polls in virginia show as of now, it is a tight race. as a matter of odds and history and statistics, the democrats really have their work cut out for them in this race. over the course of my lifetime, and i'm old. i was born in 1973. i know, right? over the course of my entire life, every time a new president has been elected to the white house, the other party wins the virginia governor's race the following year. virginia holds its governors races in off years, in odd years, and so there's always a governor's race after a presidential election. the year after. and it happens every single time that whoever the new president is who just won the presidency, the other party then wins in virginia, every single time. when i was 3, jimmy carter won the presidency in 1976, a democrat, obviously, then in 1977, a republican wins for virginia governor. then in 1980, it was ronald reagan who won the presidency, obviously a republican, and so in 1981 it was a democrat who won the virginia governor the following year. it happens every time. when geo

you know virginia. it almost always votes against the president's party the year after the presidential election. so joe biden, a democrat, just won. i think virginia would want it to swing back, but there's something really noteworthy as an old guy who's done this all my life. it used to be, especially in the south, democrats ran away from their national leaders. i can't tell you how many clients i had, i'm not a dukakis democrat. you have mcauliffe welcoming him and you see the campaign trying to smoke out trump. they want trump to -- i don't think trump has the guts. every bully is a coward inside and he had had the guts to come into virginia and not campaign. there's just no way. >> and kirsten, how much of a bellwether is this? we say this time and again. we've said this so many times that if mcauliffe loses in virginia, this means bad things for democrats in 2022. that's not necessarily the case. we don't know where things are going to be a year from now, but it sure feels like this is huge. this

the other trend, though, in virginia is this. it's a modern curse of politics in virginia. the party that controls the presidency that's what you're seeing here going all the way back to 1977, the party that's controlled the white house almost always has lost the virginia governor's race. you could see it right here going back to 1977, jimmy carter, a democrat was the president. republicans won the governorship. that trend is sort of the opposition party winning in virginia, we see it over and over again with one exception, actually in 2013, barack obama the democrat was the president and actually a democrat, terry mccauliffe, remember he won nar low. ken cuccinelli was his opponent. he barely won. obviously republicans glen yuncan trying to present a more moderate image remember what happened in to 2013. joe biden himself hovers over this race. this is how we look at the virginia race as you mentioned kind of a prelude to the mid-terms. biden right now just under 43% his approval rating nationally, and in virginia which again he carried by 10 points last year over donald t
