livermore, fremont and covering much of san jose, as well as ove parts of sunnyvale and moving toward showers moving through. it could be heavy at times. we're also watching out for the possibility that some of these cells may be packing some thunderstorms. there could be some brief, heavy downpours as well as small hail and some gusty winds. we'll be watching this as we get a lot of energy buildi

we go to kari hall. kari, that radar behind you looks like a fire hose that is just aimed right smack dab at the station. >> that's a good description because that's what this atmospheric river has been like for the bay area. only blasting certain areas with some really heavy rain fall. and it is slowly moving. it's been going back and forth moving up and down. right now it is starting to push back down. it is moving through parts of the south bay. so let's get a closer look. we have been able to get a of s mountain. it is right over downtown san jose. give it a few more minutes. that rain is going to lighten up. it is still raining quite hard, but it is also going to start to get a little lighter here within the next few minutes. but no broke here for the south county. it is still going to be raining pretty hard at a steady pace as it continues to move out of the santa cruz momountains. for the tri valley, we're still looking at the more moderate to heavy rain fall in some of those areas. but then as we

kari is here. kari, no end in sight. just get close but not real close. >> yeah. and that's, of course, great advice when your mom says, all right, get back. it's for good reason, because those waves have been really high at times. and today we have king tides, which doesn't really have an effect on how big the waves are, but it may draw those waves farther inland. we are right now at the high tide, which will also have some extremely low tide throughout the afternoon. we'll do it all over again tomorrow. throughout the week, the rain will stay to the north of us. we do still have some storms in the region that are pushing these big breakers but we'll also have a warming trend and you're already seeing that at the bottom of the screen as the seven-day forecast comes up. let's get a live look outside at san jose. it is just gorgeous out there. we enjoyed a great weekend across the bay area. we're going to see more of this weather as we go into the next couple of days. nice hiking weather, temperatures for the middle of the afternoon reach into the low 60s. we'll ha

it looks like kari and i are rocking the yellow this morning. it's going to be a beautiful day out there, kari. good morning. >> yes, good morning. and it's tuesday. we're seeing some rain moving across parts of california. but a lot of that rain will just weaken before it gets here. even though we are seeing a lot of green here moving through ukiah, it's some very light showers for the north bay. but the storm is also pushing up some big waves. you combine that with the king tides due to the gravitational pull of the moon, it's bringing the water farther inland and we're going to have a lot of issues here with the possibility of some coastal flooding and some big breakers today. i'll talk more about all of that coming up in the forecast, like what's going on right now for the morning commute? >> bright yellow, i have gray. i'm eeyore. easy one right now. green shows a smooth flow of traffic. look out here toward the north bay. circled up at the top. a little debris up there. do watch out there. no major issues. just a little slowing that showsh

kari? >> i know, isn't this great? even though we've still seen some fog in parts of the north bay, i wanted to show you the current visibility where it lingers in napa, as well as in santa rosa. it's cleared out there, but novato visibility is improving as well so once the fog clears out all across the bay area, we'll see more scenes like this, what we're seeing in san francisco with a lot of sunshine right now. now as we go through the forecast, we are going to have near record high temperatures for today, and we are looking at some of those highs in the upper 60s, and when we look at the extended forecast, it does not change. we are heading into some spring-like weather, highs in the low 70s, as we go into the weekend, but there will be a cooldown as we head into early next week, but it is all dry in this forecast, and we'll talk about the impacts of drought, that's coming up in the next microclimate forecast. scott? >> all right, kari. >>> we watched yesterday at president trump was impeached for a second time in j

kari? >> thank you, bob. i was also checking the pg&e map, looking at the power outages that we have around los gatos as well. so a lot of people waking up without power, hearing those winds roaring. we're still in with these high winds for several more hours, and it will be a touch cooler for today, but we're looking forward to some rain in the forecast. i wanted to show you quickly some of these top wind gusts. they've been unbelievable in some of our mountains, reaching over 90 miles per hour in parts of the north bay. let's go back to that map. we are going to see still some high wind gusts throughout the next several hours, even reaching 54 in san francisco. so we'll talk more about this coming up in a few minutes and what's ahead. mike, what's going on right now for the commute? >>> kari, you and bob start in the south bay, so will i. the map shows you highway 9 just south of highway 35, there were wires down. it was a small fire in the area. the fire is contained but the tree and the wires down affect

good morning, kari. >> good morning. we saw some of the heavier rain moving through during the overnight hours and now we're left with lingering light scattered showers that we're seeing still left on stormranger, our multiple doppler radar. we're still getting a pretty steady downpower just south of san jose through morgan hill and just north of gilroy, so expect the roads to be wet on 101 if you're about to head out for work. we're also seeing the scattered rain over parts of the east bay and it's going to continue with the waves of rain that we could see coming throughout the morning into the afternoon. much of the north bay still covered with scattered light rain so w

meteorologist kari hall is timing it out for us. i know that's pretty easy to do, though. >> but when you think about like snowfall totals, that's pretty extraordinary, right. so we're going to see that as we go throughout the week. we are feeling already some cold air out ahead of there storm system. but this will set theow. take a look at what you'll feel as you head out in santa rosa. we're below freezing. 32 degrees in hayward, also below freezing in morgan hill. livermore at 32 degrees. when we talk about the snow that we'll see on some of our bay area mountains, we could see the potential of getting several inches of snow on mt. hamilton, mt. diablo, as well as some of our north bay mountains. we're also going to see some really heavier rain, especially in our values over the next couple of days and along the coastline. we'll be tracking that, and i'll have a look at how much rain you can expect over the next several days. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, heading out the door, any issues for morning commuters? >>> a wa
