a representative from chicago by the name of harold washington amended the voting rights act so that one could invoke the effects of discrimination and not have to prove intent. sometimes it is impossible to prove intent to strengthen the voting rights act. it is that today with what we have learned as a society and decisions from the supreme court, we are advancing the voting rights act and honoring john lewis. all of us have a great honor of saying we knew him and we served with him and we celebrate his humanity and his struggle for opportunity for everyone in our country. there is another personal note to those that when harold washington, the former representative got recruited by the people to become the first black mayor of chicago, he empowered communities that were never represented in chicago city hall by building coalitions, empowering not just black and brown people but all people. especially women in his administration. the calling for those who do the right thing is that they will achieve even greater things. today, we celebrate the work and the legacy of john lewis. at
