nbc bay area's thom jensen is joining us now. it is a popular spot where you are in the south shore, what are you seeing around you? >> reporter: a weekend like this would normally be packed with tourists instead of firefighters but as we came in here today, what we saw was an amazing fire fight. hundreds of firefighters who saved all of the cabins coming in at echo lake road and they even without a lower echo road here to protect historic and treasured cabin and doing it by the boat loads literally. just below a rocky summit. firefighters from as far away as texas and arizona pack in 4500 feet of fire hose to attack the flames above them. >> we are taking advantage of these great conditions to try to get this fire put out for good. >> reporter: along a smoky east shore, tahoe, one woman tells me she's breathing a sigh of relief because of the efforts of these firefighters. her home is safe and so are her friends' and family's home. >> reporter: with highway 50 closed, no one in the family have been able to check on the cabin tha

nbc bay area watched it all unfold. talk to us about what you saw and how this played out. >> good morning, marcus. we were just finishing up our last hit earlier this morning around a couple minutes to 7:00 when we saw traffic starting to slow. that is the same time chp says they began receiving calls that there were cars on the northbound lane of the golden gate bridge slowing down traffic about 15 minutes later the southbound lane was stopped because of that protest that was happening at the front of the golden gate bridge on the san francisco side. now, several pro immigration groups frustrated with the status quo drove to the bridge and stopped there with hopes the move would gain the attention of lawmakers. a spokesperson for one of the groups behind the protest called human agenda says he apologizes for the backup but the event may have caused but says the group is dmaning democrats override the senate parliamentarian who excluded immigration provisions like a pathway to legalization for millions from that $3.5 t

live in south lake tahoe, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. >> thom, thank you. you can see thom there in smoky south lake tahoe. rob, every seems bittersweet. the smoke now here in the bay area. what's happening? >> we're seeing a combination of smoke problems ongoing. i'm glad thom jensen is wearing his n95 mask. those smoke levels around south lake tahoe are off the charts. as the firefighters pointed out, a lot less fire activity around lake tahoe. the active areas are these little red dots. there weren't a lot of those in the last 24 hours. most of those actually burning away from south lake tahoe. let's take a look at that smoke pollution level, which around south lake tahoe level was an aqi index of 700. to give you an idea, spare the air is down there, and this is where tahoe has been for the last two weeks. and more of this is going to be ongoing over the tahoe basin next couple of days, kind of in and out of that wildfire smoke at times. back to the bay area, you're seeing some unhealthy air around marin county. moderate air quality elsewhere. we'll hav

nbc bay area's marianne favro joins us. it's amazing the pilot walked away from this crash. >> reporter: it really is unbelievable. take a look at this. the pilot managed to avoid the water and land the plane on its belly on this marshy area. it's pretty miraculous the pilot's okay, given one wing of the plane was broken off when he clipped a power line. the faa says the twin-engine beechcraft baron crashed just before 2:00 this afternoon. the pilot was the only one on board. firefighters say he walked out on his own and was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution. we talked with a pilot who frequently flies his single engine plane out of palo alto airport. he says given the tough landing he believes the pilot was experienced. >> i've heard of incidents around this airport that didn't turn out okay for everybody involved. so i think it is very lucky that he did make it. >> reporter: palo alto fire says a hazmat crew was called out because some fuel was leaking in the marshland. now a private environmental company is work

nbc bay area's bob fradel is live. the police chief just delivered the update on the investigation, so what is he saying? >> reporter: good morning, marcus. fremont's acting police chief tells us this officer shooting and killing of a man accused of attempted murder is still under investigation. but he believes how his officer responded was justified and clear cut. within the past hour or so, fremont police released this video from the dash cam of officer jesse hartman. officer hartman, who has been with the department for nine years, was responding to the scene of the attempted murder when he saw a man matching the suspect's description passing the parkway, interception with south lake. this was the evening of wednesday, august 29th. the dash cam's microphone malfunctioned so there is no audio, but you can see the police lights come on as the officer comes over. the suspect reaches for his white t-shirt. a handgun falls out. the suspect appears to point shotgun at the officer. then the suspect reaches down for the han
