a fire weather watch for a large portion of northern california. we have a chance of seeing lightning later on today. a closer look at home, the fire weather watch against at 5:00 p.m. today and it comes as much as -- as much of the north bay has a chance for lightning. we are in an exceptional drought across the region. the highest drought category, everything is extremely dry. the chance of having lightning now forecast does mean the possibility of new fire. he is why we are tracking that threat. you see the moisture of the southern california coast? that will move into northern california and try to bring us a threat of lightning. let's look at when we expect the highest threat. by 10:00, there is a low threat in parts of the bay area. i think it is early tomorrow morning. 1:00 a.m. on our friday that we will likely see the chance of some lightning. it is not guaranteed. what if we do, there could be new fires started because everything is so dry. it is cooler today. there is some good news there. 72 in oakland. 65 in san francisco. san jose go

what i'm watching for the weekend, a chance of some showers moving in to far northern california. that would be amazing. but this line just kind of falls apart as it moves into the bay area. at least some rain close by. this wouldn't be unheard of to get some rain in the middle to end of september, but this time of the year, we start to head out of our extremely dry month into some of our wetter months. it would be nice to see that, but it doesn't look like we'll get a lot out of that but we'll have a cool down and our temperatures from the low to mid 90s to the mid 70s this weekend. that is going to be amazing and it's going to help clear out our air quality just a bit. looking at san francisco, low clouds and we may have drizzle for saturday as the temperatures only reach the low 60s. that's a cool down from the 70s we're starting with this week. mike, heading out the door how is it looking for the commute? >> very calm. time to give you a cool down. i like that. no major problems or additional issues for the debris, but i marked that into san francisco. 580 a crash around 150.

we have so many fires burning and just in northern california there are ten active fires. you can see all the hot spots that we have up around redding and some of that smoke will be moving into ukiah as well as northern sonoma county. as we watch our air quality improve our temperatures are dropping. for the south bay the low 80s today, for san jose, and for morgan hill reaching 86 degrees. many of these temperatures five degrees cooler than yesterday and hayward reaching 77, also 77 in palo alto, san mateo reaching 73. downtown san francisco, 66 today. and santa rosa reaching 76. still pretty warm in ukiah. that's where it's going to be smoky today. a lot of changes ahead. we're looking at a storm system that will be approaching the pacific northwest by the weekend. this could bring in some rain. some of the models are holding it together with a chance of showers. mainly some very light rain, but this is really going to be beneficial across part of northern california dealing with the fire. around ukiah, that could help with fire containment and also bring us some cooler

ryan: wildfires continue to devastate northern california. hundreds of structures have already burned, leaving many without a home. >> after losing everything i worked for and everything from all these years, it is gone. everybody says it is so irreplaceable. no. a lot of it is not. ryan: to local organizations and to donate thousands to support those affected by the wildfires. a director of community investment for the women's foundation in california says they gave over $200,000 last year to local agencies battling fires. she says they plan to do the same this year. >> we are hoping to make similar investments this year if not more so both providing direct relief but also providing support organizations that are doing this long-term structural solutions. ryan: most of their money goes to local shelters and programs to help those who lost their homes in the fire. >> our primary goal is to get the money out the door to communities that are closest. those that have direct access to communities that are impacted. ryan: they're not the only nonp

northern california is seeing a lot of lightning. this is the last line working through solano county to affect the bay area. much of the day will be dry. the future weather, 7:00 it is out of here. later on this afternoon it is nothing but sunshine. look at the temperatures in about seven minutes. kumasi: this is what firefighters have been dreading. our lake tahoe camera capture lightning strikes around 10:00 last night and they were happening a few minutes apart. this shows them edited together. this lightning is threatening the area, also where the caldor fire is burning. firefighters have been preparing for days. there is concern over the possibility of dry lightning sparking new fires. so far calfire has not given any updates on how the lightning might be impacting the fire. the caldor fire is 53% contained. >> check out the lightning. this was in yolo county about 50 miles west of sacramento. there were several lightning strikes one after the other. lightning lit up the sky across the bay area in northern california. drew has

got a lot of rain this i mean this area here all the way down into northern california. they got legit rain like couple inches of rain, which is enough. to really doesn't. i don't know if it puts the fire season away. what it helps a bunch and it certainly puts smoke down and gets containment on those fires. dixie fire got a big help from, um, from this particular when antelope fire got some big help as well from the rain 14 degrees warmer napa. that's the trend. it's warming up their sinking. fog is not going to form but we are going to see temperatures warming is that air sinks the offshore flow keeps the fog away and we find temperatures tomorrow that looked like these and they're going to be. nineties low nineties mid nineties super nice day, even at the coach, you're going to see seventies, most likely, so it's going to be pretty good that way to 89 in vallejo. these are the forecast highs for tomorrow. yeah yeah, that looks good. 97 fairfield, and then it cools off after that. it's amazing to me all these years in the bay area. how. when it decides to become fall,

we had the rain over northern california. mainly, showers for us. the totals, superimpressive here across those fire zones. a quarter to 1 inch for the bay area, we topped out at 1400ths of an inch. so let me take you in closer here on the doppler radar and you will see some spotty showers over the dixie fire burn zone. that is beginning to break up. and i know you would like to see this in september. some snow. yes. snow over mt. shasta we had enough cold air. there, you can see it right there on the loop. not a whole lot but a little something here. definitely, good again for those fire burn zones. now, as we move through tomorrow morning, this system is gone. so we are going to start off with just a little bit of cloud cover, though. just some lingering clouds. but any kind of rain chances. those have moved on out. and then, for the afternoon, look at this. sunshine returns and the way the pattern's setting up, it is going to push any kind of smoke off towards the east so we are also looking at great-air quality and that sunshine. the thing i wan

now, if the measures do go through, they'd be the first districts in northern california to have some sort of vaccine mandate for their school district. now, in west contra costa, board members are holding a special meeting next tuesday that would mandate students 12 and older will fully vaccinated by october 31st. those who don't make the deadline would have to switch to remote learning. in oakland unified school district, they'll vote on a similar age requirement next wednesday. health leaders are preparing to vaccinate kids in marin county as young as 5 up to age 11. the fda is anticipating approval for a pfizer vaccine for kids ages 5 to 11 in the next month. marin county has a goal of giving the first dose of the optional vaccine to at least 75% of children in the county when it becomes available. with more schools and communities switching their focus to vaccinating some of those younger children, l.a. unified school district really making national headlines. they've already enacted their vaccine mandate for the covid vaccine. students that do not show that proof of vaccination

it's a sign of the times throughout northern california, and it's certainly true for mill valley. the question is, what should residents do it for fire threatened this community of hillside homes with two way streets, some as narrow as 10 ft across so that as soon as someone stops or tries to go the other way, it's a traffic jam. these streets were. built around the turn of the century, when we still had horses and buggies or small cars, and since that time we've remodeled homes to be much larger. our latest theory right now is that we have two main roads in town. and both of those will be jammed up. that is where the mill valley mayor and other city officials are conducting experiments saturday, mill valley is teamed up with google researchers to organise an evacuation drill aimed at improving the evacuation response here. the drill will involve some 250 residents lining up on east blacktail avenue to create gridlock. then time how long it takes to clear the area by directing cars to nearby parking areas away from any fire zones. the theory is that by clearing the flatland area q
