whitmer: i think we will. this election really showed that people in our country how different the laws are in every state. perhaps there is an opportunity to make more uniformity. oregon is thef biggest champion of mail-in ballot thing. they have been doing this for a long time. they wrote the book on how to do it. we have a phenomenal secretary of state in washington -- michigan who has been recommending changes. how can we improve this so every american has confidence in the outcome of our elections? and every ballot gets counted? carrie: i picked up a couple of things off the top you had to deal with. not be thing i would remiss to ask you about is that the federal government foiled a kidnapping attack. that is an extraordinary thing. i wondered since that news broke about two months ago, can you tell us in detail the moment you first learned that there was a plot? to kidnap you what was your immediate reaction what was going through your head at that point? early on in the pandemic, when detroit was heati

host: and it's not just governor whitmer. the mayor of lansing sent a letter to governor whitmer asking for protection. what was he asking for, and what was the response? guest: this week, he was urged but our city council president to ask the governor for national guard assistance this week and in the coming days before the inauguration. he wrote the letter and asked that the guards be activated in case. we learned friday that they would be, so they are ready to roll. host: you said earlier that during the protest in april, people were allowed to bring guns inside the u.s. capitol -- sorry, inside the michigan capitol, but you said something has changed since then. have there been any change? guest: there has. we have a commission that writes rules for the capitol building and they met in an emergency session, a really quick, unscheduled session this week and voted unanimously to ban open carry from the building, which is something they had voted on and not passed just a few months ago, but, like i said, after what we saw on

. >> since that testimony we learned about the plot against governor whitmer. how should people understand the scope and size of that plot against two sitting governors? kathleen: the most important thing people can do when you encounter news about the white power movement and militia groups is to do the very hard work, and i understand this is an almost impossible thing to ask in this moment where we see this barrage of news stories and information all the time, but we have to do the work of putting the stories together. because if you read the governor whitmer story on its own, it is just a few people with one plot. it can seem far-fetched. they were apprehended. an fbi agent was able to circumvent their plans that ended up -- that is the best outcome we can hope for even though it was a serious plot and i would call people's attention to the extensive discussion of explosives and the phrase "removing her for trial," which elsewhere in the movement means a trial by hanging as a treasonous official. the work is in connecting that event to the larger landscape

saw at the capitol, what we saw happen in michigan at the capitol when the mobs went after gretchen whitmer, at the center of that is the misinformation campaign that donald trump has been running for most of his presidency. while donald trump is heading out of office and he's been banned from twitter, what we're seeing here is a situation in which as long as there are other platforms, as long as there are news organizations that will give donald trump and those who support him an opportunity to communicate with these groups, with these mobs in a way they have in the past, we'll continue to see this happen. so we have to dpaddress that sie the misinformation campaign, as long as these groups have a leader, they'll continue to do this. i really do believe for the next administration, it's going to be a question of what do we do to silence what's getting these people riled up, and that's a misinformation over a fraudulent claim that the election was stolen. >> jonathan, house intelligence chairman adam schiff said he would urge the current biden administration to cut off intelligence briefing

obviously, lansing, governor gretchen whitmer, target for some time, but new fears this morning. >> reporter: nowhere is it more felt than here in michigan. the fbi warning all 50 states that in their capitols, on the 17th, this sunday, there may be sort of arm ed protests. it's called the stand up for freedom protest, it's meant to be peaceful, but armed, and called for all 50 capitols. it's not clear how it's going to play out, but here in michigan, they are paying attention, because as you know, back in april, armed protesters took over the state capitol here. it was legal then to carry, open carry long guns in the state capitol, which they did. some of those individuals down the road were then busted for a plot to kidnap the democratic governor of michigan, governor whitmer. all of that was for anti-coronavirus restriction protests after the election, there were armed individual who went to the secretary of state's office here in michigan, along with pennsylvania and wisconsin and georgia and arizona, all of those states that, you know, are sort of the fulcrum about the argument about th
