we are hearing a lot about miami, where do you think the next silicon valley will be? steve: i don't think it will just be one or two. i have worked in some of these cities and invested in the cities. it's like asking who is your favorite child, you don't answer that question. but we have seen a number of cities really rise up and have shown momentum, including some larger cities that a decade ago were not known as start up cities. even los angeles 10 years ago, chicago, washington, d.c. is part of it. we are back to revolutionary growth in chicago. this company started five years ago and now has 1600 employees and raised $1 billion. that's a company with big data that people would assume would have to be in silicon valley, boston or cambridge area. we are seeing that dynamic. the mayor in miami should get credit. more mayors are doing that. they recognize the future of their cities are in the hands of startups creating jobs in driving a lot of these opportunities. many people are going to be surprised in the next 10 or 20 years how many great, iconic multibillion-doll

amazon, microsoft are not in silicon valley they've never been in silicon valley two of the four most important tech companies have never been in silicon valley. let's not overstate the value of california >> keith, i wonder, when do you think viewers should expect to notice an effect or is there the relationship between jassy and bezos so symbiotic that it will be hard to notice? >> that's a great question i don't really know the answer i don't know if anybody -- if amazon knows the answer. when you still have a chairman looking over your shoulder the degree of freedom you have to change things are constrained. the apple transformation was different because steve jobs died, but at least tim didn't have someone looking over his shoulder it will take years probably to see the effect. >> keith, amazon wins the union vote, hikes pay, crushes earnings you see all of these strong results across these big technology companies does this bode well for them or does it play into the argument that they're just too big for some people's taste? >> well, i don't see having amazon having any impact

it's proof even in silicon valley, i think it pays to think long term. those guys certainly were from the beginning not always to move fast and break things, especially when dealing with customer funds, and so, you know, not many founders in silicon valley would have invited a former federal prosecutor, who they didn't even know, to join their board of directors. but i think that's really a testament to the company that they would invite in people from the government there's an interesting story that is that when fred and brian first started the company, they had lawyers who were telling them they didn't need to get licenses in the jurisdictions where they did business and, you know, they got rid of that firm very quickly, so they've always taken regulation seriously since the very days that coinbase began. >> katie, good morning, it's deirdre. that's a fascinating story that you told, and interesting to look at it in the context of other sort of companies coming up, newcomers and their relationship with regulators i have a media question for you. i coul
