reporter: [inaudible] ms. maroney: go ahead, yeah. ms. raisman: ok. so, i think that in regards to the question about safe sport, i think it's really important for it to be a completely separate entity, and safe sport should not be funded by an organization that there are reports against. and there needs to be more clear -- what's the right word? what i was trying to say earlier was that with safe sport in some of my personal experience, and also with my mom's personal experience, and with -- sorry, it has been a very long day. and with other people that i have spoken to, is that they bounce it around to other people, and so there needs to be more clear lines of communication. ms. maroney: and who is >> [inaudible] >> i also think that whatever can be done to have all three u.s. ag and fbi be investigated and -- says there has been investigations, but the scope of the investigation was not acceptable and it needs to be completely independent, it needs to go back decades, nothing is off-limits. until we know the answers to that, we don't know who to ho

ms. biles, ms. maroney, ms. nicn nic nichols, ms. raisman, thank you for your testimony today. it will make a difference in the lives of many people witnessing it. you all were gold medalists today in the cause of justice. thank you for joining us. you're excused. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> hello, everybody. i'm john king in washington. if you've been with us, you've been listening to draw matic testimony on capitol hill today. emotional and infuriating details from four star u.s. gymnasts. they say the fbi gravely, grossly mishandled its investigation into the former usa gymnastics team doctor larry nassar, who abused them and hundreds, hundreds of other girls. following this emotional testimony today and the investigations and with me are gen jeanne. you had these great american athletes, global icons, if you will, talking in heartbreaking personal detail about the trauma and what they believe not only the betrayal not just by the u.s. olympic committee, but by the fbi. >> the betrayal by so many. they were brutally, brutally honest, emotionally vulnerable as they so amoa

they did not formally document the interview of ms. maroney. they did not formally open investigation of the matter. following that interview, the indianapolis office and local federal prosecutors concluded there was no venue in indianapolis for the federal investigation. those offices had serious questions as to whether there was federal criminal jurisdiction. yet the indianapolis field office did not advise state or local authorities and did not take any actions to mitigate the risks to gymnasts that nassar was continuing to train. further, that office failed to transfer the case to the fbi office that might have had venue despite informing usa gymnastics that it had done so. after eight months of fbi inactivity, in may 2016, usa gymnastics officials contacted the fbi's los angeles field office to report the same allegations. the los angeles office opened an investigation and undertook numerous steps, but critically, it did not contact state or local authorities, and it didn't take action to mitigate the ongoing threat represented by nassar.
