a university of texas poll of texas residents says something like a third, less than a third of texas residents wanted texas' abortion laws to become more strict. doesn't matter though. they've done it anyway. and the u.s. supreme court's continued silence on this law in texas, you know, is unnerving for texans right now but unnerving for everybody. americans have been bracing for the trump conservative supreme court to take up and perfect presumably overturn roe versus wade. the but what we were expecting is a big case, right? a big national debate? we thought it would be that mississippi case they agreed to hear this fall most likely. that would at least mean oral arguments and reporters gather outside the court and a ruling and dissent and explanation. instead, they just said nothing and let texas have their way. as if constitutional rights here are just not implicated. is this really how it ends? texas effectively outlaws abortion and the supreme court just says nothing? let's it stand? joining us now is amy miller, the founder and south korea of whole women's health and has clini

half a dozen states are moving to copy texas's law and ban abortion in those states as well, but texas as of now is the only state who have banned abortion, so women in texas who need an abortion have to leave the state somehow in order to get one. we've been watching that sort of delicate and somewhat panicked maneuvering by texas women and people who support them to try to get around the structures of this new law, this reality where it's illegal to get an abortion now. in the midst of that today, though, watching all those developments was a bit of a bull from the blue to get today's news from across texas' other state line. from across texas' border to the south. because today the supreme court of mexico ruled that it is unconstitutional to ban abortion any longer in that country. some states in mexico allow for legal abortion, some do not, but the supreme court ruling today in mexico struck down one state's abortion ban, and the ruling is expected to be binding on all states in the country. in other words, mexico just got its roe v. wade today, just a few days after the republican

what texas has devised is a bizarre, dystopian, vigilante system for hunting women in texas who seek abortions. a vigilante system to effectively ban abortion and shut down all abortion providers in the state, not to mention terrorizing women who are seeking the procedure. but they're using not the direct power of the state, but instead anti-abortion activists as their vigilantes and the state court system as their means of doing it. it is weird. it is deliberately weird. and as our friend dahlia lithwick explains at slate.com today, it is a quote, convoluted system that texas republicans devised on purpose specifically to prevent federal courts from blocking this law. and so far, dahlia writes, these they've succeeded. this friday a court canceled a hearing on the constitutionality of this new law in texas. the cancellation of that hearing would effectively allow the law to take effect tonight at midnight, september 1st. this aggressive intervention by the fifth circuit court of appeals, quote, forced abortion providers to do what almost seems unthinkable. they were forced to ask th

abbott: in texas because of the early voting and voting on election day, it ensures that texas provides even more opportunities for people to engage in the voting process and the president of delaware as well as many other states across the entire country. the law does make it harder for fraudulent votes to be cast. one area that makes it harder to keep, concerns mail-in ballots. mail-in ballots, this is an area where both republicans and democrats every -- agree has been the easiest way to cheat in the election process. the law i am about to sign fixes that problem. another issue that this law addresses is ballot harvesting. it makes ballot harvesting a third-degree felony. [applause] ballot harvesting is a serious problem in the state of texas. that comes from a federal district judge who was appointed to serve in texas by president barack obama. that federal district judge heard a case, a trial, and during that trial, there was an abundance of evidence presented, an abundance of law presented and after all of the evidence was presented, the judge wrote an opinion deciding that case.

it is a very scary time for women in texas. >> and it's not just texas. i want to put up the list of states also considering these laws. every republican governor wants a piece of this, mississippi, north dakota, south dakota, indiana, arkansas. mr. mayor, there have been calls to respond to this with a boycott. there's been talk, boycott texas was trending over the weekend. the austin american statesman reports that portland, oregon, could start boycotting texas very soon over this abortion ban. south by southwest could actually start to face boycotts. texas feels very 1980s south african in so many ways, including voting. is it time that it be treated the way that apartheid and south africa was treated with boycotts? what do you think of that as mayor of austin? >> as mayor of a city right now, we need help and support. we'd much rather people focus on bringing resources to organizations in our state that are fighting this, helping the cities and the communities put up a defense to this. that's really the help that we need. the urban areas in our city h

i love texas. i am not here to bash texas. the fact is we have a lot of work to do that we have not been doing. we have the highest number and rate of uninsured in the entire nation. we have refused to expand medicaid coverage. half of the births in texas are to medicaid moms. we are not investing in those things we need to invest in to support women and their families. senator booker: thank you very much. rep. howard: thank you. senator booker: professor vladeck, i did not go to a law school. i went to yale law school. can you clarify something for me, because i fully concur that some of my friends on the other side of the aisle are probably better lawyers than me. but my friend, my dear friend, someone i value quite a bit, senator lee said the supreme court did not have jurisdiction because there was no proper defendant. i'll take my -- i'll take my question with my mic off. i know my time has expired. can you please answer that? prof. vladeck: i suffer from the same of which law school i went to. there are mischaracterizes

in four of texas' biggest counties. a couple of questions. one, isn't it just a terrible waste of taxpayer money to have an audit in a state that everybody says went fine and that president trump won by 600,000 votes, and are you contributing to this undermining confidence in our election process? >> governor abbott: i got to make several points about this. one, the context here. there are audits of every aspect of government. we have a state auditor, there's a federal auditor for the way the government operations work. businesses that are public companies are subject to an annual audit. why do we audit everything in this world, but people raised their hands and concerned when we audit elections, which is fundamental to our democracy? second point, and that is these audits that the state of texas is doing, they actually began months ago because the secretary of state of texas has an obligation to make sure that we do conduct audits in texas and they have to be done and away before any evidence about it would be a limite

out of texas. there's a money exemption built into this. i want to read a passage from new york times reporting on this. it says, quoting a doctor in texas, that's now dealing with this. it says if this was a criminal ban, we would know with this is in what we can and cannot do. dr. rubio said. but this ban has civil implications. it requires a lawyer to go to court. it requires lawyers fees. and then $10,000 if we don't. when what happens if everybody is sued, not just me? the doctor added, my staff is nervous. they've been asking, what about our families? delia, it seems to me, that's the design of the law. terrify everyone working in that clinic, including the receptionist, about what their attorneys fees will be. in how that will wipe out their families. >> i think that's exactly right lawrence. the design of the law is to shutter clinics. it's to use words like aid and abet, and abortion without any description of where aiding and abetting means. it really does tag the uber driver, the counsel

texas at a walmart, along a road, at a church, and what is the gop of texas's response to that? make it easier to openly carry a gun without training or a license. texas has more uninsured women and children without health care choice than any other state in the union by far, that lack of health care choice. what is the response to that? roll over roe v. wade and take away one of the final health care choices a woman has in this. so when you look at all of the panoply of this across the bore, you would think this is a joke, this can't be true. as the representatives say it is not 10% of the state they're concerned about, it is 5% of the state they're concerned about. i have said this before on your show, but texas is a perfect example. they don't care about the common good, as you can see on voting, as you can see on choice, as you can see on health care, as you can see on covid. they don't care about the common good. they care about me and my 5% that i'm worried about in the republican primary. ultimately, the only way that stops is if they begin losing elections in the general
