here to help me bring all of this into perspective is msnbc and my pal ali velshi. ali, i have to tell you, this is just devastating in afghanistan. the united states, this was a 20-year investment, $83 billion investment and people are saying that the people in afghanistan are lacking the political will to fight the taliban. but is that true? or is it that they literally cannot topple an organization like the taliban? >> it's more complicated than that statement. what the president of afghanistan has said is they're activating their forces. the americans trained 350,000 people to fight the taliban. so, you would hope you would be seeing more success than you're seeing right now. let me give you a picture of it all right. this is kabul, the capitol right here. this is all afghanistan. the orange area is stuff that's taliban controlled. the beige is contested. the white is government. so you can see there's very little government control. now on this side, this is all iran over here. this is all the former soviet central asian republics over here and this is pakistan
