[laughter] that was a hard transition for me. i found myself hurting people who did love me, so the first time i was handcuffed is when i was 11 years old. and so by the time, i was 13, after years of threats sending me away at this cooler that school or whatever it was, when i was 13, my mom sent me to military school. david: you went to military school. i assume you are not dying to go to military school. wes: it was not my first choice. david: so they straightened you out a little bit or? wes: they did. it took a while. i think i ran away five times in the first four days. david: then you went to johns hopkins, is that right? wes: that's right. a lot of the men in my life who were mentors all had something in common, they all wore the uniform of this country, so i joined the army

david: ok, he lost once. but, he usually had the advantage of having the client or the person against him admitting, in court, that here or she was wrong. he had to bring the person to the point where they said i'm guilty, i did it, i'm sorry. later, when i went to law school, i realize it doesn't work that way. justice sotomayor: at the tell you, i have been a judge since i was 38 years old. i am now 66. and, it has never happened to me. and i never read a transcript in which i have ever seen it happen at a trial. but, that might be a point as to why civic education, which is our subject tonight, is so important. because, so many people don't realize with the purpose of a court proceeding is. we are not there to find out if somebody committed a crime or not. we are there to determine whether, under the law, a prosecutor has proven that this particular defendant beyond a reasonable doubt, has committed a particular crime. those are two different purposes. because, one, the rule of law requires proof of a cert

david: you go to afghanistan. did you ask for an office job, something where you could not be shot at or something like that? wes: not at all. i was clear. i'd led a group of paratroopers as a special operations officer, information operations, psi ops, psychological operations, and we were in the field. so much of that conversation in 2005 was iraq. we had 150,000 troops in iraq at the time. in afghanistan, only 17,000 troops. i remember when i got the appointment orders for afghanistan, people were like, at least you're not going to iraq. not knowing the fighting in afghanistan at that time. within the first days of afghanistan, i started seeing firsthand a firefight, just what was going on. david: how long were you there? wes: shy of a year. david: you came back to the united states? wes: yes. david: then what did you do? wes: first, a white house fellowship. my friend was a former white house fellow. i came back from a mission and he said i want you to apply for this. he said it is important for people in wash

david: you go into the u.s. navy. were there are lots of young jewish boys from the university of pennsylvania with you? leonard: when i went to the navy, my father said, you know, there are no jews in the navy. i said, ok. i know that too. but that was good. that was the way the united states was. jews were in the minority. everyone was a minority then, but it was fascinating because i grew up, in my view, at the right time to grow up and learn. you don't grow up -- if you grow up in prosperity, you don't understand how to fight hard. i had to fight hard. david: so, one of your activities in the navy was running the commissary on the boat you are on or the ship you are on. how did he manage to make that a very profitable business, and did you realize you were a pretty good business person as a result of making the commissary so profitable? leonard: i became the six-star officer aboard an aircraft carrier. an aircraft carrier, we had 3000 men on board the carrier. i had to get everything they needed and then some. so

david: let's talk about fintech. since you first got into the financial world, the fintech revolution has changed banking and financial services. how does the fed to regulate some of these new fintech companies that are not under the traditional rules of your regulation? are you worried about your inability to control some of these companies that might have an enormous impact on the economy? chair powell: in the financial area, the key thing is that equal activities, the same activity should be regulated the same way no matter where it is. that is one thing. it needs to be regulated in a way that gives consumers and users of that service the protections they need, so they have to understand what the risks are. i think, with the growth of the non-bank financial players, we have work to do to understand and deal with those challenges. in the meantime, we have the legal authority we have over banks and also over some of the payment utilities, and we will use that. but we do not have authority over many other companies n

david: what was your job? did you say to your mother and father, guess what, i would like to be the ceo? the cfo? what was the job you actually had? leonard: my job description was son. david: i always wondered, when you are in business with your parents, do you call your boss mom or do you call her estee? leonard: i would call her mom. however, i would always address her in front of other people as mrs. lauder out of respect, and it worked well. they had trust in me from way back. they said, anything leonard wants to do, he can do. david: so your job was basically everything that your mother and father did not want to do, and your mother became the symbol of the company, really, the face of the company, is that right? leonard: she did everything, my father did everything, but i was the one who sort of brought it together, and my vision was make her famous. everything that i could do to make her famous was a step in the right direction, and she became world-famous because of that. david: how do you keep mental

david: how they stay there. you do not feel inadequate not because you are only the second wealthiest man in the world, is that right? a number of years ago i hired a young investment banker who previously worked for the government. his name was jay powell and he did a terrific job of my firm but he left to go back into public policy work. he has been chairman of the u.s. federal reserve board. he has to deal with the most important economic issues facing the country. let me begin by talking about the state of the economy. your public statements to date in recent interviews makes it sound like you feel the economy is in reasonable shape to go forward from here and you are expecting growth of 5%, 6% this year. is that a correct announcement of your views? >> generally, yes. i would say the economy at this point does seem to be at an inflection point. that makes sense with widespread vaccinations, strong physical policy. you see the economy opening, ridership on airplanes going up and people going back to restaura

david rohde was kidnapped in afghanistan in november. friday night, he and another man reportedly climbed over the wall of a compound where they were being held and fled to safety. >> he was taken prisoner on november 10, it makes it something like 222 days was my count in captivity. we had periodic contact with david himself or with the kidnappers. there were still long periods of time when we didn't have information. and it was scary. i mean, there were certainly times we wondered whether they had been killed. we had no idea what the outcome was going to be. in the end, it may just have been that david had an opportunity, jumped the wall, and got away. i had a brief email from him today because after seven months in captivity, he still is essentially a reporter. he went online and read the web story that we wrote about his escape. he had a few small corrections that he wanted to make, so he sent me an email. he sounds good, sounds healthy. he's completely exhausted. but also exhilarated and relieved. >> incredible. that was bill keller
