how are things shaping up, kari? >> i think it's mostly going to be the north bay we will have to watch for the air quality. looking at some of the forecast and the numbers for the air quality outlook, it's the same or lower than it was yesterday. we are still going to have drifts of smoke coming in and constantly changing. our temperatures will be hot today. we're headed towards the upper 80s and 90s. the north bay temperatures, 87 today in santa rosa. we'll talk more

kari has a look at the forecast for us. >> there's a red flag warning alert. you see the areas shaded in red in the areas of high fire danger, and we will be in the red flag warning all throughout today, and our valley temperatures headed towards the low 90s and we're going to start to see some of the smoke coming back in, especially by tomorrow. as we look at our forecast for today, temperatures warming up mid-70s for san francisco. we will see the temperatures in the mid-80s for the south bay, 82 for hayward, and 93 in concord as well as 92 in santa rosa. we are going to have hotter temperatures, dry winds as well as some very low humidity so we are monitoring all of the wind gusts that we have this morning as we do see the winds picking up. i will have more of that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes, laura. >>> as kari mentioned, the red flag warning has residents on alert. >> these two remember when this fire came close to their dublin townhome in august of 2019. >> we live on the back of these homes, and my son and my wife tried to react and call

kari, we did not need this. this is going to be a chance for more fire. >> yeah, and this is coming on that one-year anniversary of us dealing with the orange skies we had last year that were triggered by all of the lightning storms that we had in august. taking a look at what is going on for now, the national weather service put up the fire weather watch in yellow, and that includes a big chunk of the bay area and that's because we are seeing thunderstorms moving through and the rain drying up so there could be dry lightning and a risk of that could create locally gusty winds into friday morning, and the fuels, the vegetation is extremely dry. what is happening here, we have a couple systems moving our way, one coming in from the north that will provide energy, and one from the south providing moisture. these two systems on a collision course over the bay area and are going to produce a chance that we could see thunder and lightning starting further to the north and then right over the bay area later on tonight

i want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. she's been tracking the showers and where the rain will land. kari? >> yes. we are going to see a lot of changes here as we go through the forecast. we have been tracking the smoke and the air quality as we are heading out for lunchtime. we're still dealing with some moderate air quality. for those people with breathing problems, who are sensitive to the smoke, limit your time out there. moderate air quality is just below a spare the air alert day. so we are looking at the hazy skies. some of the worst of the air quality will be in the north bay going into this afternoon. we are going to see still some smoky conditions into the day tomorrow. we are going to seealk more abo that and the rain chances in the forecast coming up in a few minutes, marcus. >> looking forward to it. thank you. >>> blazing fires around california's sierra nevada are threatening sequoia national park's trees. the fire, sparked by the lightning, well, it's threatening the giant forest of sequoia, more than 2,000

we want to go to meteorologist kari hall. we were very nervous that we could see some fires sparked by that lightning. and we sure did. luckily, they were small. >> yeah. luckily they were small. the crews have been working so hard to make sure that we don't get any more large fires. we will still have to watch things over the weekend because sometimes when lightning strikes a very heavily forested area, it may be under the brush where you start to get some of those sparks. and once conditions dry out, then it starts to spread. so we will have to see how this pans out. let me show you the loop once again looking at a wide view of what happened over the past 12 hours with all of that lightning activity. we did see a little bit of rain, some spots got a decent amount of rain. but it just moved through so quickly and we're watching that area near the caldor fire. things are quieting down, still some lingering showers around the dixie fire also some lightning strikes but there were also some heavy downpours. so we will continue t

meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking those conditions. good morning, kari. >> good morning. an air quality advisory is a step below the spare the air alert, and still people sensitive to the smoke need to limit their time outside. this is the air quality issues, and once again for people that may be sensitive or have breathing problems, children and elderly should limit time outside. we have temperatures in the mid to upper 50s in fremont and it's going to be cooler than normal as our highs reach into the upper 70s and low 80s for some of our warmest spots inland. we are getting ready for a labor day weekend heat up. i'll have more on that in the forecast in a few minutes. mike has been tracking a major issue coming through the tri-valley >> yeah, there are lots of folks traveling -- we'll call it the bay area extended. there's a problem for west 580. no change in the status from the earlier lanes blocked. this will include folks coming from vasco. there's one last exit you can take that will take you to livermore avenue out of that portion, and i would suggest that. other f

