so their late 1863 wisconsin started drafting a few soldiers into wisconsin regiments. few african-american men and this continued for the rest of the war. wisconsin finally did start recruiting for those colored troops in 1864 early in the year . it was believed by a lot of the army hierarchy and politicians, that black men would not make good soldiers. so the idea was they would be kept out of combat and many of the regiments of the us colored troops that was true. there were two regiments from wisconsin though that saw a lot of combat and one of those was the first one first regiment to take in then from wisconsin that was the 68th u.s colored infantry. it took some work to figure out how this happened. but there are 18 men from wisconsin in this unit who came who was a missouri unit of the united states color troops and these 18 men almost all enlisted in green bay within a month of each other march, 1864. i had to put put together their service records and their pension records to figure out that they were lumberjacks and they had just come out of the forest from c
