let's talk about this now with sarah keith lucas from the bbc weather centre. where is hurricane ida right now and is it likely to make a direct hit on new orleans? at the moment it is around about 300 miles just south of the north coast of the gulf of mexico, so we have already seen that storm over the past 24 hours or so. it made landfall in cuba so it had winds at that point at around about 80 miles per hour as it swept across western cuba. it is quite a fast—moving storm now, it is rapidly intensifying as it moves its way northwards. what it is doing is moving over some fairly warm waters in the gulf of mexico and as you were saying, it is going to be moving fairly close to new orleans. at the moment, the forecast track of this storm — it is moving its way north—westwards so it is likely to make landfall out to the west of new orleans at the moment, but of course forecast tracks can change a little bit. yeah, and of course the reason i mention the city is that it is 16 years ago this weekend that we saw hurricane katrina which caused flooding of about