what can we expect, kari? >> we are going to have hot temperatures today as well as the high winds that have been also pushing that fog away from the coast. for the north and east bay hills and inland areas as well we will see the red flag warning continue for today as our highs reach up to 90 degrees. air quality is good today but we will start to see that smoke returning for tomorrow. taking a look at our air quality -- or our relative humidity forecast for today we have been talking about some of the relative humidity numbers how dry the area is dropping down into the single digits, and if we make it through today without incident it looks better as far as relative humidity. still going to be hot. temperatures reaching in the low 90s in the inland areas. we'll talk more about the fire danger coming up. >>> mike, you are tracking a crash at one of the bridges? >> yeah, here at the carquinez bridge just before the toll plaza. the crash has moved all of the vehicles -- i believe there are three involved -- to

we are going to check in with meteorologist kari hall. we're hoping that we can get over this lightning hump and enjoy a nice weekend. >> yeah. the threat of lightning is starting to wind down. we're still looking at a few lingering showers but the rest of the day will continue to clear out. if you're heading to sonoma valley it's going to be a nice weekend. highs reaching into the low 80s. we are going to see a little bit more of the hazy and smoky conditions going toward the end of the weekend as our temperatures warm up by sunday in the upper 80s there. and then if you do plan to head to the coast taking a look at stinson beach, mid 70s by the end of the weekend. half moon bay and monterey are going to be in the 60s with the clouds and fog lingering near the coast. santa cruz a touch warmer reaching 87 and the rest of the weekend, mix of sun and clouds. you know how it is starting out in the morning with the clouds and seeing the sun breaking out for the afternoon. warm and sunny for l.a. if that's where your weekend plans take you. it

kari, rain in the forecast? >> yeah, looking forward to cooler temperatures and showers out ahead of the cold front that will help clear out the air and drop our temperatures for today. the chance is mostly for the north bay where we could see showers here at noon, north of ukiah and moving in closer going through today. spotty showers as well near the coast, mist and drizzle, as well as the fog. there could be spotty light showers making it inland to the east bay. looks so much better today and we'll talk about that coming up. >>> mike, you are giving us a look at the bay bridge. >> yeah, look at that westbound -- oh, familiar signs. folks heading into san francisco over the weekend had the closure from west 80 to 101, and that has been cleared. not only was that cleared already, but cleared a day ahead of time, so great job caltrans. the lanes were clear and everything was moving smoothly including the san mateo bridge, and something did show up and i think it could be on the 92 bridge, and i'll check on that

kari, i know you love a good sunrise. >> absolutely. if you are somewhere out and around in the bay area, you take a picture of the pretty sunrise, send it to me on social media. we're going to see our temperatures in the upper 50s this morning. it's going to heat up fast. we're going from the upper 50s to the mid-80s. take a look at the high temperatures. we will see the temperatures shooting up to about the low 90s today in the inland east bay, north bay. in the south bay we have mid-80s. this is going to be warmer than the weekend and we are watching out for the fire danger. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. >>> mike, you are updating a problem in the tri-valley. >> yeah, you are jammed up just past -- south of bernal and that's causing an issue going into livermore and pleasanton. one lane blocked but three vehicles there, and they can't get the tow truck there. folks, if you get on to foothill road you still have to get into the backup there. meanwhile the dublin interchange, typical slowing so that's one avenue if you w

kari, how is it looking for us today? >> looks good, whenever you are taking a road trip, and when the leaves start to change i will give you a forecast for great foliage and great spots to head, so keep tuned for that. we have fresh air to breathe as we have a strong westerly wind kicking up, and we have some systems passing by and not bringing rain but the clouds are interesting with the clouds dotting the sky, and we are going to get a look at oakland, as you are heading out the door, that morning commute or heading to the station, it's going to be in the low 50s and then rise into the 60s by late morning. a mix of sun and clouds. for the south bay, heading towards 78 degrees in downtown san jose. these temperatures are a few degrees warmer compared to yesterday and we will start to feel itasbay with antiocheaing 75 degrees, and low 60s for daly city. we will reach into the low 70s in san mateo. san francisco, upper 60s. a lot more of the sunshine again today. novato reaching 83 degrees and 82 today in santa rosa. here

