i agree with senator durbin that we've been on this journey for a long time. that doesn't mean you double down and triple down and do -- listen to this. i got here two and a half years ago, roughly $18 trillion in debt. we're now roughly $28 trillion in debt. not including what we're going to do here on this hard infrastructure bill and the $3.5 trillion. all of it has merit for discussion. but if you spend money and consume it and borrow it without having the political will of doing what you have to do in any other entity, pay for it sustainably, it's not the foundation for this place or any entity. i want to give you a little description about what we do here currently. we spend $4.5 trillion a year, we take in revenues of $3.5 trillion, that's a chronic trillion dollar deficit. that's borrowing 23 cents, roughly, out of every dollar that you spend. and, again, it's not for a tangible investment, it's for consumption. and now with what we're baselining into the future, that is going to go up close to $1.5 trillion and we ought to be looking at what's driving

i want to get your reaction to what we're hearing from senator durbin. what is your big takeaway about what we're learning from the testimony in. >> one, just learning through again seven plus hours of testimony how close the former president was to all of this. and i think the big thing that they're still trying to piece together is motivation. the senate recently put together a report looking at the failure and breakdowns and systems that led to the attack on the capital on january 6th. what it didn't get into is the motivations and particularly whether the former president was intimately involved in some of the things that were happening behind the scenes that led to the attack. that's something the january 6th committee is committed to trying to find out. i think testimony from someone like jeffrey rosen, senator dick durbin said he wants to hear from jeffrey clark, he was the one who was heading this division at the justice department under the former president, and he was also very closely tied to this, rosen testified during those meetings that cl

durbin: but if you listen to dr. moody, and she's pretty convincing, i think it's we have made in patent law cannot serve the purpose of research innovation or the benefits to the consumers. it is all about monopoly control of some of these drug so you can have profits for a longer time. isn't that right? geoffrey: i guess i would take issue with a couple of comments made by my learned colleague, dr. moody. first of all, it is not that easy to get a patent. to get a patent, you have to show the invention is penta double. it has to have novelty, utility, and other features that entitle it to get a patent. i would also point out that innovation does not stop upon approval of a product. there are many very important innovations in product of element postapproval that benefit patients tremendously. things like even changing the dosage form of a product from an injectable, to an oral. even reducing dosage frequency or allowing for a fixed drug combination instead of having patients take multi-drugs for hiv or other condit

this is senator dick durbin, who happens to be chairman of the senate judiciary committee. he was asked this afternoon by my colleague and friend nicolle wallace if what we witnessed after the election was an attempted coup. we'll discuss on the other side. >> look at the progression of events. first, the onslaught of lawsuits going through the judiciary with many of the judges that he appointed. then he went to the department of justice, and he decided he would manipulate the attorney general into really initiating an investigation into particular states. and we know what happened then. he turned the mob loose on the united states capitol. so we shouldn't just dismiss this as a bad day for donald trump. it was conscious, planned strategy that did not work. >> so neal, in your view, how close did we come? and do you take the optimistic view that's out there about your beloved department of justice that the good news is the system held? >> i think we came very close from everything it looks like. and yeah, the system held, but it held because of a couple of people. and it lo
