now he is challenging governor greg abbott. the thing is abbott already oversees a state that is lagging the national average rate. 60% of the population is fully vaccinated. a state experienced after awful bout of delta. yesterday the unvaccinated allen west was in the hospital with a serious case of covid getting treatment and tweeting, "as governor of texas, i will vehemently crush anyone forcing vaccine mandates in the lone star state. there are far better protocols that individual citizens can utilize and decide for themselves. now this is for greg abbott a political problem. what is greg abbott fully vaccinated republican governor to do? how can he possibly one up the challenger with a serious case of covid tweeting from his hospital bed against vaccine mandates? well, abbott issued an executive order banning all entities in texas from the vaccines. a step he did not take in the past. but now he's got a more pro covid-19 challenger to his right so i has to move towards the more pro covid-19 poll politics. west understood

outfront tonight, abbott's amnesia. the texas governor tonight forgetting he once championed businesses. forgetting that he was once against a, quote/unquote, nanny state. forgetting he is a republican. a party that, of course, claims to be pro-business. tonight, instead, he is facing off with some of the nation's top companies telling them that they can't run the business the way they want to. that he, the governor, is going to tell them that they cannot have a vaccine mandate. not because he doesn't think the vaccine is effective. this is all about politics. and major companies, like dell, american airlines, southwest, all of which are based in the lone star state, are defying abbott tonight. abbott, the same governor who once said this. >> texas prides itself on low regulations. people and businesses don't need the state telling them how to operate. >> we cut the cost of doing business by cutting regulations. >> we spurred our economy by cutting taxes and by cutting regulations. >> they all need the government to tel

governor desantis, governor abbott have doubled down on their base. their base is telling them that mandates on vaccines, mandates on mask, public health measures that have been recommended by the experts are in fact unpopular with the republicans. they're working to appeal to. they have greater support, they're working against the larger public opinion, which annually supports mandates. not by huge members. i saw a poll by the associated press, and lower than 48% -- only about a third oppose it. it's not overwhelming, but it is a majority. and it is significant. it's a difference between a pro and con. what we're seeing in desantis, abbess, and these other republicans, they're playing to the republican base. which is overwhelmingly against it. that's a calculation that they're making, it's good politics at this point. even if they don't win, when it comes down to sometime a court showdown with the biden administration. >> we should admit to ferc and viewers, who are used to seeing three initial guess on this hour, that we do indeed have three. it's j

this is not our first rodeo with governor abbott. he issued mask mandates, opening up in the state of texas. local governments were pro prohibited from doing the same. what we've seen is the governor is not going to respect the people, he's not going to respect the law, which is very limited in when he can issue executive orders. one thing he's going to have to respect is the will of the courts. i'm calling on texas business owners to file these lawsuits because that's exactly what we did in local government when the governor previously issued these bans on various measures to stop the spread of covid. we filed lawsuits, school districts filed lawsuits, cities across the state filed lawsuits. i think it's time for businesses to get into the game as well. >> are you planning on bringing legal action on this ban on vaccine mandates? >> the good news is our pending lawsuit against the governor in the attorney general right now already addresses the overreaching question which is, does the governor have the legal authority under texas' d

remember governor abbott tried to do this weeks ago with schools. he said that schools cannot mandate vaccines for covid. but this is upping the ante because the president's executive order mandating the vaccine for both federal workers, federal contractors and also for businesses that have over 100 employees comes into play here and is now in direct contravention of that federal law. i think you should look for the justice department to intervene here and say, wait a minute, when federal law is in conflict with state law, typically federal law trumps. so we'll see how this plays out in court. he's already been sued, the governor has already been sued about what he tried to do with this in schools. we'll see where this one goes. as you mentioned, irerica, ther is a lot of businesses headquartered in texas now, essentially in limbo. american and southwest, also oracle, at&t, dell, we're talking about major corporations here essentially now with what to do with exactly how to comply with this order and also comply with president biden's executive orde

what is wrong with what abbott said, isn't fairness? what we're striving for, especially in a place like academia. you know, it's funny, there's a song most deaf from way back in the ninety's when you start keeping paste, it starts with an up tempo and i find it interesting that all of a sudden people have an issue with diversity inclusion. when you start seeing more minorities getting degrees and you start seeing the playing field start to be level back in the days when front mit and some of these other schools have 9095 percent plus a white population. nobody talked about the issues diverted in inclusion. it only becomes a problem when other people are starting to catch up and think mister abbott is a great geophysicist. he does. rick dingle climate change, but maybe his opinions on social engineering don't company off in foreign place. we look at the enrollment numbers of minorities and some of these, i believe, institutions they're higher than have ever been there. a graduation rates are higher than they've ever been. there been no

not to be outdone, in florida, governor ron desantis is following abbott's lead on covid, asking the legislature to block the blight biden administration's vaccine mandates. still with us, don calloway, mark mckinnon, mike this is so on brand i don't know how immersed you are in the minutiae of texas politics these days. but what should we know, what should be to think about this new guy i bet is put up as secretary of state, and if we weren't in polite conversation we'd probably ask, is he a student who would fold with one phone call from abbott's boss? >> well sure he would, he's one of the lawyers who made the texas appeal on behalf of donald trump. so, he's bought and paid for by donald trump already. so this is fascinating to watch, the back and forth between abbott and desantis to see you can kiss the shoots faster in china better, this is an interesting thing on the texas front, on the elections front, because admin is responding to the pressure to audit the state of texas, which trump won by a lot, which is abbott offered to audit the four largest democratic counties, so i th

what are they saying about governor abbott saying they cannot impose vaccine mandates on employees? >> well, those two companies that have been so hard hit by the pandemic over the course of the last year and a half, they are saying that they are going to follow the federal vaccine mandate put in place by president biden so they will continue that. and this has really put businesses across the state in quite the bind as they're trying to figure out what they can and can't do. but it's also important to point out as governor greg abbott is facing primary challenges next spring, facing two different opponents that are basically coming at him from the supreme right wing of the texas republican party, that the governor has issued other mandates in reference to masks in schools. there were a number of organizations and entities that simply ignored the executive orders and have been in legal fights over it. so there's a real question as to whether even many of these texas businesses will comply or take this to court. we'll see how this plays out in the coming days. >> what other reactions

i wanted to talk about abbott's ban on vaccine mandates. as we talked about the other extreme policy texas is now pushing, it feels like banning vaccine mandates should fit in that group. how are businesses in texas handling that? >> well, first of all thank you very much for having me on tonight. governor abbott loves to say texas is open for business. but the ban on vaccine mandates is about as anti-business as it gets. it strips away choice from businesses who are trying to make tough decisions about keeping employees, customers most safe during this pandemic. because of other executive orders the governor has issued tying local officials hands. what we have seen is throughout the state, you have seen chambers of customers, business groups, seen large institutional businesses like southwest airlines or american airlines, come out and say we're follow what the federal government told us to do. we're employers with more than 100 employees are to mandate the vaccine. i think this was exactly what the governor wanted put the businesses in to
