ed, florida governor ron desantis is taking the fight over masks in schools to a whole new level tonight. what is the latest? >> well, the governor there in florida is threatening to take away the salary of superintendents and school board members who insist on requiring students to wear masks now when schools go back to session. this is a dramatic move by the florida governor. they are just a week after the state is reporting its worst week ever in the number of new coronavirus cases. there are two counties in florida who are already defying the governor's orders, so we will have to wait and see how this plays out here in the coming days. and we're now starting to see the same thing here in texas, wolf, where governor greg abbott for weeks has been saying there will be no new mandates or shut down. and this as schools are set to launch here in texas. the first school district has come out today here in dallas saying that they will require students when they go back into school next week, teachers, administrators and students, to be wearing masks. i spoke with the superintendent here in

ron desantis has to watch his right flank, as well. and he's got a challenge from the most reckless governor in the entire nation when it comes to the virus. that, of course, is christy gnome. she is republican of south dakota. christy gnome essentially set off a biological weapon last summer throughout the entire midwest, not just her state, by allowing the sturgis motorcycle rally to go on. more than 400,000 people descended on the small south dakota city. and then, went back to their home states leading to over 200,000 covid cases according to an estimate from one study. and governor gnome recently bragged about not shutting down or instituting mandates throughout the pandemic. now, south dakota has one of the highest-death rates per capita in the country. and unlike states in the northeast that, remember, got hit before we had really any testing capacity or really knew what was going on. you know, south dakota was not in that first wave. south dakota had plenty of time to prepare for its outbreak, which hit its peak last winter. bu

is ron desantis, is he right to ramp up this fight? >> well, we live in a system where both the federal government and the state governments share power. and on an issue like this quite frankly i think the decision should be made state by state by the state legislature or in some cases the governor with authority from the state legislature. i think in terms of the lockdowns, sandra, i don't think we are going to go back to another lockdown. i just don't think the american people will stand for it. number two, on the masks, my attitude about the masking or not wearing a mask, it is a side show. it is a subordinate issue and distraction. if you want to wear a mask, wear one, if you don't, don't. the mask unless it is an n-95 and worn properly, there is benefit but only a marginal benefit. to me the issue is the vaccine. now, i don't believe any government should require anybody to take the vaccine. it is up to the individual. the bill of rights is there to protect our -- is not there to control people, it is there to control government.