meteorologist kari hall has that forecast for us. the trolley doesn't have any windows in it so the weather is a big concern for a lot of people who want to get on that. >> yeah. it's going to be chilly. i think a lot of people like to hang off the back and enjoy all of the views. it's going to be jacket weather indeed. as we get a look at our air quality, we've had a lot of the smoke moving in, some moderate air quality, but these green sensors indicate that our air quality is pretty good. hopefully you'll be able to spend more time outside today, even though there may be drifts of smoke. take a look at these temperatures heading into the upper 60s for hayward and oakland. some low 80s for concord. 75 degrees from morgan hill and santa rosa today will reach a high of 76 degrees. nice cool down for this time of year. we'll talk about all of the changes ahead in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >>> all eligible students in one of the bay area's largest counties may be required to be vaccinated for covid. kari, how long is it going to last? >> this continues until 11:00 this evening. we're looking at those really strong winds pushing that fire off towards the east. this is a look at all of the fire detection networks and what they're sensing as far as fire that's already burned in yellow and the active fires and where that fire is moving. let me show you some really positive signs that i'm seeing here. the fire is getting very close, we do have a lot of red sensors here. and then it's about three miles from south lake tahoe. but notice that we are seeing a lot more of these red boxes spreading off towards the east. in this direction we are seeing that there is a lot more of the rugged back country and some more rocky terrain here. even though we're seeing that fire spreading to the east, it looks like these firefighters are keeping it away from south lake tahoe, allowing for that fire to spread off to the east rather than pushing a little bit farther to the north which would push it closer to the lake. so we are seeing them really working hard here in these very u

kari, are we headed outside or stuck inside? >> well, i think a lot of people will be stuck inside today if you are sensitive to the smoke. we are starting out this morning in concord. nice and cool. air quality is good as temperatures are starting out in the upper 50s, some clouds and it will gradually warm up today. you may want to make plans to stay inside, even though these temperatures are going to be so comfortable today, only reaching in the low 80s in antioch, and 67 for a high in oakland and in san francisco we are looking at a high of 64 degrees. temperatures heat up this weekend. we will talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. >>> mike, any issues for the morning commute? >> we are tracking the deadly crash that had interstate 580 completely closed this morning. three lanes are still closed and a lot of activity because of a deadly crash involving a pedestrian. the car did hit them and stayed at the scene and an investigation tips to build the backup west 580 from north greenville now, and we are crawling up

meteorologist kari hall here timing this out, and then there's a flex alert on top of that, kari. >> yeah. so we do need to conserve energy between the hours of 4s and 9:00 because of the heat, but we're also dealing with the big concern that we have here for the next i would say 24 hours as we're going to see this red flag warning continue. now just starting for the 5:00 hour this evening. continuing until 11:00 tomorrow morning. all of these shaded in red are included in that, and it includes much of the north bay as well as inland east bay for the hills on the diablo range. here's what's going on. we're seeing a couple of weather systems merging together. the first one moving in from the north will provide some nurse, enough lift in the atmosphere, but we're also getting that combined with some moisture surging up that we're already seeing this morning from the remnants of a tropical system that has extended into the bay area. so far we've seen a couple of very light spotty showers and even over ukiah we're getting some rain. we're thinking oh, yes, the rain, great. this rain is m

meteorologist kari hall keeping busy. bob talked about that expectation that there would be more extreme fire danger. the fire itself starts to create its own weather too. >> it does. usually during the early morning hours we have higher humidity and lighter winds and prime time for the firefighters to really tackle this while conditions are more redictble. unfortunately we haven't seen that. winds are gusting through some of the areas and we're seeing forward progress on the fires as they continue to move off towards the south and east. this is a network of fire detection sites and the yellow ones indicate where fire has already burned. the red ones indicate the sensors and where we have active fires right now. some of the more active fires are about three miles from south lake tahoe. look at that marker there. that's the airport that you drive by as you're going up highway 50 into the city. unfortunately we are seeing these fires getting very close as we are seeing low humidity this morning, lighter winds now but we are
