so, we have seen various changes through the years and the state of iowa. and you know what we've seen? greater voter participation through each one of those elections. so, i think there are ways that we should be working together to protect the integrity of elections but make sure that those that are allowed to vote on elections are the ones that are voting. those not allowed to participate are not participating. >> i guess one of the issues is that iowa, for example, republicans did quite well last november, right? >> yes. >> you guys won a lot of races. i don't have to tell you. including donald trump. and, yet, iowa just enacted a whole bunch of new restrictions including county auditors like the job you used to have are no longer allowed to send out applications for absentee ballots unless expressly requested. the time for early voting was reduced. the time on election day for voting was cut back an hour. and on and on. there wasn't a problem for the election to begin with, why enact -- and nor was there evidence of widespread fraud or even muff fraud.

my wife, susan, was born in iowa city. although she was raised in wichita, she spent her summers at coralville and strawberry point. that's why i am back. i watched the northern iowa panthers destroy wichita state, many times. it was emotionally very difficult for me. [laughter] look, it's been almost six months now since the administration left office. i'll be honest with you, it has been tough for me to watch what is going on and what has gone on in these six months. people say to me all the time, i will bet you're glad to have that big that big burden lifted from your shoulders. and i have to tell you, i am not. i wish that i was still there. i wish that i still had the opportunity to do the work that we did for four years, protecting and securing your freedom. protecting your rights. i've got a superintendent in iowa who's coming up a little later, where iowa has banned mask mandates for those schools, most grades are not eligible or a lot of kids are not eligible for the vaccine because they're under the age of 12. what should be the testing regimen for these schools? should they start with a baseline of every student being tested? should there be testing every week, every two weeks, month, what do you think? >> yeah, i mean, i think it's too bad that these schools are not requiring masks because they are a really effective layer of protection. we can think about this as if you're going to remove the layer of masking, what can you replace it be w? ideally it's with vaccination but if that's not possible, twice weekly testing for every student and teacher that's unvaccinated can be a replacement for masks. not completely, though. and so that's why i really hope that parents and these schools will still consider wearing -- having their child wear masks but i also think that twice weekly testing can be a really important addition to help to make schools safe. >> dr.

in georgia and iowa they have cut early voting. in alabama, arkansas, georgia, iowa, kentucky, oklahoma, they've shortened the time you get to apply for a mail ballot. in arkansas they've also shortened the amount of time you have to get that ballot back in. in arizona and florida they'll be kicking people off the absentee voter lists. in arizona, iowa, florida, kentucky, louisiana, texas, utah, they'll be expanding voter purges, kicking people off the voter rolls entirely. in florida, georgia, montana, arkansas, new hampshire, wyoming, there's new harsher, stricter, narrower voter i.d. requirements. and yes, in florida and georgia they're banning water or any food or snacks for anyone in line no matter how long the line gets, no matter how hot it is that day, no matter how old the waiting voter is. 18 different states, 30 different voter restriction laws and counting. those are passed. those are law. and the effort to find a way to stop it, to try to put a floor under voting rights nationwide so no state can restrict voting rights
