he was last night in scranton, pennsylvania trying to sell this deal but of course the specifics still aren't there. it is hard to sell something when you don't know the full picture of what it is going to look like or how it is going to be paid for. that is kind of the struggle for them because for example one thing the president has touted time and time again was that he wanted to have two years of free community college included in this plan. we now know he has told progressive democrats earlier this week during a meeting in the oval office that is likely not going to make the final cut. so yesterday even he was doing this kind of dance where he is saying i want the child tax credit but not mentioning specifics because of course we now know it may only be extended for one year. and so that is the struggle for the white house. they are hoping to focus just on the larger picture and telling voters tonight what is in here, how they can benefit from what they do know is going to be in here like universal pre-k. billions for climate change. all of those factors and the expansion for medi

the white house has announced a trip to scranton, pennsylvania. of course, scranton a significant place for the president. not just sort of a tack-on trip. there's a lot of meaning that hometown. last week he was in connecticut at a child care facility. the week before that he was in michigan trying to promote the message to labor groups and a real pro labor message with the build back better plan. a lot of the same thing and we're seeing the same meetings with the same people. you mentioned the representative that was just hear. our reporting indicates the white house has been in a back and forth with senator manchin. of course ygs that's been going on since the first days of the presidency. so it is really i think to some extent more of the same, more meetings, more public messaging. white house officials will say that's what you have to do to get the deals done, and that is what the president is doing. certainly i will say one new thing. last week was the white house signaling it is time to wind down the talks and to get a deal soon. and so if

and that's why the president tonight is heading to scranton, pennsylvania, his hometown, which really, they are saying is a symbolic choice venue and backdrop to continue to sell this. but it's a tricky line he needs to walk, because he can't necessarily pitch all of these things that might end up in the final text. and the other huge challenge here for the white house is trying to see if they can get this done before the president leaves for europe a week from tomorrow. that is a very, very tight time frame, but we're told that officials here and on the go that that is something the president expressed desire for trying to accomplish. maybe it won't be signed, sealed, and deliver, but at least the agreement, framework, the price tag, all of those details that are still outstanding might have a handshake agreement before the president leaves for rome and of course to glasgow, that critical climate summit. that's another thing we're still watching for. we don't know how much money will be directed to that all-important issue. the president already conceding that he is going to have to
