if you think of flight 93, all that happened on the plane with todd beamer and bringing the plane down because it could have gone to the u.s. capitol or the white house and if you think of flight 77 hitting the pentagon actually it hit the pentagon going through 3 rings of the five-ring pentagon but it was on a section that was being renovated and there were large office that is were empty on that section. people did die but many, many more could have. you think about what could have been and what happened and where we go next. john: also worth pointing out that the flights that were hijacked were very lightly loaded, now, that's no consolation to the people whose loved ones were on board those planes but to have, for instance, on flight 77 40 people on board a 757, that's a very light load, indeed. you have been to afghanistan many times as a result of what happened on that day and obviously as a result of the launching of the war there. give us your thoughts on that, bret. >> well, i think you can't look at this day without looking at what has transpired in afghanistan over the last

and then todd beamer called back and was on the phone with someone from the airline company and said, keep talking to me, this is what we're thinking of doing, would you pray with me, and prayed. >> he said the lord's prayer. >> stayed the lord's prayer. and then he said, "let's roll". and these amazing heroes rushed the cabin and we don't know how, but they got through the door and the plane crashed into shanksville. there was some fear on air force one. the president had given an order or at least confirmed an order that our fighter pilots could shoot down a commercial jetliner if it was not complying with the faa. some of us wondered, did we shoot that down? that would have been traumatic for the pilot and it would have changed the whole nature of the debate. instead, heroes responded and every one of them would have gotten a medal of honor if they were in the military. they were not. so we have to honor them and that's what we've got to do. and so, you know, september 11th, people gave up their labels, we all became americans. we all became americans. and people in other countries

once you learned that, you know, we have i have heard some stories about flight 93, the story of todd beamer, let's roll. how do you piece together what happened on that plane that has frankly inspired some over these years? >> to me, i think, there were stories about those who made phone calls. i don't think in the end those stories matter as much as the entire group, all 40 collectively made a decision. we will never really know exactly what happened on flight 93. what we know is 40 people stopped a terrible act from happening and all of them collectively are heroes together. pete: absolutely. tell me about your cousin, richard, if you would. >> richard, i didn't know him really well because i was a bit younger than him. but from what i understand a lover of the environment like myself. i love outdoors stuff. someone who gave his life for his career in wildlife with the government as i had done with the military. also someone who had a lot of passion, whether it was gardening or playing music. in fact, he built his own guitars to play on. he loved to cook. so whatever richard did he did to

it's a moment that took me back to the beginning of our war on terror, when todd beamer whispered the words of let's role in pennsylvania. and as carlos wrote this week, the passengers of that flight quitely voted in the back of the plane where to rush the cockpit and take their own plane down to protect others on the ground. as he writes, they voted on it. they voted, even in that moment of unfathomable fear and distress, the passengers took a moment to engage in the great american tradition of popular consultation before deciding to become this war's earliest soldiers. he asks at the end, was there ever any doubt as to the outcome of that ballot? of course there wasn't. as you know. and the stories of the goodness of americans who are now coming together, coming together from the left, from the right progressives, evangelicals, coming together to welcome these afghan refugees to our shores, i have no doubt that despite all of our failings and our flaws, we as a nation will continue stumbling toward the light. just watch us. we'll be right back. hi, i'm debra. i'm from colorado. i've
