here's nbc bay area terry mcsweeney. >> reporter: st. louise hospital in gilroy tonight confirming 8 of its 80 emergency department staff have tested positive for coronavirus over the past week. a spokeswoman for the santa clara valley health and hospital system says personnel in the emergency department are being tested more frequently, at least every three days as a result of these recent cases. we will be also implementing daily rapid testing of personnel before their shift begins. over the weekend nbc bay area learned of an outbreak at kaiser san jose's emergency department. on christmas day an employee wearing an air powered tree costume walked the hallways of the emergency department. kaiser says that costume likely is responsible for 60 employees getting covid including a registration clerk who died sunday. some nurses question whether kaiser could have done more to keep them safe. they say before the outbreak they were not tested regularly. >> i feel this could have been either prevented or really minimized had testing been done

nbc bay area sky ranger was overhead. police say two pedestrians were crossing the street in the crosswalk when they were hit. that's when the driver got out of the car, took off running. officers caught up with him a few blocks away and arrested him. one pedestrian died at the scene, the other was rush said to the hospital and later died. >>> now to our continuing coverage of the coronavirus pandemic. california's covid winter surge is showing signs of slowing down slightly. this is good news there, but we still haven't yet seen the full impact of the holidays. the state is reporting 27,000 new cases since yesterday. for some perspective there, that's about half the cases we saw at the height of the surge two weeks ago. then, again still double the number of cases we saw during the summer surge back in july. even more troubling here is the state is reporting 428 new deaths. that's almost as many as yesterday. yesterday was the deadliest day in the state since the pandemic began. >> san francisco is extending its stay at

nbc bay area's cheryl hurd just arrived on the scene what can you tell us? >> reporter: atmosphere we are at that jacqueline road exit that you're talking about. this wind is wreaking havoc here. as you can see, the chp has that jacqueline road entrance onto 680 blocked off and they're diverting cars off of the freeway to the city streets. this all started around 9:00 when a fire broke out at country club drive in the milpitas hills. at this point we don't know what sparked the fire, but the way the wind is blowing, you can only imagine that the wind had something to do with it. several streets in the area evacuated. we talked to one evacuee who says that he was told to get out quickly. >> yeah, i think there's a fire, and they called me to get out. i realized it was bad, the smoke. it's really, really weird to see all the smoke. >> reporter: when one of our photographers arrived on the scene, he saw the chp putting out flares and letting people know they needed to get off the freeway. coming down here from the east bay, the road was blocked off. we were tol

in san jose, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. >>> let's check in on icu bed availability around the state. southern california and the san joaquin valley, they're out of standard icu beds. they're at 0%. sacramento area, 11%. the bay area dropping down to 6% available capacity overnight. questi we were at 10% earlier this week. right now only northern california is above that 15% threshold with 33%. as for the stay-at-home orders, the sacramento area shutdown is actually set to end tomorrow. the governor's office said that's not going to happen. they'll likely be extending that. here in the bay area, our stay-at-home order set to expire on january 8th. that likely will also be extended. southern california and the san joaquin valley, they are shut down as well. >>> the pandemic has pushed hospitals to their limits, especially in southern california where some have scrambled to provide oxygen for the critically ill. so the state will be teaming up with the u.s. army corps of engineers to try to fix that. teams will be deployed to six los angeles area hospitals to help upgrade outdated oxyg
