the high point of the 1970 when in fact many of these farms do sign contracts with the united farm workers and there are millions of supporters across the country. it really is seen as one of the most successful boycotts in 20th century history. however, the story is not all so romantic. 1970 is the high point. that means things go off afterwards. as much as i would like to say this is a story and things really improve a lot, in fact things quickly go back to the same types of long hours, difficult working conditions and without labor recognition in the years that follow. in many ways the united farm workers with a much more successful social movement and much less successful as a union. if you're interested, i have many books i can suggest to you. there are fights between the ufw and the teamsters. there are fights within the ufw itself. they're able to represent fewer and fewer farm workers over the '70s, '80s around '90s. in addition, chavez himself has an interesting longer history as well. he himself is very critical of undocumented workers because he sees them competing with the mexi

that is when i started the united farmworkers. i started the united farm workers union. we organize from 1962 through 1965. then we had a huge strike. >> they they get a 300 mile pilgrimage northward. >> that went on for five years. the strike started in 1955 and did not end until 1970. we could not win the strike because they kept arresting more people. we started a national boycott of california table grapes. when the employers saw they could not sell their grapes, they decided that they would assign contracts with the union. what you learn and teach is that people have power. you do not have to be rich, you do not to speak english, you do not need to be a citizen, but you do have power and you can make changes. one of the biggest moves we had for farmworkers was that there were toilets in the field. crops go into the box and the supermarket. the way that those fruits and big vegetables -- and vegetables go to the supermarket. it is horrifying to think that farmers did not have called drinking water or soap and hand washing facilities. all of that food is going directl

we begin in bakersfield, california and hear from dolores huerta, leader of the united farm workers union. dolores: i was born in new mexico and moved to california when i was six years old. my parents divorced, my mother brought me in my two brothers to california. we had a lot of discrimination in high school against kids of color. not only kids of color but the poor kids in 1942, when we went into the war, they brought in many people from mexico to fulfill the farm labor. what happened is after the war ended they kept bringing in more people. the domestic workers wages dropped to $.56 an hour and they would bring in the others and not pay the local workers. i formed an organization called the agricultural workers association as part of the afocio. i left the organization because it did not feel like they were doing the organizing that was going to be successful. that is when i started the united farmworkers. i moved to delano and reorganized from 1962 through 1965. in 1965 we had a huge strike. >> strikers from delano begin at 300 miles northward. dolores that went on for five : years.
