ali velshi is in new orleans. morgan chesky in houma, louisiana. shaquille brewster in gulfport, mississippi. let's start with ali velshi, who is standing right in the middle of everything. as i was watching the reporting over the last couple hours in new orleans, you were noting that the power was going out in your location. it comes and goes. looks like also maybe wind and rain has gone down a little bit, too. >> yeah. yeah, in fact, an hour ago when bill karins was saying he thought he saw a gust at new orleans airport of 95 miles per hour and he thought i might be getting about 75-mile-per-hour winds, things have changed dramatically. the rain is generally speaking falling straight down right now. winds are lower. i will say there's pooling of water, which wouldn't be a big deal in a hurricane under normal circumstances. it's always a concern in new orleans because this is a city that is below sea level. but they have invested $16 billion since this very day 16 years ago when katrina hit to avoid floding. we're a little more conscious of water

i'm alex witt in for velshi. we're following the breaking news on ida as the gulf coast prepares for a devastating storm. ida is expected to make landfall a few hours from now and rapidly gaining strength over the open, warm waters of the gulf of mexico. this time yesterday, ida was a category one hurricane. but overnight, the storm jumped from a category 3 to a dangerous category 4 storm with the intensifying sustained winds now of 150 miles per hour. with a mix of voluntary and mandatory evacuations across the region, officials are urging residents to either get out right now or hunker down. louisiana governor john bell edwards said that time is very quickly running out. >> the window of time is closing. it is rapidly closing. and just like we said yesterday, by the time you go to bed tonight, you need to be where you intend to ride the storm out and you need to be as prepared as you can be. >> to that point, it may be too late. ida may be the strongest storm to hit anywhere in louisiana since the 1850s. ida co

we have ali velshi from new orleans. ali velshi, i will start with you. what is the latest in new orleans and what are you seeing? >> power is completely hot in new orleans and in a lot of louisiana. the vast majority of them was because of a transmission, a transmission failure. that happened a four hours after dark. one of the things we could tell about it is while new orleans missed the brunt of the storm we still got a lot of it. the winds were very, very high. 150 miles per hour. not here, we're getting gusts of 100 miles per hour or more in new orleans along with that pelting rain for hours and hours and hours. this was the type of damage that we're seeing here. an entire structure coming down. but you see things like this aacross the. that was the ripping off of the wind for hours and hours and hours. there are chain link fences down, gates down, trees, electrical poles, no sense of when the power is coming back up here, but one thing there isn't here, garrett, is flooding. this is a below sea level city and they spent $16 billion since hurricane k

with ali velshi weathering the storm. tonight, hurricane ida is a category 2 storm, but a powerful one at that. let's begin with ali in new orleans, where the power has been out for some time, and it looks like it's going to be out for a while. >> reporter: yeah, joshua, we're in the 11th hour since landfall of this storm, and it's still whipping up. you can see this water behind me in new orleans, which wasn't sort of inside of the center of this hurricane to start with. so it's a very, very powerful storm, and it's mostly hitting new orleans on the backside of this thing. we saw it pop up in wind about 2, 2 1/2 hours ago, to pretty intense. it started to let off for a little while, and we're still getting big gusts and bands. what ended up happening about a couple of hours ago is we lost power. we lost it in the local area here downtown. i thought it might have been central to this block or building. we learned there was a much bigger problem. it was what they call a catastrophic problem in energy, the power transmissio

i do believe we have video of ali velshi for us in new orleans. i was told i'm not going to be able to speak with him. that signal is not strong enough, but i just want you to take a look at these visuals. bill, you should feel free to add any color. i mean, that, by all accounts, a powerful storm. >> we have been telling our crews, we try to update our crews and tell them what to prepare for and when. we have said all along that around 6:00 p.m. new orleans time is when we expect the worst of the winds. the peak of the winds to be, right around there. we're head nothing to that window now in the next 45 minutes to an hour. if that western eyewall goes through new orleans, they could have three to four hours of what you have been seeing now, maybe even a little worse. so the storm gets closer but weaker. >> we also have some live video from houma we can take a look at. you can see there. see the wind gusts there. >> this is it. morgan chesky has been in houma. they were thinking, we were thinking the eye was going to go right over him. unfortunate

here to help me bring all of this into perspective is msnbc and my pal ali velshi. ali, i have to tell you, this is just devastating in afghanistan. the united states, this was a 20-year investment, $83 billion investment and people are saying that the people in afghanistan are lacking the political will to fight the taliban. but is that true? or is it that they literally cannot topple an organization like the taliban? >> it's more complicated than that statement. what the president of afghanistan has said is they're activating their forces. the americans trained 350,000 people to fight the taliban. so, you would hope you would be seeing more success than you're seeing right now. let me give you a picture of it all right. this is kabul, the capitol right here. this is all afghanistan. the orange area is stuff that's taliban controlled. the beige is contested. the white is government. so you can see there's very little government control. now on this side, this is all iran over here. this is all the former soviet central asian republics over here and this is pakistan

>>> we have a team of reporters on this, but let's go ahead and go out to in accordance, where ali velshi is braves the elements. we've been watching a drive cam here, we've seen a lot of heavy wind and debris. are you seeing the same? >> we're seeing -- we're not at the worst of it here in new orleans. as you know, 16 years to the date that hurricane katrina pummelled this city. a lot has changed since then. they spend upwards of $16 billion to protect it from flooding. it's a below sea level city, and some parts flood easier than others. they feel pretty secure about how the waterways will work. lake pontechartrais is over there. emergency response will not be out on the streets. i'm not going to ask my photographer to turn around, because i'm in front of a billing here, where you're starting to see -- bits the of roof come out you see guests like that. these are not sustained winds. these are gusts coming through. i'm a sizable guy, so to have wind blows me like, means it's pretty serious. the risk is trees coming down onto power lines, things like that. the good news here is that, unl
