with a new department of public safety. the floyd protests and calls continued after a jury found ex officer derek chauvin guilty and he was subsequently sentenced to 22 a half years in prison. we got justice, but not enough justice, but i will celebrate guilty conviction on the police officer that killed the black man because far too many times we see them kill us. and get right away with it. we need true justice. that's not one case. that is a social transformation. that says that nobody's beneath the law and no one is above it. let's take a look at some national numbers, according to the group, interrupting criminalization, at least 20 large u. s cities have cut their police budgets. those cuts, adding up to about $840 million total $160 million so far has been invested in communities. cops have been removed from schools in 25 cities, according to about $34 million saved. on the flip side, bloomberg reports more than 20 large cities, increased police spending in 2021. opponents of defund argue it leads to rising crime an

the fire department is a family. we live together, eat together, sleep in the same dorm together, go to crazy calls together, dangerous calls and we have to look out for one another. when i was burned in a fire years ago and i felt responsible, i felt awful. i didn't want to talk to any of my civilian friends. they couldn't understand what i was going through. the firefighters knew, they understood. they had been there. it is a different relationship. we have to rely on one another. in terms of me being the chief of the department, i am really trying to maintain an open relationship with all of our members in the field so myself and my deputy chiefs, one of the priorities i had was for each of us to go around to different fire stations to make sure we hit all within the first three or four months to start a conversation. that hasn't been there for a while. part of the reason that i am getting along well with the field now is because i was there. i worked there. people know me and because i know what we need. i know w

and crucially, what is the department of justice going to do about it? julia fernandez is former deputy assistant attorney general of the department of justice under president barack obama. she is now associate director of institutional accountability at the rockefeller family funding. the department of justice came out the other day and said, look, this is a constitutionally enshrined right as supreme court jurisprudence firmly establishes, and our job is to protect constitutional rights. that was sort of about it. i think the question is, well, what are the options for doj action here? >> well, chris, i think that the department coming out with a statement that they're interested in protecting the constitutional rights of women is wonderful, but they need a statute and they need to figure out what statute might apply. this is kind of uncharted territory in many ways because of the structure of the texas law and because this is just a very challenging -- it's very challenging to figure out what's the right fit. for example, there's something called the

library department. in subsection "e," also in that same area, to add similar language, which is "if the permit consultant contacts the designated employees or officers' department to carry out permitting services," again, clarification narrowing. page four, lines 16 to 17: "permit consulting services will be set forth in article 3, chapter 4." on page five, lines 18 to page six, line two, same language for lobbyists, to add at the end of subsection 4: "if the contact lobbyists or expenditure lobbyist is designated to lobby, to the officers' department." and at the end of that provision, "if the permit consultant contacts the designated employees' department to carry out permit consulting services," and i am working with the city attorney to further clarify and define what "indirect" means in the legislation, which right now is a term of art. we're trying to get more specificity on that. hopefully they will be non-substantive and not require any additional meet and confer as they will further narrow. so
