i love donna edwards. we're good friends, our friendship is stronger than our disagreement in this moment. i'm going to take disagreeable point here. first of all, for joe biden and that statement, the buck stops with him, not with donald trump. that's a tough statement to point back to donald trump and say, "i inherited a mess." sure, that may be true. i mean donald trump probably should not have negotiated what he did, but joe biden is the president now. more importantly, we have learned in the last week that the only thing that stood between the taliban taking control of afghanistan was the 2,500 american troops there, and they were very successfully preventing the taliban forces from taking control. an army of about 300,000 afghans were technically the fighters, we were in an advise and consent role. we had not had a casualty in over a year fortunately. that 2,500 force from the u.s. was doing remarkable work protecting peace, actually protecting the region and protecting our national security interest

i want to ask you, donna edwards, about this broader cycle that we're living through. what was your reaction? most people were surprised that this ended in a resignation. >> well, i was surprised, but also when i listened to andrew cuomo's statement i was a little bit offended. we are the same age, which means that andrew cuomo and i grew up in a time where since we were in kindergarten sex discrimination and harassment in the workplace has been unlawful. for him to cast this generational line on his behavior i thought was offensive and continued to blame women as somehow women are responsible for his bad behavior. i don't think that there was an acceptance of what he did, and i think that there is accountability and resignation, but there may have to be more accountability for a man who doesn't seem to recognize the lines have never been drawn where he said during his adult lifetime. >> madam senator, first your reaction and then i would like your thoughts about new york's next governor. >> yeah. i think i, like many folks, was surprised to hear the governor resign to

edwards are back. the answer to that question for most americans, am i going to send your son or your daughter to war in afghanistan forever, is no. >> yeah, i think that's exactly right. i think the president in his policy has captured the views of the american people. i think about afghanistan as not one war. it started out as one thing, one mission, and that was to go after those who attacked us on 9/11, and then it became a different war and has become a different war over the ensuing couple of decades. and i think what the president was reflecting is that americans are no longer willing to fight an endless war. and he did what other presidents tried to do, but were unable to do, and, yes, it has been messy, and, yes, i am deeply troubled about what is happening with afghan women, some of whom i worked with as ngo leaders, as parliamentarians, but that is a role for diplomacy and humanitarian effort, and not a role for our service men and women who have sacrificed more than enough. >> i mentioned a

i interviewed former congresswoman donna edwards of maryland this morning and i asked her was he surprised by how messy and cotic this is, and she said, listen, whether the united states had gotten out two years ago, ten years ago, 15 years ago, 18 years ago, it was bound to be messy and chaotic, but i don't know if anyone really anticipated that it would look like this. >> brangham: mihael, is that your sen as well, that we're simply talking about the time frame here? i mean, could this departure have been managed any differently in your mind? >> i think you have to step back a step. this is a case where offensive combat operations for the united states ended in 2014. this was a residual force that was left to do two things -- support the afghan military and to fig al quaida. they had a ct role. they were doing that quite well. they were at risk of casualties quite low. there was a cost to that, but the cost we are incurring now is far greater than the cost of maintaining 3,000 troops inthe circumstance like this. we have troops all over the world. so this was a completely unnecessary cho
